Lalu Prasad hires 13 trains for his Patna rally

Indian Railways got a boost to its business, thanks to former railway minister Lalu Prasad, whose party Rashtriya Janata Dal, has hired 13 special trains to ferry workers and supporters to Patna for his Parivartan in Patna on May 15.

Over the past week, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief and his top party leaders have been busy mobilising supporters to reach Patna for the rally by the special trains.

"Please, come with sattu, litti-chikha, chura and gur, (all edible things) to the Parivartan (change) Rally in Patna. We will arrange free drinking water for all of you," Lalu Prasad has been appealing, in chaste Hindi, and sometimes in Bhojpuri and other local dialects.

According to RJD leaders, the party's MPs and legislators have booked 13 special trains from various parts of Bihar and Jharkhand to ferry supporters to the rally. Eight special trains were booked in the East Central Railway and five in Eastern Railway.

"RJD is paying Indian Railways for booking the special trains," RJD senior leader Ram Kirpal Yadav, considered close to Lalu Yadav, said. "The railways will earn a hefty amount for running the trains. It is not free of cost."

CP Joshi takes additional charge of Railway Ministry

New Delhi: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways CP Joshi on Monday took additional charge of the Railway Ministry.

"Will improve the trust deficit prevalent among the staff, will carry out all responsibilities with honesty," Joshi told media after taking charge.

In a swift and decisive move, the Congress Party dropped both Ashwani Kumar and Pawan Kumar Bansal from the Union Cabinet in view of the charges of corruption and impropriety surrounding them. The decision in this regard came soon after Congress president Sonia Gandhi met Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh last week, and it was decided that both the ministers should be asked to put in their papers to contain any further damage to the UPA Government.

The government was finding to difficult to defend the Law Minister after the Supreme Court's scathing remarks over changing the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) status report in the coal scam.

Meanwhile, Bansal's ouster from the Cabinet became inevitable after it became clear that the CBI was all set to question him following the arrest of his nephew Vijay Singla in the cash-for-job scam.

The arrest of Singla and media revelations about his family's business transactions and bank loans had caused the government major embarrassment.

Itarsi-Betul railway route set to complete 100 years

Nagpur: The Itarsi-Betul section in the Nagpur division of Central Railway will be completing 100 years on Monday.

The 108-km rail route, a vital link connecting the north with the south via Nagpur, was opened on May 13, 1913.

Laying the rail route crisscrossing the entire Satpuda Valley was a major challenge back then. But engineers of erstwhile Great Indian Peninsula Railways (now Central Railway) achieved it by constructing nine tunnels and over 300 bridges in the valley, Central Railway Public Relations Officer Praveen Patil said.

In those days, the trains had steam engines and took three hours to cover the 108 km distance. The modern diesel and electric locomotives now take 1 hour and 45 minutes to cover the same stretch.

Diesel locomotives were introduced in the section in 1970, and electric locomotives followed suit 21 years later (1991).

Grand Trunk Express (New Delhi to Chennai) and Dakshin Express (H Nizamuddin to Hyderabad) are the oldest trains running on this route.

The centenary would be celebrated at a function at Betul station tomorrow.

The Federation of Railway Officers' Association in its letter to Cabinet Secretary and PMO said that senior posts of General Manager are kept vacant for months while in cases of vacancies of members in Railway Board, proposals to the Appointments Committee of Cabinet (ACC) are sent at the eleventh hour.

"A Chairman of Railway Board actually kept a member's post vacant for the entire duration of his chairmanship and held dual charge," said the letter.

Besides, it charged that there was a complete lack of transparency in formation of the panels for promotion as GMs and others.

"Needless to say, that this is not only a great blow to the personal dignity and feeling of self-worth of these officers but also creates a sense of fear and uncertainty in their minds -- a breeding ground for favouritism and corruption."

The Association said that the events that unfolded in connection with the arrest of Mahesh Kumar in the bribery case did not surprise most Railway officers.

"They (events) have deeper roots than what the media can see or the CBI can uncover," the Association said.

Seeking "immediate corrective measures" to weed out corruption from Railways, the Association demanded that all proposals for filling up vacancies of GMs and members of Railway Board must be sent three months ahead of the vacancy actually occurring.

A uniform rule should be laid down and followed without deviation for appointment of Chairman or members of Railway Board, the Association said.

Full-speed trials of Reach-3 from June 10

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has said that full-speed trials from Peenya to Srirampura station (on Reach-3) will be conducted from June 10 and the same will subsequently be extended to Sampige Road station by July 8.

“Even if this is complete, the oscillation trials are a must and for that we need the clearances under the schedule of dimensions,” a source said.

Underground stretch

The second tunnel-boring machine (TBM) – Kaveri – in the North-South underground corridor achieved a breakthrough at 9.35 am on Saturday at the south-end of the City Market underground station.

“The tunneling work had started from the South Ramp near KIMS Hospital and the 393-metre length of the tunnel has been completed in about six months,” the BMRCL said in a press release.

Noting that the breakthrough was accurate, an official said the TBM was an earth pressure balance (EPB) machine with a ‘mixed shield’, tailor-made in Germany. “It was assembled in and imported from China,” the release said.

In a separate press release, BMRCL said that the speed of Indian Railways trains between the Bangalore City railway station and Malleswaram station has been restored from 20 kmph to 45 kmph in the first stage, in view of the substantial completion of construction of the 66-metre railway span Metro structure at Malleswaram. The speed had been reduced to 20 kmph due to Metro work.
