The function announced to commission the newly constructed second line between Kayamkulam and Haripad at Haripad railway station near here on Thursday became an occasion for the people’s representatives to list their set of demands for railway development of the area and the district.
The demands became vociferous due to the presence of Union Minister of State for Railways K.H. Muniyappa at the function. Union Minister of State for Power, K.C. Venugopal, who presided over the function, requested for a new train from Alappuzha to Bangalore in this year’s Railway budget.
Ramesh Chennithala, MLA demanded a new stop for Kochuveli-Bangalore city and Thirunelveli-Happa trains at Haripad railway station. The KPCC president also demanded a stop for Kayamkulam-Ernakulam passenger at Cheppad.
He also suggested that the marshy land near the Station lying idle could be filled up and used for parking purposes. Another demand was a new rest room for passengers at the Haripad station. A new reservation counter at the station was also put forward by Mr. Chennithala.
The Union Minister in his speech said that new reservation counter could be sanctioned only if there were 120 applicants for reservation per day at the Haripad station, while currently it was only half the stipulated applicants. He asked the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), Thiruvananthapuram to sent proposals for stops for trains. He also promised to instruct the DRM to start a new restroom for the Haripad station in three months.
Earlier, G. Sudhakaran, MLA requested for strengthening of security measures in trains. State Minister in charge of Railways, Aryadan Mohammed and others spoke.
The newly constructed second line of 13 kms between Kayamkulam and Haripad comes after a wait of eight long years. The doubling work was completed with computer based electronic interlocking with a cost of Rs 67 crore.
The newly launched doubling work on Haripad-Ambalapuzha stretch has an anticipated cost of Rs 125.25 crore. With the completion of this doubling work, it will pave way for faster travel.
