Common underground duct mooted along three Metro Rail corridors

Dangling and criss-crossing electrical and telephone cables is not only an eyesore on the city roads but can also hamper laying of the metro rail lines | EPS
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, in coordination with the Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited, L&T Metro Rail (Hyderabad) Limited and other stakeholders, proposes to have a common utility duct for the major utilities along the three corridors of metro rail.

The metro rail will have three corridors running to a total length of 72 km. Corridor-1: Miyapur to LB Nagar (29 km), Corridor-2: Jubilee Bus Stand to Falaknuma (15 km) and Corridor-3: Nagole to Shilparamam (28 km).

According to municipal commissioner MT Krishna Babu, the common duct will eliminate the need for digging roads for laying pipelines and underground cables on the three corridors. The GHMC has submitted proposals to the HMRL in this regard.

Due to lack of coordination among the government departments and private companies, digging of roads is taking place in the city. ‘’we want to avoid this hassle at least on the three metro rail corridors where works are underway’’ he said.

When contacted, HMRL managing sirector NVS Reddy said that they received the proposals from the GHMC. ‘’It is too early to say anything on the matter since the proposals are only in the conceptual stage and we have to discuss it with various stakeholders such as Andhra Pradesh Central Power Distribution Company Ltd (APCPDCL), Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL),’’ he said.

If HMR is ready to lay a common underground duct for all the utilities, the GHMC is willing to bear the cost. A GHMC official said that there were many advantages in having a common duct such as maximising the usage of underground space, reducing the costs of maintenance of utilities, minimising above-ground constructions which may disrupt traffic and creating an area for easy access to repairs. Furthermore, protection of the utilities during natural disasters will be easier if they are all placed together in a single duct.

Dangling and criss-crossing electrical and telephone cables is not only an eyesore on the city roads but can also hamper laying of the metro rail lines, the official added.

Women, too, will pilot VAG Metro

PRIYANKA BALID, 24, always wanted to make a career out of her love for trains. So when she learnt that Mumbai Metro One Pvt Ltd was looking to recruit motormen, or Metro pilots, she promptly decided to apply.

"I love the sound of trains and the excitement of being near them. Also, train driving has been a domain of men. I wanted to be different," said Balid, a mechanical engineering graduate.

Unlike the suburban railway system, in which women in charge of the rake may be a rarity, it is likely to be a routine sight on the city's first Metro corridor. MMOPL, a Reliance Infrastructure-led consortium, is training around 40 Metro pilots, a fair share of which is women.

MMOPL, however, did not provide the number of men and women in training, saying the total could change depending on how many of them successfully complete the training.

"The training is challenging. Almost every aspect is stringent and demanding. It is not a mundane job and a great avenue for me to inspire young people like me," said 25-year-old Srikala Nair, who hails from Ulhasnagar.

The training — a mix of theory and experience on simulator —is being conducted by experienced Metro drivers who have received advanced driver training in India, South Korea and China. It also focuses management of crises, such as malfunctions or passenger emergencies.

Over 6,000 people applied to be Metro pilots for Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro, which will be commissioned partially from Versova to the Airport road station by September and fully by year-end. A graduate degree in science with maths and physics as mandatory subjects was the minimum qualification that aspirants had to meet.

The Research Design and Standards Organisation of Indian Railways conducted the hiring process, involving medical, IQ, memory, observation, personality and aptitude tests. After the stringent procedure, two rounds of interviews and a physical test to identify reaction time, MMOPL chose 40 candidates — most of them in their early or mid 20s. To operate the entire line, which will be commissioned in the second phase, MMOPL will need at least 50 pilots.

These pilots will be put on the job only after they receive a certificate of competency on successful completion of training.

Joshi takes charge as Rlys minister, 25 top posts lie vacant

New Railways Minister C P Joshi, who took charge Monday, has a difficult task at hand. Even as the Railways' appointment process is under the CBI scanner following the arrest of Member (Staff), Railway Board, Mahesh Kumar, around 25 high-level appointments are awaiting clearance.

Apart from Member (Traffic) and Member (Staff), Joshi will also have to appoint three general managers for Central, Western and South East Central Railways. The posts of Additional Member (Traffic) and Additional Member (Information Technology) at the Railway Board are also vacant.

Around 20 Divisional Railway Managers (ex-cadre posts) have to be appointed by the Railway Board — the list was being finalised in the last two months. Sources said under the current circumstances, the process may start afresh.

The crucial post of Member (Traffic), a cadre post of the Indian Railways Traffic Service, is vacant despite two general managers, Devi Prasad Pande of South Central Railways and Sunil Varan Arya of West Central Railways, being available as the senior-most eligible officers for the post. Pande is tipped to take over since he has two years of service left, but his appointment is yet to be processed. At present, Railway Board Chairman Vinay Mittal holds additional charge as Member (Traffic).

