New Delhi: Commuters of suburban trains in all cities in the country can now voice there issues to the railways.

A Parliamentary Standing Committee on Railways looking into the issues related to suburban rail services and security of women passengers has invited opinions from commuters to improve the services.

Suburban rail passengers or associations representing the passengers may send their memoranda, views and suggestions to the email ID – comrail@sansad.nic.in – or by post to Director (PAC&R), Lok Sabha Secretariat, Room No.439, Parliament House Annexe, New Delhi-110001, or fax it to 011-23034089.

Passengers can submit their petitions on issues related to existing suburban services, suggestions to improve services, problems faced by passengers on the suburban trains and stations and security of women passengers, according to an official release.

Passengers who wish to give oral evidence before the parliamentary standing committee may approach the Lok Sabha Secretariat for consideration.

Real-time status of Central Railway trains on Mobiles

Mumbai: MUMBAI: You can now check the arrival and departure status of 825 of CR’s Mainline services in real time, from your smart phone or your personal computer.

Updates on all of Central Railway’s Mainline services can be accessed by logging on to the website trainenquiry.com, which already provides real-time train running status of mail/express trains across India. “The user has to enter the station name or a code on the website. It automatically leads to a page that provides a list of services which will leave in the next two hours from that destination. The user then has to click on any one service from the list to obtain the train running status and estimated arrival time of the service at stations enroute. The page is automatically refreshed every two minutes,” CR’s General Manager Mukesh Nigam told.

However, in the absence of any Android application, users will have to access the website from their internet browsers.

CR also plans to put up big screens at stations that will reflect the train running status at several destinations. At present, both CR and Western Railway have a Train Management System (TMS) which helps real-time monitoring of trains in the control room. The actual countdown of trains in minutes is displayed at stations, with announcements.

Real-time updates on the website could be activated once the suburban network between Lonavala-CST and Igatpuri-CST was integrated with the Control Office Application (COA). The COA plans and controls the movement of scheduled and unscheduled trains through a computer-aided interface. It also enables passengers to track the movement of long-distance trains through the railway website or the enquiry number 139.

The integration of the suburban network is a challenging task as local trains run on four corridors with an average frequency of four minutes, while long-distance trains operate only on two corridors.

Heading: Relief For Commuters

How It Works

Select the ‘station’ option on

Enter the stations from where you need to check arrival and departure

You will be redirected to a list of trains scheduled to depart in next two hours

Select a specific train and you will get its real-time status, expected arrival time at the station and actual arrival time at the preceding station

The information will help commuters alter their travel plans if a train is delayed or cancelled

Commuters currently can access the actual countdown for a train in minutes only after reaching the station.

Solar Power to operate Gurgaon Railway Station

Gurgaon: Solar power will soon run Gurgaon railway station. Minister of State for Railways Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary Thursday laid the foundation stone for 25 KW solar power plant here, being undertaken under RITES’ CSR and Sustainability Projects. In a first, the solar power plant will be set up on the platform’s roof where the panels will be placed and solar electricity generated, an official said. Appreciating the efforts of RITES, the minister said of 365 days, India gets full sun for almost 300 days but the vast resource of solar energy potential remains unutilised. On the development of the railway station, he said Gurgaon is known for its IT hubs, multi-storeyed shining buildings and railways will spare no efforts in making sure the station matches the rest of the infrastructure. Chaudhary said by utilising the platform roof, there is no issue of land acquisition and passengers can also get shelter from rain and sun while aesthetics of the station will improve. The project, even if small, holds large potential and railways will pursue similar initiatives either under corporate social responsibilities (CSR) of its public sector undertakings or on railways’ own initiative. RITES Chairman and Managing Director Rajeev Mehrotra said this is the first attempt to utilise a platform’s roof for placing panels and generating solar electricity.

“If replicated on a larger scale, it could help in reducing the Indian Railways’ carbon footprint and achieving the target of sourcing at least 10 percent of energy from renewable sources like solar power and biomass,” he said. This solar plant is being installed with the assistance of BHEL electronics division, Bangalore and is fully funded by RITES. The project, costing nearly Rs.60 lakh, will be completed by the end of 2013. The successful completion of the project will open up new possibilities for these kinds of projects for the railways and RITES.

Railways to scrap combo meals in favour of regular ones in Rajdhani trains

Flooded with complaints against change of menu in Rajdhani and Duronto, Railways has decided to restore regular meals in the premier trains.

Railways had revised the menu and the tariff for premier services from October 17 and accordingly, a new concept of combo meal was introduced as an every alternate meal on long distance Rajdhani and Duronto trains.

"The introduction of combo meal met opposition from passengers and as a result, we have decided to replace it with the regular meal," a senior Railway Ministry official involved with the catering service in premier trains said.

However, the change in menu will not affect the fare structure. The meal rate for Rajdhani /Shatabdi/Duronto trains is included in the ticket fare.

Besides, quantities reduced in certain dishes have also been restored as there were complaints against quantity of food being served in these trains, he said.

Senior officers were deputed on these trains to ascertain the response from the passengers on the changes in the menu. "Based on the feedback from passengers, changes were effected again," the official said, adding that "(collection of) passengers' feedback will now be a regular exercise."

Tariff in premier trains was revised after 14 years as the last revision was in 1999. A Railway official had said that input cost, like of raw materials, had increased manifold since the last decade, so the catering rate was revised for Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Duronto trains.
