IRCTC website continues to choke

The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation website continues to be under pressure, much to the chagrin of passengers who could not book tickets online for about 10 minutes on Wednesday morning.

The website flunked, following a network glitch attributed to the continued festival rush for about a week. Adding to the pressure is the demand for tickets from those wanting to celebrate Chhat Puja back home.

The IRCTC website choked a number of times in the run-up to Deepavali with people desperately trying to book tickets to go home.

On Wednesday, the website collapsed soon after Tatkal ticket booking commenced at 10 a.m. but was restored after 10 minutes. However, only about 53,000 tickets were booked as against the normal figure of 60,000 during the two-hour period for Tatkal from10 a.m. and 12 noon.

There were more than 12 lakh hits during this period, while the system is capable of handling just about 10 lakh connections, officials maintained.

IRCTC hopes to improve the system within three months and increase its running capacity to 30 lakh-40 lakh hits.

Festive rush slows Railways ticket site

Heavy demand for booking online tickets during the festival season has slowed down the railway ticketing website, causing delay and much inconvenience to passengers.

The ticketing site (IRCTC.CO.IN) could not open for about 10 minutes in the morning today due to some network problem, said a senior IRCTC official.

Normally, about 60,000 tickets are booked during the 10 am and 12 am, the peak hour for Tatkal ticket booking, everyday. "However, about 53,000 tickets were booked today during this hour due to the problem," the official said.

Ticketing agents are barred from booking tickets during 10 am to 12 am.

The official said "the site has the capacity to take the load of 10 lakh hits at a time but the concurrent hits increased to more than 12 lakh this time, causing the slowdown."

The site had also developed problem last week before Diwali.

"We are taking three steps to prevent slowdown of the site during the rush hour," said the official adding "first we are upgrading the software, secondly adding new servers and then efforts are also being made to increase the concurrent connection capacity, so that the site can take the load of upto 30 lakh hits at any given time."

There are about three lakh tickets booked online in a day.

He said the changes in the software is expected to be completed in the next three months.

It has also been decided to expand the list of prescribed proofs of identity for undertaking journey on Tatkal ticket and other reserved classes which will be as follows:

Under the new policy, from 1st December, 2012, any one of the passengers booked on a PNR for undertaking journey inany reserved class has to produce any one of the above mentioned prescribed proofs of identity in original during the journey, failing which all the passengers booked on that ticket will be treated as travelling without ticket and charged accordingly.

At present, passengers travelling on a reserved ticket, issued through Passenger Reservation System for undertaking journey in any air conditioned (AC) class have to carry any one of the prescribed photo identity card with them during their journey.

The above change in the policy is aimed at facilitating the travel of bonafide and genuine passengers and simultaneously to check the scope for travel on transferred tickets. It is also considered that the proposed change shall also be useful from the security point of view.
