Now rail passengers can book meals through internet

Now book your pizza or pasta through Internet before boarding a train and food will be delivered at your seat during the journey.

Much to the delight of train passengers, the Railway Ministry has decided to launch a pilot project of booking meals through Internet in selected trains on Delhi-Jammu and Delhi-Amritsar route.

"We are trying to provide a variety of meals to passengers during train journey and for this we will soon be having an arrangement with some popular food chains," said a senior Railway Ministry official involved with the project.

As per the proposal, a passenger will be offered to book his meal by giving his name, coach and berth number of the train on an Internet booking site and the food will be delivered at his seat at a particular station.

"There will be choices like biryani, pizza, pasta, burger and sandwiches among others which are otherwise not available in pantry cars of trains. Some reputed food outlets will be roped in to cater to the demands of passengers," said the official, adding "payment will be made after delivery of food."

However, the official clarified that the service is not meant for Rajdhanis, Durontos and Shatabdis because the fares include the food served in these trains.

A meeting was held at Rail Bhawan last week with officials of CRIS and IRCTC to explore the possibility of booking meals through Internet. It was decided at the meeting that a pilot project for booking meals through Internet would be launched on a few selected trains on Delhi-Jammu and Delhi-Amritsar routes to begin with, said the official.

The official further said that a decision will be taken shortly whether to create a new site or to provide a separate link on the existing ticket booking site of the IRCTC for it. A supplier agency will also be selected for providing delivery service on trains through a bidding process. Currently about 10 lakh passengers avail catering facility daily at stations and trains, while 302 Mail and Express trains have pantry cars.

South Campus to get linked by Delhi Metro in Phase III

Commuting to Delhi University's South Campus will be much easier for thousands of students as Delhi Metro has decided to construct a station at Dhaula Kuan especially for them.

"By the academic session of 2016, South Campus will have direct connectivity with Metro and it is estimated that 12,000 people will be travelling through this line daily," a DMRC spokesperson said.

The 59-km long Mukundpur-Shiv Vihar metro line will have an elevated station at Dhaula Kuan, adjacent to Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College of South Campus, the spokesperson said.

"The station will have entry/exit points near the foot over-bridge on the route. It will also help in easing traffic there," he said.

Apart from South Campus headquarters, seven other colleges are located near Dhaula Kuan, and every year thousands of students take up undergraduate and postgraduate courses here.

Delhi Metro in its 140-km Phase III project is aiming at connecting North Campus to South Campus. Commuters would have to change trains at Azadpur and INA stations to reach their destination.

By 2021, as per estimates, 15,000 commuters will be using this metro line daily.

World-class features to add to Jaipur Metro's charm

Jaipur: The Jaipur Metro trains would have some power-packed, world-class features to make people’s journey a sheer pleasure.

The steel tracks, on which these trains would run, have been designed by the Bharat Earth Movers Limited.

These standard gauge rail tracks will boost the Metro’s speed up to 85 km/h. The high speed would be supported by disc braking system, which would also ensure a jerk-free journey. Each capsule train will have four bogies comprising two driver trailer cars and two motor cars.

Each driver trailer car would be able to accommodate 315 persons whilst a motor car would carry 342 persons. Thus, the total capacity of the whole train would be 1,314 people per trip. The trains would halt at stations for 30 seconds with a round trip speed of 34km/h.

The trains would be equipped with better features to provide more comfort to the elderly and women. The trains would have comfortable seats for senior citizens and women.

The fully air-conditioned compartments would be high on security as well. The trains would be equipped with four closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras. An automatic feature called Passenger Information System (PIS) would update the passengers about the nearby stations both verbally and visibly. The maps of the train’s route would be displayed on screens fitted inside the bogies.

These maps would be highlighted by coloured lights. During any emergency, the passengers would be able to use the ‘passenger emergency alarm handle’ to talk directly to the train operator. Apart from this, the trains would have four emergency exits.

Railway food stored near loos puts people at risk

CHENNAI: Many passengers often think twice before buying food from vendors on a train. Some of them reject such items outright, ignoring their gnawing hunger or raging thirst. Why? Because several of them have seen vendors handling the food or beverages near toilets on the coaches.

Many who have consumed such food have complained about food poisoning or other problems.

With most sleeper coaches not having storage space, caterers stash food and beverages near the toilets before they selling them to passengers.

Plastic crates filled with packed meals and snacks are stashed near the doors or toilets or in the vestibule connecting coaches. Vendors pick up the crates and sell food and beverages to passengers on all coaches. This is a common sight on trains leaving Chennai Central or Egmore stations after 7pm.

Many vendors blame the lack of space to keep food items. "We are forced to keep them near the doors or toilets because that is where there is some space," said one who sells tea on Chennai-Thiruvananthapuram Mail.

Food loaded either at Central or at Katpadi is stashed near toilets before being sold to passengers. "Earlier, they used to collect orders and supply food when the train reached Katpadi after 9pm. But, they seem to have stopped this practice. Instead, caterers load food and sell it till the supply is exhausted," said A Kumar, a frequent traveller.

Southern Railway has hired private contractors to supply food on trains without pantry cars after the railways took over catering from Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation.

A senior railway officer in charge of commercial operations said they always insisted that food not be loaded on to trains. "According to the rule, the contractor should take order and then supply or sell food to passengers through windows. There is no designated storage space on coaches to keep food items. Following complaints, we have ensured food is not opened and handled near toilets or doors of coaches."

"New coaches attached to Shatabdi or Jan Shatabdi come with mini-pantry where food can be stored and reheated. This is incorporated in coaches designed for day trains. But coaches used for express trains do not have space for storing food because such trains are supposed to have pantry cars," he added. Southern Railway has only 84 pantry cars which are used for 55 trains.

Officials of health and commercial departments conduct periodic checks to ensure food is not contaminated. "Toilets are not used if food is stored nearby. Several inspections are being done to ensure that hygiene is maintained," said Southern Railway chief public relations officer V J Accamma.
