Mumbaikar files PIL opposing Mumbai Metro Rail project

Mumbai metro

The Bombay High Court on Monday asked the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA), Reliance Metro, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and the Fire Department to file affidavits in reply to a petition opposing the phase one of the Metro railway which will connect suburban Versova with Ghatkopar.

The bench, headed by Chief Justice Mohit Shah, gave the direction in response to a public interest litigation filed by Monica Matani, a city resident.

The court has sought replies by October 24. According to Mathani, the project violates several safety norms. For instance, the PIL says, while the latest rules mandate six metres open space around every building, the buildings adjoining the Metro network stand closer, which would make fire brigade vehicles difficult to move in if fire breaks out. Also, high-tension electric wires run over the metro bridges and this poses a fire hazard, the PIL states.

The petitioner had last year filed the public interest litigation in the Bombay High Court alleging violation of Development Control Regulations (DCRs) and fire safety norms during the construction of the Mumbai Metro phase I (Versova- Andheri-Ghatkopar), .

Matani had claiemd that the city fire department had granted No Objection Certificate to the project without proper verifications. Besides, the state Urban Development Department, planning body MMRDA and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had violated several rules and have put lives of the citizens living near the upcoming metro stations as well as that of potential commuters in danger, the petition had claimed.

Apart from cancellation of the NOC, the PIL has also prayed for stay to the construction of these 12 stations.

Delhi Metro stations to be renamed in Phase-III

NEW DELHI: After roads, it's the turn of Metro stations to be renamed according to the demands of the local population and businesses.

NDelhi Metro plans to change the names of several stations in Phase-III of the network after a deluge of requests from resident welfare associations and others.

"There were many requests to change the name of Metro stations during community interactions. A committee was set up to look into them and several names have been changed," said a senior Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) official.

So while Ishwar Nagar will now be called Sukhdev Vihar after the RWA's objection, Mukundpur will be Majlis Park and Jasola Vihar, an emblem of community unity: it will be called Jasola Vihar Shaheen Bagh. The committee set up to look into the requests consisted of the transport commissioner, additional commissioner of the transport department as well as members from Delhi Metro and the urban development ministry.

The changes were mostly based on the relevance of the proposed name, said Delhi Metro spokesman Anuj Dayal. For instance, Greater Kailash Enclave will be called just Greater Kailash since Greater Kailash-I is adjacent to the station while Greater Kailash II is opposite. Similarly, the Dhaula Kuan station will now be called South Campus, a suggestion received during community interactions.

The Jasola Vihar Metro station has also been renamed, a suggestion posed by the committee itself. "The committee felt that the station will be better named as Jasola Vihar Shaheen Bagh, as both localities are nearby," said the official.

Unofficially, sources said that the station thus named would also serve to underline the contribution of both the communities better. The IGI airport Metro station will also be renamed. It will now be called Terminal 1-IGI airport, on the request of DIAL.

It's not the first time that the Delhi Metro has renamed Metro stations after requests from the local population. In Phase I and II too, station names were changed after such requests. For instance, Trinagar Metro station was renamed as Inderlok while the Vivekanandapuri station is now called Shastri Nagar.

BJP reserves 11 trains to flock supporters to CM’s Patna rally

The BJP is pulling out all stops to make its prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi's maiden political rally in his rival Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's home turf here on October 27 a mega success.

State BJP stalwart and former deputy CM, Sushil Kumar Modi said the party had reserved 11 trains for the 'Hoonkar rally' and would install a large dynamic screen as a backdrop on stage to create a larger than life image of the Gujarat CM.

The 30-feet LED screen would display slides showing famous historical places of the state like Nalanda University, Bodh Gaya temple, Gol Ghar among others and portraits of great personalities. The personalities whose portraits would be relayed include hero of 1857 revolt Veer Kunwar Singh, first President of Independent India Rajendra Prasad and Loknayak Jayprakash Narayan, all hailing from the state, Sushil Modi said.

He said for a comprehensive coverage of the rally, the party had decided to press into service around 12 of its own cameramen for capturing bit-by-bit picture of the crowd and other memorable events.

Leader of Opposition in Bihar Assembly Nand Kishore Yadav said that for the first time, linear sound system would be used in the state so that everybody could hear the speech clearly.

Bihar BJP president Mangal Pandey said 11 trains have been reserved for people to come to the state capital for the "Hoonkar rally". Besides, over 3,000 buses have been booked for transportation of people from various parts of the state, he added. BJP's 91 MLAs, 12 MPs and office bearers were travelling across the state to drum up huge support for the rally. Former minister Ashwani Choubey was touring the districts on "Hoonkar rath" to mobilise people for the event, he said.

Pandey said Sushil Modi, Yadav and other senior party leaders were taking stock of arrangements for the rally daily.

Asked if there would be special enclosure for minority Muslims coming to the rally to highlight Narendra Modi's secular credentials as was done at Ajmer and Delhi rallies, Sushil Modi answered in the negative.

"There will be no separate enclosure for VIPs, women or people from the Muslim community," he said.

He said that there would be no chairs at the rally and people would have to sit on the ground.

A total of 30 LED screens would be installed in every nook and corner of the Gandhi Maidan, so that people sitting at a distance could also have a clear view of the stage.

