Railways revenue showing upward swing: Kharge

‘If the trend continues, it will be easy to achieve the plan target’

Railway Minister M. Mallikarjun Kharge has said that the revenue mobilisation by the Railways has seen an upward swing, and if the trend continues it would be easy to achieve the plan target set for the year 2013-14.

“There has been a marked improvement in mobilisation of revenue because of increased movement of freight in the last couple of months raising hopes of the Ministry of achieving the plan targets,” Mr. Kharge said.

Speaking to The Hindu in Gulbarga on Tuesday, Mr. Kharge said that if the present trend of increased resource mobilisation continues, the Railways would be able to achieve its plan targets easily.

He participated in an awareness programme organised by the Information and Publicity Department and Press Information Bureau here on Tuesday.

He said among the reasons for the fall in the revenue of the Railways was the ban imposed on mining of iron ore in Karnataka and other States. Besides that economic crisis resulting in the fall in the production levels in the manufacturing sector in addition to fall in the growth of the infrastructure sector had contributed for the fall in the revenue of the Railways. If there is buoyancy in the economy and general improvement in the GDP rates, the revenue of the Railways would improve because of increased movement of freight. We have also taken measures to plug the leakages to save the precious resources of the Railways”.

Women loco pilots brim with confidence

Say that their dreams to get jobs in railways have come true

“My father is a private driver and my dream to get a job in a government department was fulfilled. Now, I can feed my family well and take care of my parents,” said G.V.S. Nalini Kumari, who completed her training for assistant loco pilot at the Electric Traction Training Centre (ETTC).

Many girls from poor families who secured jobs in South Central Railway (SCR) expressed confidence of performing their duties perfectly in the locos.

Eight women loco pilots completed training at the ETTC here and joined duty recently.

Satisfied lot

Nalini Kumari, a native of Bheemili in Visakhapatnam district, was selected as a loco pilot after she appeared for the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) test.

“I completed the diploma in electronics and communication engineering (ECE) and appeared for RRB examination. The encouragement from the staff in the training centre was good,” she said.

“I always dreamt of working in a government department and succeeded in getting the job in SCR. My father, Surendra Pandit, is a medical practitioner. After Intermediate, I completed ITI in electronics at Gaya and applied for RRB,” recalled Seema, a native of Bihar. She said the profession is good and women can take it up confidently.

Childhood ambition

“My father, late Mauki Kerai, was a loco pilot. When I was a kid, I used to go along with my father to the railway station and request him to take me into the engine cabin. Now, I am happy that I got the same job and my ambition to land in a Central Government department was fulfilled,” said another loco pilot, K. Reena, of Odisha.

Likewise, P. Lavanya, whose father is a labourer in Rajahmundry, B. Hymavathi of Kakinada, Ch. Sirisha of Mangalagiri and G. Sirisha of Visakhapatnam completed training at ETTC.

Girls praised

Vijayawada Divisional Railway Manager Pradeep Kumar praised the girls for taking up the job, which was dominated by men.

South Central Railway Women’s Welfare Organisation (SCRWWO) President Preeti Awasthi said the SCR should make separate arrangements for women pilots in the organisation.

“It is time Harbour Terminus, Tripunithura, Edappally and Kalamassery railway stations are renovated and upgraded,” Union Minister for Food, Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution System K.V. Thomas said on Monday.
This would enable more trains to stop here, he said after inaugurating the first escalator at a railway station in Kerala at Ernakulam Junction. The escalator on platform one of Ernakulam Junction was built at a cost of Rs 78.05 lakh. “Three more escalators and two lifts have been planned at the station. The tender process is on for building escalators at Ernakulam Town and Aluva railway stations,” Mr Thomas said.
Mr. Thomas said a master plan was ready to upgrade the station. Nothing much has moved on the ground so far to upgrade it into a world-class one despite it being promised in two railway budgets five to six years ago.
Food grains hub
He said plans were afoot to make Harbour Terminus station in Willingdon Island a hub for transporting food grains across Kerala.
At present, trains bring in food grains from other States to Kerala. Two ships can carry as much food grains as 40 goods trains. Thus, ships from ports in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha could bring rice to Kochi, from where it could be taken by trains to places across Kerala, he said.
A modern Food Corporation of India (FCI) godown had been planned at the island for this purpose, he said. The prompt completion of Venduruthy rail overbridge is crucial for this.
Mr. Thomas said the railways must roll out modern coaches and rebuild/modernise British-era railway stations that were aplenty. He said old, dirty coaches and ill-maintained railway stations were the bane of India’s railway system. Bio-toilets remained a far cry.
