Pantry car of Dibrugarh Rajdhani Express catches fire, all safe

Guwahati: Passengers on board the Rajdhani Express from Dibrugarh to New Delhi had a narrow escape after the pantry car of the train caught fire early Tuesday. No causality has been reported so far.

The pantry car caught fire when the train was passing through Dharamtul near Morigaon in Assam at around 5 am. Dharamtul is around 70 kilometres from Guwahati.

The fire has now been brought under control. The Rajdhani Express is still stationed at the accident spot, reports said.

Train number 12423 Dibrugarh Town-New Delhi left Dibrugarh at 8.30 pm yesterday night and was scheduled to arrive at Guwahati today morning at 6.40 am.

Senior railway and district officials are at the spot.

More details are awaited.

Its final! Konkan Railway Corporation to scrap skybus project

MARGAO: The Konkan Railway Corporation (KRC) has finally decided to scrap the skybus project and dismantle the 1.6km test track at Margao "in order to prevent recurrent expenditure" on it. The decision was taken following the poor response to its invitation for global expression of interest for upgradation/maintenance of the skybus test track at Margao.

"As we are incurring considerable expenditure in monitoring the test track, and as we are getting no revenue for commercial exploitation of the project, the board decided that there will be no further expenses (on its maintenance) and to scrap the skybus project," said KRC's managing director Bhanu Prakash Tayal. The KRC's assessment that there was no certainty of the market ahead for the skybus project in view of the development of the metro and monorail train, prompted the decision, Tayal said.

The equipments that were procured from various companies for erection of the test track of the skybus at Margao will be returned to the respective firms upon its dismantling, it was informed.

Tayal disclosed that the KRC didn't succeed in developing a "swing arrestor" and "switching apparatus" for the skybus that could address the safety concerns over the skybus track.

"The skybus swings when it reaches a curve. To prevent this, a swing arrestor needs to be developed. We could not develop it fully," Tayal admitted.

All stations in Goa along Konkan Railway route will be upgraded: Tayal

MARGAO: All railway stations in Goa along the Konkan Railway route will be upgraded, said KRC's managing director Bhanu Prakash Tayal on Thursday.

3 crore will be spent on the upgradation of stations in the current financial year, he said.

Stating that the KRC's proposal of acquiring more land for the purpose of expansion of the Margao station has been pending with the state government for the last three years, Tayal said they were now looking at alternatives to go ahead with the station expansion plans within the existing available land resources. "We may have to go in for re-designing (of the station) within the existing land," he said.

A foot overbridge and a ticket booking counter are among the Margao station expansion plans, it was informed. Besides, two more platforms and two more lines will be set up at the Margao railway station, Tayal said.

"There are currently five lines at the Margao station. The sixth line has already been sanctioned, and the seventh line will come along with two more platforms," he said.

'INR 2,500 cr Faridabad Metro to be completed by 2014'

Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said that the work on extension of Metro rail service to Faridabad city is on and will be completed by next year.

"Extension of Metro rail service is under progress at Faridabad city at a cost of INR 2,500 crore which will be completed by 2014," he said.

Hooda said that the Haryana government will spend about INR 470 crore on the extension of Metro rail line from Faridabad to Ballabgarh. Also, the construction of Badarpur flyover has been completed at a cost of INR 340 crore, he added.

Extending his best wishes to the people on the occasion of Vijay Dashmi, Hooda said that the government has launched various projects for the development of Faridabad.

He said that during the tenure of the previous INLD government, INR 431.53 crore were spent on the development of Faridabad whereas during last 8 years the Congress government has already spent INR 4167.95 crore on its development and projects costing INR 437.42 crore are in progress.

Work on infrastructure for 12-car rakes picks up speed

NAVI MUMBAI: Citizens will have to wait for more than a year before the first local train with a 12-car rake will clatter along the track to CST. The longer trains are right now the only answer that Central Railway (CR) can offer to tackle the IT city's ever-worsening commute problem.