Besides Narendra Modi, party president Rajnath Singh, Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley, actor-politician and party MP from Patna Saheb Shatrughan Sinha and other state leaders would participate in the rally, the state party chief said.

Industrialists demand Nanjangud-Nilambur rail line

WAYNAD: Representatives of Mysore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) and their counterparts from Malabar region on Monday resolved to pressurize the Union government to approve and start work on Nanjangud-Nilambur railway line with a 10km flyover through Bandipur national park to boost the trade and tourism activities of both the states.

Representatives of these two business bodies who met here on Monday said that Union government and state governments should be made to realize the importance of this connectivity for two states, particularly the regions development.

"To remove apprehensions of environmentalists that rail line passing through Bandipur national park will affect the tranquility and serenity of the tiger park, a ten-km stretch of this route should have a railway flyover," the meeting suggested, asking both Karnataka and Kerala state governments to share the project cost of Rs 672 crore to lay a rail line of 72 km from Nanjangud to Sultan Bathery.

Meeting, discussing the adverse impact on trade and tourism of both the states following a ban on the night movement of vehicles, concluded that at present only 1,500 trucks carrying goods from both the directions are passing through this route against the earlier movement of 3,000-4,000 lorries daily.

"This reduction in number of trucks has badly affected goods movement to both the states," they noted, urging the Union government to take up the work on priority basis.

"Chief ministers of both the states which are ruled by Congress should evince keen interest to get approval and start the work," the meeting pointed out adding that sharing half of the project cost for these two chief ministers is not a big investment.

Both the chambers of commerce today agreed to constitute a consultative committee and take up the matter with union and state governments through this committee and convince the need and urgency of this project.

BIFFes chugs in on December 26 with special films on trains

There will be over 245 screenings of Indian and international films at the sixth Bangalore International Film Festival from December 26, 2013 to January 2, 2014.

More than 140 films will be screened over seven days, at seven screens

Trains, which have captured the imagination of filmmakers since the first movie shot by the Lumiere brothers in the 19th century, will be the focus of special genre films to be screened at the sixth edition of the Bangalore International Film Festival (6BIFFes) from December 26, 2013 to January 2, 2014.

Film including 27 Down by Awtar Kaul and Murder on the Orient Express by Sidney Lumet will be among the special films screened, said H.N. Narahari Rao, artistic director of 6BIFFes.

Venues

Viewers will be treated to more than 140 films across seven screens as part of the film festival.

These include three screens at Fun Cinemas on Cunningham Road, two screens at Fame Lido, and Sulochana and Priyadarshini screens at the Department of Information and Badami House. “Totally there will be over 245 screenings,” Mr. Rao said.

What’s on offer

Films have been classified under the following categories: retrospective, masters of cinema, train and cinema, special focus on Iceland, Korea, Taiwan and Germany, international film critics award winners, cinema of the world, Asian cinema, and chitrabharati — Kannada cinema.

Thespian Rajkumar’s films are expected to be a major attraction in the retrospective category.

Films of French director Claire Denis, Serbian filmmaker Goran Paskaljeviæ, U.K.’s Mike Light and India’s own Bimal Roy will also be featured in this category.

Samurai films from Japan, which have not been screened in the country so far, will be a major attraction for students of cinema. Gate of Hell by Teinosuke Kinugasa, The Crucified Lovers by Kenji Mizoguchi, Benten Boy by Ito Disukai and Fort of Death by Eiichi Kudo will be some of them.

“We are trying to get at least five Hungarian films including Mefisto by István Szabó. We are also trying to get some landmark films from Latin America,” said N. Vidyashankar, deputy artistic director

Besides, he said, “For the first time, cine enthusiasts will have an opportunity to watch Italian neo-realist films including Vittorio De Seta’s Bread, Love and Dreams and Jina Tolo Brigada, and Luigi Comencini’s Bandits of Orgosolo.

Delay

However, the international competition section is a casualty in this edition too — it was missing from the fifth edition — as the organisers are hard pressed for time. “Had the artistic director been appointed in July, the competition section could have been included in this festival by starting the process early. Now, it is too late,” Mr. Rao said.

The government directed the Karnataka Chalanachitra Academy to hold 6BIFFes only in September. And, according to sources, the festival’s organising committee, chaired by Information Minister Santosh Lad, has not met even once so far.

Metro project runs into trouble

GANDHINAGAR: Even before its take off, the Rs 22,000-crore Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar metro rail project has run into serious trouble with its vendors alleging major corruption in due payments.

Around 40 vendors created a scene at Metro-Link Express for Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad (MEGA) company's headquarter in Gandhinagar on Monday over non-payment of around Rs 80 crore. They left the premises only after being assured that their dues would be cleared before October 30.

One of the agitated vendors alleged, "Around Rs 300 crore land filling work contracts were allocated by the earlier chairman Sanjay Gupta to us without the tendering process. He resigned suddenly and our payments were stopped by the company. Gupta had also issued postdated cheques which have bounced. The company also stopped the ongoing work and payment after July." Gupta had resigned in August end.

When contacted, chief executive officer of MEGA Vijay Nehra said, "I came to know that some vendors have come to represent over the pending payments by the earlier management. The new board has taken over recently and also discussed the issue. The matter will be sorted out shortly."
