Redevelopment of Railway Stations

Add caption
Railways have identified 50 stations for redevelopment by utilizing the commercial potential of land around and air space above the stations. Details regarding the commercial potential of the available land for such redevelopment can only be known after the Master Plans are finalized based on detailed feasibility studies.

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation is implementing a scheme ‘Rajiv Awas Yojana’ (RAY) for rehabilitation of slum dwellers, on whole city ‘slum free approach’ basis. The scheme covers slums on Central Government as well as State Government lands. In phase-I, the coverage of RAY shall be in 250 cities during 12th Five Year Plan. Railways will also participate for the Slum Dwellers in its lands wherever State Governments come up with such rehabilitation under RAY Scheme.

Railway Minister takes nation for a ride: Pawan Bansal's five schemes were already announced by his predecessors

Union Railway Minister Pawan Bansal, who launched the railways on an austerity drive to fight a severe funds crunch, could have been facing a bankruptcy of ideas in his organisation while presenting his budget.

A chunk of the proposals read out by Bansal in Parliament on February 26 were appropriated from earlier rail budget speeches. Some of them go back to the tenures of Lalu Prasad Yadav and Mamata Banerjee and were clipped off the Budget documents presented by them.

Finance Minister P. Chidambaram had explained as "clumsily worded" the proposal on tax residency certificates in the Budget that had alarmed foreign investors and spooked the stock market. As you will see, Bansal and his aides cannot take such an escape route - because no fewer than five old ideas aimed at wooing the aam aadmi were purloined from earlier documents and sold as new. Take for instance the proposal on extending time for availing of online ticketing from 12.30 am to 11.30 pm.

It was announced back in June 2010. An order to this effect was issued soon after. The commercial circular dated June 2, 2010 was issued by then executive director (passenger marketing) A. Madhu Kumar Reddy requesting the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) chief to "help facilitate ticket seekers to use online facility between 12.30 am and 11.30 pm daily". It asked to reduce the shutdown period to just one hour as compared to the prevailing six hours (11.30 pm to 05.30 am) and "not deny the passengers the services of extended facility".

No check on facts

The facility was touted as a passenger friendly step when Mamata was railway minister and had touched a chord with passengers countrywide. Someone had clearly missed it all at the ministry and it fetched up among Bansal's proposals.