In the case of the DRMs, the Railway Board is not in a hurry as the officers are not set to retire soon. However, the delay is affecting the career progression of senior officers.

Joshi said he would carry out his task with honesty and transparency. "I will try to improve the trust deficit prevailing among the staff. I will carry out all my responsibilities honestly and in a transparent manner."

Joshi earlier held Railways portfolio for a month in September as additional charge, before the Congress gave it to Pawan Kumar Bansal.

GCDA plans to enhance connectivity to new bridge

Traffic congestion acute at key junctions; DMRC to install two dozen boards to guide motorists from arterial and side roads to the bridge

Though the Kochi Corporation is yet to chalk out plans to widen approach roads to the newly opened Salim Rajan (now named A.L. Jacob) overbridge, the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) is fine-tuning plans to augment connectivity on either side of the bridge.

A day after the bridge was opened, traffic congestion was acute at the junction where Rajaji Road meets Chittoor Road and at Abad Plaza Junction where it meets MG Road. Policemen had a tough time managing traffic as the two junctions are narrow and perennially bottlenecked. With more vehicles expected to use the new bridge in the coming days, the situation will turn grave.

A week ago, the GCDA agreed to surrender seven metres of land on the side of Ambedkar Stadium, to widen the a 200-metre stretch from the new bridge up to Rajaji Road.

“The DMRC has agreed to widen the road. On our part, we will widen Mahakavi Bharatiar Road that runs parallel to Rajaji Road, so that smaller vehicles can gain access to Chittoor Road without entering Rajaji Road,” said N.Venugopal, GCDA Chairman.

The GCDA also plans to construct a 7-metre-wide road that would run parallel to Rajaji Road. “On the bridge’s eastern side, we will construct a minor bridge having 12-metre width over the canal, linking Gandhinagar with South Railway Station’s eastern entry. This will enhance connectivity to the new bridge as well. Plans are also afoot to widen Kumaranasan Square on Katrikadavu bridge’s southern side,” he said.

The Ernakulam District Residents’ Associations’ Apex Council (EDRAAC) has demanded speedy measures by the GCDA and Kochi Corporation to ensure better connectivity to the bridge. Its president P. Rangadasa Prabhu demanded that the corporation widen the junction where Rajaji Road intersects Chittoor Road and later MG Road.

“The influx of vehicles through the new bridge and the expected opening of a new mall near Hotel Abad Plaza will further choke the two junctions.”

Mr Prabhu said that the corporation that was proactive in renaming the bridge after A.L. Jacob must show the same level of enthusiasm in widening the two junctions. Sources in the traffic police said that the junctions can be widened by removing encroachers and through minimal land acquisition.
PARKING WOES

Despite traffic police announcing that parking would be restricted, haphazard parking of vehicles is a problem on the new bridge’s approach roads. It is more acute on Salim Rajan Road, while vehicles parked near U-turns on the Kaloor-Kadavanthra Road cause traffic hold ups at these places.

The Assistant Commissioner of City Traffic Police K.S. Baby Vinod said that the DMRC had promised to install two dozen boards to guide motorists from arterial and side roads to the bridge.

Palakkad-Erode train commences service

Member of Parliament P.R. Natarajan (second left) along with members of the Coimbatore Railway Struggle Committee flags off the inaugural run of MEMU train between Palakkad Town and Erode at the Coimbatore Junction on Sunday. Photo: M. PeriasamyGiven rousing welcome at Coimbatore Junction

The much expected Palakkad-Coimbatore-Erode Mainline Electrical Multiple Units (MEMU) began its service on Sunday.
Members of the Coimbatore Railway Struggle Committee led by P. R. Natarajan, MP, convener G.K. Nagaraj, member, Residents Awareness Association of Coimbatore R. Raveendran, Station Consultative Committee member P. Balasubramaniam, Nagaraj of Janata Party and others welcomed the train at the Coimbatore Junction which commenced its service from Palakkad town station. The members then boarded the train and travelled till Peelamedu.
Mr. Raveendran said that the train, with nine coaches and a carrying capacity of 900 passengers, would provide the much-needed connectivity to all the cities and towns on the Palakkad - Erode stretch.
Gauge conversion
Ever since the Railway Ministry announced the introduction of the train in the 2012-13 Railway Budget, the Committee had been urging the Ministry to introduce the train at the earliest.
Now the Committee would urge the Ministry to complete the Coimbatore-Pollachi gauge conversion work and the electrification of the Mettupalayam line so that another MEMU could be made possible in the region.
If that were to materialise, it would provide complete connectivity to all the towns in the region.
The MEMU service starts at Erode at 7.45 a.m., reaches Tirupur at 8.40 a.m., Coimbatore at 10.25 a.m. and reaches Palakkad at 12.30 p.m. In the opposite direction, the train starts at Palakkad at 2.30 p.m., reaches Coimbatore at 4.10 p.m. and Erode at 7 p.m.
