YatraChef puts favourite food on rail passengers' menu

Kochi-based start up, Eleventh Hour Innovations Private Ltd, has launched 'Yatra Chef', which provides rail passengers their favorite menu while on the move. With this, the company feels passengers no longer have to depend on the limited menu of the Indian Railway Catering service.

The company has been set up by three young entrepreneurs, Arun Rajan, Rameez Ashraf and Suchithra Sumadevi.

YatraChef helps passengers to order the food of their choice by logging in to www.yatrachef.com or with the help of a multi-lingual call centre. It has made available a chat centre to assist passengers manually.

For instance, involving train delays, passengers can shift the order to other stations.

After logging in, a passenger has to enter the passenger name record (PNR) or train number, date of journey, followed by clicking the 'Food' option to place an order. Customers will have to pay the amount on delivery. The items and the prices is given on the website and no extra payment is needed, says the company.

Arun Rajan, CEO of the company, said it plans to launch online payment service soon.

Eleventh Hour has tied up with a network of 100 hotels, which include restaurants, food plazas, fast food chains and caterers across the country. It plans to expand the network to 300 hotels in the next six months.

"The service points would be increased to 130 rail stations by March 2014, up from the current 100," said Rameez Ashraf, company's head of the process.

It also plans to make available a choice of three hotels per station for the customers (including vegetarian), said Ashraf.

Tatanagar Railway Station to sport Hitech Retro-Reflective Signages

Tatanagar will be the first station under Chakradharpur Railway Division to sport hi-tech retro-reflective signage. Retro-reflective modular signage panels will be mounted between November 28 and December 15.

The displays will flash directions and public utility messages just like the old ones but do a better job. They are expected to save electricity and yet flash brighter than their conventional counterparts. Railway sources said it was nearly a Rs 18-lakh project.

“Existing glow-signs are over 10 years old. These will be replaced by the modular retro-reflective panels. Hence, slash power bills. We have roped in a private agency to implement the task,” said Anil Kumar Patel, Sr.DEN (Co-ordination) of Chakradharpur division.

The new panels would be mounted on platforms, as well as the entrance, exit and circulating areas. They will indicate ticket , reservation and enquiry counters waiting rooms, dormitories and other facilities on the station premises.

The signage will boast yellow-black and red-white colour combinations.

Railway sources revealed the Divisional Railway Manager of Chakradharpur Rajiv Agarwal had recently given a nod for the project. The requisite funds had been sanctioned by headquarters of South-Eastern Railway in Garden Reach, Calcutta.

On their benefits, Tatanagar station manager Awtar Singh said the new panels would be visible enough tohelp people locate key public utility facilities from a distance.

The technology is effective. Reflective sign faces are manufactured with glass beads or prismatic reflectors that imbedded in the sheeting so that the face reflects light sources, therefore making the sign appear more bright and visible to the eye.

“This is an ambitious project that will change the look of the station. Tatanagar station assumes significance as it falls on the Howrah-Mumbai route,” he said.

South-Eastern Railway general manager G.C. Agarwal may inspect Tatanagar station on December 20. Railway authorities of Chakradharpur division have set December 15 as the deadline to complete the installation of panels.

“We also replaced overhead platform sheds with new ones,” Singh said.

Karnataka seeks Railways’ nod for Suburban Network

Ministry urged to contribute 50 p.c. of Rs. 8,759-crore project. The Karantaka government had initiated a feasibility study to understand the capacity constraints of the existing railway infrastructure

Bangalore: The Karnataka government has asked the Ministry of Railways to not only approve a commuter rail system (CRS) for the city, but also be an active partner in Bangalore Suburban Railway Company Ltd.

Two days before demitting office, Chief Secretary S.V. Ranganath on October 28 wrote to Pradeep Kumar, project adviser, Railway Board, requesting the ministry to give its concurrence for participation in the project. He also urged the ministry to pick up equity in Bangalore Suburban Railway Company Ltd. and contribute 50 per cent of the project cost. The project cost is estimated to be Rs. 8,759 crore.

