58th Railway Week Award Function of Railway Board Celebrated

Chairman, Railway Board Shri Vinay Mittal said that it is a matter of proud for all railway men when Indian Railways entered the select one billion tonne club by achieving a loading of about 1010 million tonne during fiscal 2012-13, which was hitherto the preserve of only three countries. Addressing a gathering at the 58th Railway Week Award function organised by Railway Board, here today, Shri Mittal said that in a scenario where the core sector remained sluggish, this is no mean achievement as the incremental loading itself stood at 40 million tonne.
Shri Vinay Mittal said that Public Private Participation received a focused attention with a slew of freight incentive schemes getting introduced or getting modified for being more customer-friendly. A new policy with five participative models for incentivizing private investment in last-mile-rail connectivity projects was rolled out for connecting ports, mines and industrial hub. Similarly, a renewed thrust was given to the comfort of passengers by introducing special schemes in catering and cleanliness, modifying the Tatkal scheme to prevent misuse and by promoting internet ticketing which now covers 48% of the total reserved tickets. A total number of 980 stations have been identified as Adarsh Stations, out of which 711 have already been completed. Among the green initiatives, focused attention was given in consultation with DRDO to introduce bio-toilets in selected trains which prevent pollution caused due to direct discharge toilet system, he added.

Shri Mittal said that with a view to provide a safer system, several initiatives in technological upgradations have been taken viz. provision of Train Protection Warning System (TPWS), Vigilance Control Devices (VCDs), Wheel Impact Load Detectors (WILD), Mobile Train Radio Communication (MRTC), Train Collision Avoidance System (TCAS), etc.

Congratulating the award winners, Shri Mittal said that any award function cannot accommodate everyone and the fact that our performance was encouraging during the last year clearly indicates that the same would not have been possible without synergizing the various individual efforts that provide the required momentum for moving ahead.

Shri Vinay Mittal gave away the running Efficiency Shield, Merit Certificates and Cash Awards for maintaining high standard of efficiency, prompt disposal of cases and punctuality to two branches jointly viz. Vigilance-I, and Record Branch; and four branches were given Merit Certificates and Cash Awards. A total of 139 officers and staff of Railway Board were given Merit Certificates and Cash Awards for rendering outstanding service during the year 2012-13. In addition, 80 outstanding Sports persons and 12 artists of Railway Board who excelled in the Inter-Ministry and All India Civil Services Competition were also felicitated with cash awards/appreciation letters on this occasion.

Railways returns to Facebook with passenger, train info

NEW DELHI: Now, you can log on to Facebook to get real-time information on arrival and departure of trains, platform numbers and daily availability of seats.

The Delhi division of Northern Railway has resumed its disabled Facebook page after Hindustan Times in February published a report, “Flooded with complaints, railways logs off FB.”

Passengers can get information regarding three railway stations in the Capital — Old Delhi, Hazrat Nizamuddin and New Delhi.

Divisional railway manager (Delhi) Anurag Sachan said, “Use of technology would provide information conveniently and save time. Passengers should make maximum use of this facility.”

“You must have a Facebook account. Type Delhi Division Northern Railway in the search box and click “About”. You will see two addresses. The first link () will give information on arrival/ departure of trains and platform numbers,” he said.

“The second link () will have information on availability of seats/berths in all classes after the final charts have been prepared,” Sachan said.

First launched about two years ago on March 8, 2011, for passenger feedback and to ensure better facilities, the Facebook page had gradually become a one-way traffic. Faced with a barrage of complaints, the authorities stopped responding on the page.

A set of railway officials was supposed to update the page on an hourly basis. People uploaded pictures, shared links and posts. But the railway authorities cited “technical reasons” and “disabled” the page to avoid “negative publicity.”

“The daily footfall of passengers at railway stations in Delhi alone is 10 lakh. A lot of people these days use social media. It was a vital source of feedback. But we needed competent people for real-time redress. We couldn’t cope with the outpour,” admitted a railway official.
