Delhi Metro Tokens at “Railway Stations” & Railway Tickets at “Metro Stations” soon!

In a bid to attract railway passengers, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is working on a plan to make available tokens at railway stations and railway tickets at metro stations.

“Talks are on with officials to sell mutually tickets of each service. We hope we will be able to start the unique service, which would benefit both the railways and DMRC,” said Sharat Sharma, director (Operations), DMRC.

According to the plan, computerized token vending machines for selling metro tokens and smart cards will be set up at reservation counters and outets of the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Ltd (IRCTC) at all four major railway stations - New Delhi, Old Delhi, Nizamuddin and Anand Vihar.

All these stations have metro stations nearby.

Similarly, railway tickets will be available at metro station counters, if the plan takes shape.

“We are exploring the modalities to see if the metro smart cards can be used as multi-purpose cards so that people can have meals at IRCTC counters and pay through the metro smart cards,” Sharma added.

This unique initiative will help increase Delhi Metro’s commuter base during non-peak hours, said a DMRC official.

The DMRC had earlier started selling pre-vended smart cards at shopping complexes, social and religious gatherings in an attempt to make smart cards and commuting by metro popular among people. DMRC also plans to start selling pre-vended tokens of different denominations, Sharma said

Rajdhani, Shatabdi fares to go up from tomorrow

Passengers will have to shell outmore for travelling in Rajdhani, Duronto and Shatabdi trains from Thursday as Railways has increased catering charges in these premier trains by about two to four percent .

The revision in food tariff, which is included in the total fare in premier trains, also comes with a revised menu.

This is the second hike for premier service passengers in the last 10 days as Railways had hiked passenger fares by two per cent for all trains effective from October 7 by linking the fare structure with the fuel adjustment component.

Those who have purchased tickets earlier will have to pay the difference in the fare to TTEs in trains from October 17, a senior Railway Ministry official said.

The second class AC fare from here to Thiruvananthapuram will now cost Rs. 4,289 instead of Rs. 3,980 while in the Madras Rajdhani, the existing fare of Rs. 3,285 for Chennai has been increased to Rs. 3,385.

The catering charge in premier trains has been increased after 14 years, as it was last revised in 1999.

According to the revised fare, a passenger will have to pay Rs. 2,510 instead of Rs. 2,435 for AC II ticket in Mumbai Rajdhani. In Howrah Rajdhani, the AC II fare has been increased from Rs. 2,490 to Rs. 2,554.

The tariff has been hiked by Rs. 14 only, from here to Bhubaneswar in Bhubaneswar Rajdhani but in the return journey, a passenger will have to pay Rs. 87 more than previous fare.

The revision in food tariff also comes with a revised menu like the introduction of fish fry in AC-1 and Executive Class and stuffed paratha, channa kulcha and packaged flavoured milk for breakfast in all classes of premier trains.

The menu also includes stuffed kathi roll for both vegetarian and non-veg passengers.

However, chocolates, toffees and fruit juice have been done away with in the new menu.

The rate of morning and evening tea has been reduced by nearly 30 to 40%, but the rate of breakfast, lunch and dinner has been increased by 50-60%.

A new concept of combo meal is being introduced as alternate meal on Rajdhani and Duronto trains, which are priced at half the cost of the regular lunch or dinner rate.

Railways serves about 3.3 crore meals a year in these trains. The AC-II, AC-III and Chair Car passengers comprise around 90 % of total passengers in premier trains.

Railways to pay family harassed by crowd

NEW DELHI: Ever travelled on train and been harassed by unauthorized occupants who forcibly take up space in crowded compartments?

Holding the railways guilty of deficiency of service, a central district forum has awarded a family of four Rs 30,000, including litigation costs, after it faced physical inconvenience and mental agony on a journey from Amritsar to Delhi when a large crowd trespassed on the train and the ticket examiner was unable to get it to disembark.

Dev Kant, Satwinder Kaur, Harisharan Singh and Harleen Kaur had on October 20, 2009, travelled by Moori Express and reserved and confirmed their seats on sleeper coach S-7.

"At Ludhiana railway station, a big crowd intruded/trespassed into the compartment and captured the reserved seats and sleepers by force. They also sat on the floor of the compartment, thereby blocking all passages to the toilet. The TTE did not act on the request to call railway police personnel, who were supposed to be available in the running train or at the GRP post at the next station. The complainants remained disturbed and could not sleep nor use the toilet. They suffered physical inconvenience and mental agony," said the order.

The complainants sent a legal notice to the Railways and called upon it to pay a sum of Rs 60,000 each for deficiency in service and Rs 50,000 on account of mental agony, harassment and physical torture. Allowing the complaint, the forum held the Railways and its officials duty-bound to take steps to prevent entry of unauthorized persons in the reserved compartment.

While the Railways admitted the case of the complainant vide its reply, it stated that unauthorized persons were evacuated at Ambala station and that the matter was informed to the GRP. It denied any deficiency in service. The Railways claimed that the TTE was present in the coach and took prompt steps to get removed the unauthorized passengers.

The forum said the trespassers entered the reserved compartment of the train where complainants were travelling.
