Internet-linked surveillance on Charbagh station soon

Senior railways officials will no longer be required to monitor the closed circuit television camera footage of Charbagh railway station premises from the control room.

To enhance security at the Charbagh railway station, the Government Railway Police (GRP) have now decided to install Internet Protocol Television ( IP TV) linked new CCTV cameras will allow officials to keep track of things on their android phones, tablets and laptops.

“The IPTV link will allow senior officers to track passenger movement on the station premises 24X7 on their computer and even on laptops or Android-enabled mobile phones,” senior superintendent of police (GRP) Manoj Kumar said.

“The IPTV footage can be accessed with a specific login identity and password that will be provided to senior officers, including the director general (railways), inspector general (railways) and senior superintendent of police (GRP) among others.

Senior officials will no longer require to sit in the control room to review the footages. They can track the footages on their android phones, tablets and laptops,” Kumar said.

He added that more CCTV cameras would be installed on the station premises, especially at the crowded places including platforms, circulating areas and overbridges.

It may be mentioned that under the project Drishti of the GRP as many as 12 cameras have been installed on the station premises, which include eight at Charbagh railway station and four at Lucknow Junction. The project was first launched in Moradabad division of the GRP.

The move to install cameras comes in the wake of the increasing criminal activities on station premises, Charbagh railway station inspector (GRP) GS Tripathi said.

Govt rejects doubling of Vasco-Londa rail line

PANAJI: The state government has rejected the proposal of the South Western Railway (SWR) to double the existing railway track from Londa in Karnataka to Vasco in Goa as the state does not want any additional direct or indirect financial burden.

Chief minister Manohar Parrikar raised the issue of investment on the required infrastructure for doubling of the track and said, "Double line will not be permitted in Goa, we don't need it. I cannot support what Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) wants."

He also said that Goa government does not support the project because it will not increase industrial activity.

"First they have to show me how industry activities will increase in the state by doubling the track," he said.

Parrikar said the plan is to benefit the company that has been allotted a berth at MPT for coal handling. "MPT does not function on industrial requirement but functions based on requirement they have created," he said.

Parrikar said, the state will have to acquire land and pay for construction of bridges near unmanned and manned crossings due to increased rail traffic.

"Railways demand money from state governments for construction of bridges near railway crossing," Parrikar said.

Times View

The negative approach of the state government for any progressive project will shatter the economy in the long run and this will be no different from the Congress government at the Centre. Decisions on important projects should not be taken on political thoughts, but on economic thoughts. It's naive of the government to say that there will be no gain to industry.

Konkan Railway to construct passenger shelters on platforms

MANGALORE: With a view to providing better amenities to passengers, the Konkan Railway is constructing 101 passenger shelters covering its platforms to provide respite to passengers from inclement weather.

Apart from this, the Corporation is also going to provide 175 benches at various station platforms on its route. The cost of providing these passenger amenities would be Rs 85 lakh.

The new passenger shelters are in addition to the existing quota shelters at platforms which had tiled roofs and are more cost-effective in that they cover more than double the area in same cost.

The passenger shelters are light weight and made of pre-coated GI corrugated sheet. Being modular, the coverage of the shelter over the entire length of the platform can easily be expanded with no modification to the existing shelter.

The passenger shelters of KR are also aesthetic and in line with the architecture of majority of KR stations which have been designed to suit the local culture, for example Udupi railway station architecture resembles a temple on the lines of the famous Shri Krishna temple.

Konkan Railway will be adding further 175 sitting pre-cast concrete benches with wooden finish paint at its various stations to the existing 861 benches. These benches have longer life.