With the monsoon receding, the work on creating infrastructure to run 12-car services has picked up again. The Rs 714-crore project will increase passenger carrying capacity on the CST-Panvel and CST-Andheri lines. Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) has set December 2015 as the deadline for the project.

"The work is progressing as per schedule. So far, 10% of the work on the ground has been completed. During the monsoon, the pace of work decreases to ensure that any problem that may crop up does not have a spill-over effect on day-to-day train operations," a senior MRVC official said.

Once the work is completed, CR will be able to run 12-car rakes with a capacity of 2,300 passengers on the Harbour line, compared to just about 1,750 in the existing 9-car rakes.

"The project is challenging in that the work has to be done without disturbing the rail traffic. Apart from extending the length of platform, we will have to remodel the yard at CST, replace the signals and conduct work related to the overhead wires," the official said.

The funds for the project were sanctioned in the railway budget presented in March 2012. However, the process to award the contract was held up till November last year because of the absence of a government resolution from the state government. The work on the ground finally began only last December. The project was approved after a request in 2009 by then chief minister Ashok Chavan

City and Industrial Development Corporation (Cidco) will share half the cost for the CST-Panvel route. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) will bear half the burden for the CST-Andheri track.

He said that a total of 153 coaches will be required to run 12-car services on the Harbor line, which has witnessed 8-10% annual passenger growth in the past few years. "Apart from comparatively poor frequency, Habour line also does not have a fast corridor. Hence, trains are extremely crowded during peak hours. The augmentation of coaches will help solve the over-crowding problem," he said.

Harbour line trains run every 5 minutes against one every 3 minutes on Western Railway and 4 minutes on CR's main line.

Now, book online for your railway food

Each time Ajita Singh, aspiring to become a chartered accountant, travels from Delhi to her home town, Lucknow, she prefers to munch chips and biscuits rather than buy food on the train, being sceptical about the quality.

This time, though, she tried something different - placed an order online and the food was delivered to her, at her berth, for less than Rs 150.

The Rs 4,000-crore railway catering sector, a subject of debate on the quality of food served, is witnessing a change. Responding to the need are a couple of websites that have come up with a 'market place model for railway catering'.

Travelkhana.com and Merafoodchoice.com are among the leading players in this space. Both have a tie-up with over 200 restaurants spread across 100 cities, where they can serve meals for individuals or groups. The cost could vary starting at around Rs 130. All one has to do is provide the PNR number on the ticket or the originating and destination station, along with the date of travel. The websites will let you choose from multiple cuisines and prices. The delivery boy will have to buy a platform ticket to give you the food. Both these companies started with an investment of under Rs 1 crore and expect venture capitalist funding in the coming months.

"We are in a very advanced level of talks with the Railway Board for making us a recognised partner in rail catering," says Pushpinder Singh who started travelkhana.com in August 2012. He plans to soon start a mobile application.

"We serve about 500 meals in a day and reach 158 cities. People want quality food and affordable prices", says Piyush Kasliwal, a software professional who started merafoodchoice.com in November 2012. The websites usually get a cut of 15-30 per cent in the profits of the restaurant.

Pushpinder expects large fast-food chains to tie-up with him soon.

Currently, under the standard prices decided by the Railway Board, the caterers must serve a vegetarian meal at a maximum of Rs 50 and a non-vegetarian at 55. But, usually, charges go up to Rs 85 and above, according to railway officials. "Most of them overcharge as they say that in the current inflation, it's very difficult to provide food at the rates decided by the railways," says an official. In 2010, the catering of Indian Railways was taken away from Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation. Currently, a little over 30,000 catering units take care of food in the trains and at stations. Dinesh Trivedi, who was railway minister in early 2012, had announced he'd start a similar 'book a meal policy', where people could book a meal of their choice before boarding.

There have been success stories earlier, too. For instance, Comesum, a vendor for IRCTC, has about 20 outlets at railway stations and serves 70-80 trains but its reach is limited. It's here that the online model can perhaps fill the gaps.