Mr. Ranganath said, “The Government of Karnataka has been continuously requesting the Ministry of Railways to concur to the implementation of a suburban rail system in Bangalore. The State government had initiated a feasibility study by M/s RITES to understand the capacity constraints of the existing railway infrastructure. On the basis of RITES’s report, the government has already initiated action for preparation of a detailed report for the first phase of the project, setting up of Bangalore Suburban Railway Company Ltd. and acquisition of Binny Mill’s land for the project.”
Three phases

The feasibility report had recommended implementation of the project in three phases. Phase 1 will focus on areas where demand is very high and phase 2 on the remaining places. In phase 3, the focus will be on additional halts and increasing the number of cars in each rake from nine to 15.

Mr. Ranganath said that, among other things, phase 1 would involve electrification of some stretches, setting up an automatic signalling system, investment in facilities at terminals and rolling stock. This work would be classified as phase 1A for which the estimated cost is about Rs. 950 crore.

It would cover Bangalore–Mysore, Bangalore–Bangarpet and Bangalore–Tumkur sectors.

Mr. Ranganath said an investment of Rs. 173 crore needs to be made in the Mysore and Bangarpet sectors, which includes Rs. 105 crore on five rakes of mainline electrical multiple units (MEMU) and construction of additional pit lines at Byappanahalli and Yeshwantpur stations.

The Bangalore–Tumkur sector has a double line, but it is yet to be electrified and requires an automatic signalling system. The total investment in this sector, including maintenance sheds for MEMUs, would come to Rs. 777 crore.

Once operational, Mr. Ranganath expects phase 1A to generate about six lakh trips per day on the suburban network. Once all three phases are completed, the figure would go up to about 25 lakh trips per day.

Railway construction work crippled in Manipur since Nov 12

IMPHAL, 21-Nov: The on-going railway construction works in the State has been crippled due to the ban on national projects by the All Tribal Students Union Manipur (ATSUM) since November 12.

This came to light when a team of media persons visited the railway construction sites in Tamenglong district on Tuesday.

The ATSUM had imposed a ban on national projects since November 11 midnight demanding the improvement of the educational atmosphere in the hill districts by recruiting adequate teaching and non-teaching staff and building infrastructure for schools, besides providing proper health care centres in the hill areas.

Around 10 private companies were engaged in the 98-km broad gauge railway line construction between Jiribam and Tupul in Manipur. According to Hyderabad-based Sushi Infra Private Limited project manager Sisikiran, the construction work has been stopped since the imposition of the ban.

He said, 19 tunnels out of the 34 awarded to his company, have been completed. A representative of Nayak Infrastructure Pvt Ltd, Kasudev said that all machinery are lying idle due to the ban.

Meanwhile, the 48-hour bandh called by the United Naga Council (UNC) on all the highways passing through Naga areas has hit the vehicular movement on the two National Highways connecting the State with the rest of the country today.

The bandh, which began on Tuesday midnight was called to denounce the government’s failure to hold the seventh round of tripartite talks involving UNC, State and Central Government. The last round of talks on an alternative arrangement for the Nagas in Manipur outside the State Government was held in New Delhi on August 30.

DMRC to help build Dhaka Metro Railway System

NEW DELHI: After years of receiving technical knowhow and experience, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has finally graduated to building Metros for others. Earlier this week, it inked a deal with Bangladesh government in which it will be the project consultant and help build the Dhaka Metro. It’s the firstinternational project in which DMRC is providing the entire technological and logistical base in an international project.

“The assignment is important as it will establish Delhi Metro as a consulting agency for international Metro projects,” Delhi Metro spokesperson Anuj Dayal said. Delhi Metro is also lending a helping hand in Indonesia where it is providing support in operations, maintenance and security for the Jakarta Metro project as management consultant. However, in the Dhaka project, Delhi Metro—as part of a consortium—will be undertaking the full project consultation.

“The complete scope of work for the consultant consists of all areas of project management viz. public transportation planning review, engineering study and basic design, detailed design, assistance in selecting the contractors, construction supervision, testing and commissioning, etc,” added Dayal.

In the pre-construction phase, the consultant—DMRC and other members of the consortium—will manage the project and provide engineering services. During construction, it will supervise it and provide training for operation and maintenance. In the post-construction phase, it will monitor and advise the operation and maintenance among other works, added Dayal.

“The role of DMRC in the project will be preparation of specification and manuals, taking care of safety and health aspects, traffic integration, training, making an advisory on systems, transport network planning, and framing operation and maintenance rules for Dhaka MRT-6 project,” added the spokesperson.
