Delhi to get its first mono rail by 2017

The national capital will get its first mono rail network by 2017, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said Tuesday.

"I hope in next two or three years or definitely by 2017 we will get the first mono rail in Delhi," Dikshit said at the inaugural session of a two-day seminar on Indo-Japan Monorail and Light Rail Transit (LRT).

"A study was conducted on the feasibility of mono rail in the national capital by the Delhi Metro. We have come to a conclusion that 11 km of mono rail will ply in east Delhi between Shastri Park and Trilokpuri," Dikshit said.

"This is a beginning. We need to identify many more corridors for the mono rail," she added.

The first monorail corridor from Shastri Park to Trilokpuri will have 12 stations.

According to the urban development ministry, mono rail can supplement the metro, as the mono rail can handle much sharper curves, and ply in populated areas.

The urban development ministry and Delhi government want to develop monorail corridors in various parts of Delhi to take public transport to congested colonies where mass rapid transport like Metro cannot be constructed.

Warnings to check track crossing fail, 3,000 caught so far this year

PUNE: The many safety warnings notwithstanding, people continue to cross railway tracks. As many as 3,159 cases of trespassing on tacks have been registered in Pune division in the last seven months, and 300 lives lost so far this year. The most recent death was incidentally that of a railway official, deputy station superintendent Ramkesh Meena, who was run over by a passenger train while crossing the track at Dehu Road station on Sunday afternoon.

Railway officials attribute illegal track crossing as one of the leading causes of these deaths. They said about 451 cases of illegal track crossing have been registered each month this year, most of which were booked at major stations, including Pune, Shivajinagar, Chinchwad, Pimpri and Hadapsar.

Last year, the railway administration had recorded 3,671 cases of illegal crossing of tracks in the first seven months. Though the numbers have reduced to some extent, officials here said that many people still choose to take short cuts instead of using foot over bridges (FOBs).

The administration said trespassing incidents are high at all stations between Pune and Lonavla, the busiest section in the division. All stations on this stretch have FOBs, but commuters avoid using them. At some places, unidentified persons have even breached walls in order to cross the tracks.

"The administration collected a fine of Rs 4.05 lakh in the cases booked so far this year. About 35 offenders who failed to pay the fine were sent to jail. A person can be fined Rs 1,000 and imprisoned for a maximum period of six months if they are caught crossing tracks illegally. People should use FOBs or manned crossing-gates to avoid accidents on tracks," a railway official said.

The division has identified some 'vulnerable' spots on the Pune-Lonavla, Pune-Daund and Kolhapur sections. Engine drivers have been instructed to honk at these spots and display boards have been put up at sensitive points, telling people to refrain from trespassing.

The division has also initiated steps to phase out unmanned level crossings. Five gates have been closed so far this year and all level crossing gates along the Pune-Lonavla and Pune-Daund routes are manned.

However, railway authorities said that people put their lives at risk at level crossings even when gates are closed for a train to pass.

Delhi Metro wants automatic fare revision formula

DMRC fuel costs have gone up 40 per cent in the last one year.
NEW DELHI, SEPT 3: Delhi Metro Rail Corporation will urge for an automatic fare revision formula from the fare fixation committee to be set up by the Government, said DMRC Managing Director, Mangu Singh, on the sidelines of an Indo-Japan conference.

DMRC has faced about 40 per cent increase in fuel costs in the last one year due to rising electricity fares in Delhi, said Singh.

DMRC has been demanding an upward fare revision for over a year now. The Urban Development Ministry has not yet set up a fare fixation committee. The Delhi Government is set to face elections this year.

An automatic fare revision formula will ensure that passenger fares go up in sync with costs and reduce political interference in fare setting.

DMRC's earnings have gone up by 15-17 per cent in the last one year primarily due to an increase in ridership, said Singh.

Delhi Metro moves 22-23 lakh passengers every day.

New shopping site in town, log on to Indian Railways

The world of online shopping has a new entrant, the Indian Railways. To leverage its huge user base on train ticketing website, Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has tied up with an online shopping company to sell consumer products ranging from bed sheets to shoes, tablets, and jewellery.

The online shopping mall of IRCTC (Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation) website, currently see 12 million train tickets booked every month, became operational this week.

“We have tied up with online shopping company Yebhi to starting a shopping channel. Our website has the largest user base of 2.5 crore people in the country. The IRCTC will provide the front operations, while the backend operations will be provided by the Yebhi,” an IRCTC official told The Sunday Standard.

Under the arrangement between the two, for every product sold through IRCTC, Yebhi will pay certain commission to the railways. We are keeping a watch on the experiment. The profits may flow in slowly, the IRCTC official added.

The e-commerce is expected to be worth over 12 billion US dollars in the next few years.

To lure train ticket booking visitors on the website, the shopping channel is even offering inaugural Rs 2000 discount and up to 85 percent off on various products. The website claims to offer 30,000 products from over 500 brands. A new user has to log into the site and create a username to start shopping. After the orders are placed, Yebhi with its backend staff would ship the product through courier companies at the users’ doorsteps.

The IRCTC officials say if their online shopping channel catches on, it will change the existing market. Unlike the other online shopping stores, our users are spread over every nook and corner of the country. Currently, the online shopping is limited to metros and urban centres, but the products are likely to reach even villages and smaller towns owing to IRCTC’s presence, an official said.

The IRCTC is upbeat about the new venture. But if the business model starts giving problems, the Railways is set to get flak for the poor services.

As announced by the rail budget, the IRCTC is in the process of upgrading its website to handle more users through its website. A whopping `100 crore were earmarked to make the site book 7,200 tickets per minute. This has been done to address the problem of the IRCTC website often crashing owing to the rush of users.

After IRCTC was stopped from providing food on the trains, it has started to diversify in other products. The IRCTC website also provides online booking of hotels and air tickets.
