Indian Railways: IRCTC books record 5.02 lakh e-tickets in one day

NEW DELHI - Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) booked more than five lakh rail e-tickets yesterday, surpassing the earlier one-day sales record set in July last year.

The Corporation booked 5.02 lakh e-tickets, crossing the earlier figure of 4.96 lakh e-tickets booked on July 7 last year, an IRCTC official said.

The record, he said, comes at a time when the IRCTC is facing criticism of its Web site failing to cope up with the peak hour rush for Tatkal bookings and during the festive season.

IRCTC had recently invested Rs 3.5 crore on enhancing the efficiency of the Web site and another Rs 3 crore in augmenting the software licenses and storage area network.

The system is now being upgraded with more powerful Hexa Core servers (with 64GB RAM) from the earlier Dual Core servers (with 8GB RAM), which costs nearly Rs 4 crore, the official said.

“With the above investment/upgradation, we hope to achieve a 40-45 per cent increase in bookings during the Tatkal hours,” he said.

At present, the e-ticketing site books around 48 per cent of the total reserved tickets on the Indian Railways network.

Railway Minister Pawan Bansal, in his Budget speech, had announced revamping the IRCTC site by increasing the booking rate to 7,200 tickets per minute from its present around 2,000 tickets.

He had declared that the site, expected to be ready by the year-end, would be able to handle 1.2 lakh users at any point of time as compared to its existing capacity of 40,000 users.

IRCTC has already started working on this augmentation, in which they are investing crores of rupees to install future generation hardware and software.

Manning of Unmanned Railway Level Crossings

It has emerged from the analysis of pattern of accidents that manning of unmanned level crossing is not an ideal solution.  Therefore, the policy of manning of unmanned level crossings has been reviewed.  Accordingly, Indian Railways have decided to progressively eliminate all unmanned level crossings by:
(i)                Closure – Closing unmanned level crossings having NIL/negligible Train Vehicle Unit (TVU).
(ii)             Merger- Merger of unmanned level crossing gate to nearby manned or unmanned gates or subway or Road Under Bridge (RUB) or Road Over Bridge (ROB) by construction of diversion road.
(iii)         Provision of Subways/RUBs
(iv)            Manning -  The unmanned level crossings which cannot be eliminated by above means, will be progressively manned based on rail-road traffic volume, visibility conditions for which the criteria is as under:
Category – I: All unmanned level crossings gates with Train Vehicle Unit (TVU) above 3000.
Category –II: All unmanned level crossings gates with visibility restricted to 800 meters for road users and TVU above 2500.
Category –III: All unmanned level crossings, which do not fall in Category –I & II above.

Arrangements for Drinking Water in Trains and at Platforms

Maintenance/improvement of amenities including toilets at stations and platforms is a continuous process. Arrangements for drinking water have been made at all the stations on Indian Railways. Water is suitably treated as per requirement to make it fit for drinking purpose. Corrective action is taken whenever shortfall/problem is noticed during inspections or reported through public complaints.

In addition, only Rail Neer and other BIS (Bureau of Indian Standard) approved packaged drinking water having requisite laid down standards as shortlisted by Zonal Railways, are permitted for sale in the trains. Frequent checks are being conducted to ensure approved brands, quality and hygiene. Discrepancies found by the Railways are dealt with suitably under FSSA (Food Safety and Standard Authority of India) Act.
