People Recount: Train on Kadur-Chikmaglur Railway Line finally arrives after waiting for 87 Yrs

Kadur-Chikmagalur railway line is finally thrown open to public from November 19, brings with it a sense of cheer among locals. “We were little school boys in the 1940s. We were very excited to hear when people told us that a rail will come to Chikmagalur,” said a nostalgic SN Srikanta, a 76-year-old man from Chikmagalur who now lives in Bangalore, “The rail has come, but after a long wait.”

To Srikanta, whose father and uncles fought for the country’s freedom, the train means a lot more than just a whistle-blowing chain of bogies. It is the realisation of an 87-year-old dream of the people of his district.

Chikmagalur is a commercial hub that attracted Europeans for cultivation of tea, coffee and rubber. During British rule, public exerted pressure on authorities to launch the Kadur-Chikmagalur railway line due to which the then district board collected a railway cess of Rs5.5 lakh.

The project, however, was turned out when a survey by British rulers reported poor economic feasibility.

“I used to play badminton with railway survey people,” Srikanta narrated, “and watch Britishers play cricket in our district. It is also believed that cricket was introduced to India by Europeans from Chikmagalur.”

To S Shivaram who resided in Chikmagalur for 65 years, the train reminds him of his primary schooldays. “We used to joke about the train and form a human chain as we sang Train-to-Chikmagalur. We didn’t look at it beyond a joke,” the former high-school teacher said.

He pointed out that there were no serious attempts by leaders to make it real.

After Independence, the railway department conducted another long term survey that once again reflected lack of commercial viability. The then chief minister, K Hanumanthaiah, sanctioned a cement-concrete road instead, so that the two places could be connected. After a series of developments, the project that took several years to be completed is now ready to be of service.

The residents of Chikmagalur were thrilled to see the three coaches led by the engine during the trial run that was successfully completed on October 18 this year.

Central Railway plan Wi-Fi at Mumbai’s Suburban Stations, on Trains

MUMBAI: Commuters can get Wi-Fi service at stations and in moving trains if railway authorities approve plans of a cellular firm, which wants to offer the technology by piggybacking on Central Railway’s initiative that allows real-time tracking of trains on smartphones. A cellular firm has approached CR’s Mumbai divisional office with a proposal that will allow commuters to use wireless computer network.

CR is not averse to the proposal as commuters will get a value-added service at zero cost of the railways. In fact, the railways can also seek revenue-sharing model from firms, who may eventually bag the contract for the project.

Explaining the working of the system, an official said, “As soon as a commuter with a smartphone enters a suburban station on CR, a pop-up will appear on his cell that will display the real-time status of trains (through trainenquiry.com). The commuter can use the service for say, five minutes, to track the position of trains. If he wants to use wi-fi for longer, he will have to pay for it.”

CR also said that charges have not yet been finalized, but these will be affordable. The official said, “It will not be as expensive as the ones at airports as the average commuter will not like to spend much.”

It is not still clear how the payment system will work but commuters may be able to pay online through debit/credit card or by using the online-banking system.

The official said that the company that wins the contract will create the infrastructure to provide Wi-Fi connectivity.

The official said the Wi-Fi service will act as a backup high-speed network option as the 3G services offered by cellular service providers may not be strong at some stations, particularly when trains are on the move.

He further said, “For the Wi-Fi to work, the operator will have to design the revenue model in such a way that it is extremely cheaper compared to 3Gplans offered to commuters by their service providers.”

The official said commuters can use this Wi-Fi facility without changing their existing service provider.

Youth cured of cancer declared ‘unfit’ for Railway job

Thiruvananthapuram: It is common knowledge that certain types of cancer are curable if detected early and treated on time. But it seems that the medical experts in the Southern Railway’s Hospitals are not that confident about the efficacy of the cancer treatment here from their approach to a candidate who courageously fought against cancer and completely got cured of the disease.

T Abhilash, a 28-year-old B Tech graduate in Electronics and Communication from Cheruvayoor in Malappuram district didn’t break down when he was diagnosed with cancer in 2009.

He underwent treatment at the Regional Cancer Centre (RCC) here and got completely cured.

Meanwhile he passed the B Tech examination in 2011 and cleared the written and psychological tests for the Asst Loco Pilot post conducted by the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) here in 2012 and securedthe 107th rank.

Document verification was held on January 9, 2013 and Abhilash was advised to report for medical examination at the Railway Sub-divisional Hospital, Erode.

Giving him a shock, the Additional Chief Medical Superintendent who examined him declared that he was unfit for the job.

When Abhilash requested for re-medical examination, he was directed to the Railway Regional Headquarters Hospital at Perambur, near Chennai.

The Additional Chief Health Director at the Railway Hospital, Perambur declared him unfit for any category of job under the railway service citing that he was found to have swelling in small tiny sub mental lymph nodes. Subsequently, Abhilash’s candidature was cancelled on April 18 ,2013.

But Abhilash who filed a complaint with the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT), Ernakulam told that the doctor who was supposed to conduct the re- examination didn’t examine him and made him wait for four days at Perambur and tried to avoid him.

“On the fourth day, when he went out without examining me, making me wait for the whole day, I stood in front of his vehicle and told him that I had no money left to stay back and requested him to examine me. He asked me to go to his room where a junior doctor handed over a report in a sealed cover,” he said.

The RRB which had filed a report on the notice of the CAT, Ernakulam, cited that it did not have to disclose the reason for medical unfitness under Rule 222 of the Indian Railway Establishment Code Vol 1.

Meanwhile, Abhilash approached the Medical Board of the Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode, which certified that he underwent a thorough clinical examination and investigation and various departments concerned had found that his vision, audio gram, hearing, cardiology consultation, echo evaluation, neurological investigation suggested that he was normal and steady and was completely fit for the job.

The Medical Officer in-charge and additional professor with the Division of Clinical Oncology, RCC, R Rejnish Kumar also certified that Abhilash had undergone surgery and post- operative radiation for Micro-epidemic Carcinoma Oropharynx and now he is free of disease.

“Declaring one unfit for ‘Aye one’ category based on Vision Acuity standards of highest nature is understandable. But how can a doctor pronounce one unfit for any kind of job without examining him?” Abhilash asks.

“I was not affected this much even when I tested positive for cancer,” he said.
