double decker trains soon on lucknow to delhi

Metro to generate more benefits than cost

Chandigarh , August 27, 2012
Within 10 years of its commissioning in 2018, the Chandigarh Metro is expected to generate economic benefits more than estimated cost of first phase of project worth Rs. 10,900 crore.
As per the detailed project report (DPR), the Metro will lead to huge savings on various components,

including fuel spent on personal vehicles, vehicle operating cost (VOC), their environmental impact, vehicles' accident cost, maintenance cost of traffic infrastructure and cost of time spent by residents in driving their personal vehicles.

As per the figures available in the project report, the time cost saved by Metro passengers is Rs. 6,423 crore in nine years. With the implementation of the project, the consumption of petrol and diesel will also get reduced. The passengers are expected to save Rs. 1,054 crore on fuel and Rs. 1,282 on vehicle - bus, two-wheeler, car and three-wheeler - operating cost (VOC).

The Metro will also help save Rs. 39.74 crore as accident cost of personal vehicles and Rs. 164 crore as traffic infrastructure maintenance cost. Besides, in the first nine years, the Metro will help save Rs. 117 crore on environmental impact of lakhs of personal vehicles, which would eventually be phased out by the Metro.

In the first phase, a 37.57km Metro network will be constructed at a cost of Rs. 10,900 crore. The first phase will be operational by 2018 and will provide benefits of over Rs. 11,000 crore by the year 2028.

These components have been quantified by linking it with the number of passengers shifting from road/rail mode of transportation to Metro. The total benefits have been calculated by subtracting the economic cost of the project - incurred for construction and maintenance - from the benefits of the project each year. The net benefit value, which would be negative during the initial years, becomes positive as years pass.

The cost of Metro construction is derived after considering the cost of all major components, such as relocation and rehabilitation (RR), civil construction for underground and elevated stations, depot track laying, signaling and telecommunication.

AC stations

While all the underground stations will be air-conditioned, the air inside the tunnel will be from these stations that are pushed by the metro trains. What is called the “piston effect”, the air in the tunnel will be pushed by the moving train from the station since the distance between stations is not more than a kilometre. Only during emergency situation such as smoke or fire that additional air will be pushed in for which provisions will be made.

Steps Taken to Prevent Misuse of Tatkal Tickets - INDIAN RAILWAY

With a view to reduce the scope for misuse, Tatkal tickets are issued on production of self attested photocopy of one of the prescribed proof of identity and the same in original is required to be carried during the journey, to verify the bonafide of passengers. However, during peak rush periods when the demand outstrips the availability, some cases of black marketing of reserved tickets by touts come to notice at the time of surprise inspections and preventive checks conducted at reservation offices.

During the period from April 2012 to June 2012, a large number of checks were conducted during which 930 unauthorized agents/touts were apprehended/prosecuted.

During the current financial year (upto June 2012), Indian Railways Catering & Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has permanently deactivated 14 subagents for involvement in irregularities. Moreover, with a view to keep a check on the activities of agents booking Tatkal tickets, following additional steps have been taken:

1. The timing of opening of reservation of Tatkal tickets has been changed to 1000 hours on the previous day of journey instead of 0800 hours as per earlier provision.

2. Access to Tatkal bookings has been denied to agents both through internet as well as across the computerized Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters between 1000 hours & 1200 hours.

Transaction Failures in E-Ticket Booking

During the period from April 2011 to March 2012, while 11.62 crore tickets were booked successfully through the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) website, in 96.12 lakh cases payment was settled but tickets were not booked.

In May 2012 and June 2012, in 13.19 lakh and 11.41 lakh cases respectively payment were settled but tickets were not booked. The reasons for such incomplete transaction included non availability of lower berths, entry of wrong password, network failure etc.

In addition to regular monitoring of the system, the following measures have been taken to improve the functioning of the IRCTC website:

 Capacity of the servers has been upgraded to meet the demand.

 Internet Bandwidth has been increased from 350 Mbps to 450 Mbps.

 IRCTC is continuously coordinating with various banks regarding payment gateway to reduce failed cases. This has resulted in improvement in success rate of transactions.

Students and unemployed youth, arguably, hardly ever consider themselves friends of the police.
However, the State law enforcement’s future public interface, digital touch- screens to be placed in 42 locations, will help them learn university exam results, Public Service Commission notifications, and employment opportunities in the public sector at a tap on the monitor.
Whether the touch screens will help improve the Police Department’s relationship with the youth is anybody’s guess. But Inspector General of Police, Internal Security, S. Ananthakrishnan says that the touch-screen kiosks host an array of features which will prove beneficial to the public and possibly help the police substantially improve its public service delivery mechanism.
Integrated system
Importantly, the police will integrate their Information Communication Technology-enabled citizens help desks, to come up soon in all police stations and facilities, with the kiosks.
The help desk will assign petitioners and complainants a unique reference number. To learn about the status of their petitions, they need to merely input the reference number into the touch-screen computer.
The interface can also be configured to provide tourist information, bus, rail and airline timings and receive complaints and suggestions from the public.
The public, if they chose to while away their time at bus stands or railway stations, can view the photographs of wanted criminals, read the details of the gruesome crimes they have been accused or merely update themselves on the latest crime statistics. They can know how to get police clearance to organise a demonstration, use a public address system or purchase a gun. The computers also provide all police helpline numbers and that of law enforcers, including that of the State Police Chief.
“Except for music, the kiosks have all conceivable elements that will help the department reach out better to the public,” quips a police official.

Delhi Metro station washrooms located in obscure, inaccessible corners

Has nature ever come calling to you during a Metro ride?

If yes, then you may have de-boarded at some intermediary station to relieve yourself and, much to your chagrin, realised that there's not a washroom in sight.

Until, that is, the friendly attendant pointed you towards an obscure alcove-ish space, beyond the turnstile, which lead you to one.

You may be a regular Metro commuter but are unlikely to be aware that all the 137 stations on the network have toilets

Ahmedabad: The Indian Railways have decided to increase the salary of gangmen working in the country who will now be called ‘track maintainer’ instead of gangmen.
The same has been revised in the grade of Rs 1,900, Rs 2,400 and Rs 2,800.
The gangman were earlier working in grade of 1800. J G Mahurkar, General Secretary of the Western Railway Mazdoor Sangh said that the railways were forced to increase the grades for the gangmen following the agitation launched by the National Federation of Indian Railway and Western Railway Mazdoor Sangh (WRMS).
Mahurkar said that the railways also changed the designation of the gangmen. They will now be called track maintainer.
He said that because the railways have decreased the quota of promotion, they have decided to launch a project in Mumbai, Baroda, Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Bhavnagar and Ratlam division.
The WRMS demanded that all the recommendations of the Joint Committee of Railway Board should be accepted.
