UNDERGROUND METRO CORRIDOR DEMANDED

Urban Development Ministry has asked the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation to examine if it can construct an underground metro corridor from Dwarka to Najafgarh instead of an elevated line as per the present plan. The Ministry has received representations from people in the Dwarka area that an elevated line would create much inconvenience as it would result in demolition of shops and buildings. —PTI

22 bullets found on train at Andheri yard

MUMBAI: A labourer cleaning a train compartment found an abandoned box containing 22 live rounds late on Thursday.

The rake was parked at the Andheri railway Vinay Kore, Kargil war widows, Vinay Kore's trustyard. The worker, Raju Kanaujia, later handed over the rounds to the Andheri government railway police(GRP).

"An abandoned box, containing 22 live rounds, was found beneath the seat of a local train while it was parked in a railway yard at Andheri late on Thursday. The rounds were discovered by a conservancy worker while he was cleaning the rake. The worker, Raju Kanaujia, later handed over the rounds to the Andheri Government Railway Police (GRP). There is a strong possibility that the rounds were being carried by security personnel. They could have been from the city police, the GRP, the State Reserve Police Force or a private agency. We are also making inquiries with the Thane police and Navi Mumbai police.

Nobody has turned up to claim the ammunition so far," said Shivaji Shinde, senior inspector of Andheri GRP. Officials believe that the bullets either fell out of their owner's luggage or were left behind accidentally he placed them beneath the seat for safekeeping and forgot about them. "The rounds are of 0.38 bore and can only be used in a revolver. They were placed in a box that was wrapped in a plastic sheet and kept in a khaki cover," said an official. "The train in which the ammunition was found made its last journey from Churchgate to Andheri station on Thursday. It reached Andheri at 7.39pm and was sent to the yard thereafter around 8.30 pm," he added. Kanaujia, who was sweeping the compartments between 11.30pm and 11.45pm, stumbled upon a case beneath the seat in a general compartment.

After checking the contents, Kanaujia immediately alerted his supervisor and they brought the ammunition to the Andheri GRP outpost. 'KH98' has been inscribed on them, the police said. The Andheri GRP has recorded an entry about the abandoned rounds and are looking for their owner.

A week ago, a GRP constable "dropped" his rifle from a running train between Nahur and Mulund stations while on escorting duty in the ladies compartment. A search party of 40 personnel was deputed to hunt for the rifle but it remains elusive till date.

Now, railway coaches to have stickers in Braille signs

NEW DELHI: Now, railway coaches will have Braille-embedded signage to facilitate visually-challenged passengers.

The first prototype coach — complete with Braille stickers — is expected to be rolled out of here in October for feedback from visually-impaired passengers.

The non-AC conventional coach manufactured at the Integrated Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai will have Braille stickers on berth, toilet, wash basin and doors as well. As per the plan, eventually more coaches will have Braille stickers.

The Braille stickers will be placed following consultation with members of blind association in the national capital.

Currently, coaches are provided with signage, instructions, seat numbers that are mostly in the form of vinyl stickers or metallic plates and have no Braille characters and cannot be read by visually-impaired passengers. Plans are afoot to use stickers with metallic base with printed characters embedded into it.

The Braille sticker for visually-challenged passengers was announced in the Rail Budget of 2013-14.
