Will metro rail systems transform mass transit in urban India?

Will metro rail systems transform mass transit in urban India?Somewhere the equation is wrong because the moment we start talking about urban transportation, the conversation veers towards metros.

While looking at urban transportation, you must consider cycling tracks, bus services, bus rapid transport system (BRTS), and light rails, much like you find in European cities; and then there are regional rapid transportation systems (RRTS).

A metro is just one solution that is related to the size of the city’s population. There is a popular perception that towns with less than a five lakh population don’t merit a metro. Then there are other factors, such as population density, the ability to pay, and finally the intensity of commuter traffic. All these have to be taken into account for a metro rail to be viable in a city.

Of India’s 5,400 towns and cities, about 100 require a 21st century urban transportation system. To my mind, a city like Chandigarh is ideal for, more than a BRTS, an electric trolley bus. And then, of course, a big city requires an RRTS because the pattern is linked to the model of urbanisation.

Western Railway’s 1st power-saving train to run today

Western Railway (WR) will run its first pure Alternating Current (AC) train on Christmas day.
Expected to save electricity, the train, which was manufactured by Integral Coach Factory in Chennai, has one major difference from the earlier trains. Unlike suburban trains in which the electric motors are in the second, fifth, eighth and eleventh coaches, this new AC train will have these motors in the first, fifth, eighth and twelfth coaches.
From Tuesday, WR authorities will be trying to find out how commuters — especially women — take to this change.
This change in the location of the electric motors, however, means that the first coach, which is a women’s compartment will get divided into two because of the motor being placed in between.
Moreover, this would also mean that two constables will be needed to guard the ladies compartment as against the one constable usually posted.
“We want women to give us feedback in large numbers so that we can decided on whether to continue with this set up [of the women’s compartment being divided into two] or shift the women’s compartment to the second coach,” said Mahesh Kumar, general manager of the WR.
The number that they can send the feedback to is 9004477777.
WR officials said the overall composition of the train increases the seating capacity to 1,242 from the present 1,174 in a 12 car rake. The total seating capacity of 24 hour second class women’s compartments has been increased to 170 from existing 159.
A WR statement said as a considerable number of high-tension power equipment has been shifted to the train’s lower frame, it has created more space inside compartments.

Central Railway's reservation centres prepared to handle summer bookings

MUMBAI: In order to cater to huge rush in demand for tickets for long distance trains during summer holidays, Central Railway has decided to regulate the queue post-midnight outside all Passenger Reservation System (PRS) in its jurisdiction.
Since the railways have opened the booking for long distance trains four months in advance, the rush for tickets for the month of April 2013 will pick up in the last week of December.

A senior railway official said, "To prevent chaos we have decided to allow queue formation outside PRS office at 12:00 mid-night."

At CSTM and Thane reservation centres, queue will be formed inside the PRS office in front of the token counter and tokens will be issued at 07:50 am onwards. Reservation will start exactly at 08:00 am.

He further said, "There will be a single line for normal as well as tatkal tickets .However tatkal tickets will be issued only after 10:00am as per turn in the queue."

CR said that passengers other than in queue will not be allowed to enter the PRS office till all passengers in queue have entered.

The official said, "There will substantial presence of Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel at PRS centres to ensure law and order. They have been asked keep a vigil on persons who may enter the PRS at the behest of touts to corner the tickets."
