Get ready for free Wi-Fi at CST, Mumbai Station

The Central Railway (CR) is in talks with telecom companies to provide free Wi-Fi to commuters at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) station through which they can access the new train enquiry system that would enable them to view the status of their local train.
A CR official, on condition of anonymity said, “When a commuter enters CST and the Wi-Fi on their phone is on, they will receive a pop-up on their screen through which they can access the Internet for free via their phones.”
“We are developing a system by which the commuter would get a pop-up to the link on our train enquiry website and give them access to information on the running of trains from CST for the next two hours,” added the official.
The new software was developed in early October this year by CR, along with Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) that develops information technology applications for Indian Railways. The software was then made mobile-friendly for easy access. Currently, passengers can view train timings on http://enquiry.indianrail.gov.in/ntes/.
Earlier, there was a glitch in this facility as commuters could not access the time according to station names, but instead had to key in the number of their train. This seemed an uphill task as commuters rarely knew the train number even if they took the train at the same time everyday.
“We have solved that problem by providing the option of station names and no matter which station you are on, the timing will be available to you,” added the official.
According to a recent survey by the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC), around 3.36 lakh passengers come to CST everyday on its suburban section.

Railways to install alarm devices on tracks'

PATNA: Concerned over the growing incidents of railway gangmen's death by trains while performing duty on tracks, Railway Board chairman Arunendra Kumar said railways would soon install alarm devices on tracks which would alert gangmen about incoming trains. He also expressed concern over the mishaps on unmanned railway gates and said their number had been brought down from 17000 to 12000 and would be reduced further.

Holding a high-level meeting with ECR GM Madhuresh Kumar, AGM Ajay Shukla, CAOs LM Jha and Anil Mittal, among other senior railway officials at Mahendru Ghat conference hall here on Friday, Arunendra took stock of all the ongoing railway projects in Bihar and Jharkhand.

According to ECR CPRO Amitabh Prabhakar, the chairman asked ECR GM and the officials concerned to complete the Digha - Sonepur rail-cum-road bridge within the stipulated time. Railways has fixed March 31, 2015, as the deadline for completion of the bridge, he said.

The chairman discussed at length passengers' safety on running trains, security measures, cleanliness work at all major and small stations, and maintaining punctuality of mail and express trains in all five divisions of the zone. He also took stock of passenger amenities available at stations under the zone.

According to sources, the chairman hoped that railways would sort out problems with the state government about commissioning of Patliputra station soon. As decided, railways would make all possible efforts to make this station functional at the earliest to cope with the increasing traffic load of Patna Junction. He was relieved to know that state government was extending full cooperation to the railways in carrying out its development plan in Bihar, sources said.

Mumbai to get first AC local only in June next year

The new deadline for the city’s first air-conditioned local train, to run on the Western Railway (WR), has now been set for June 30, 2014. The train was announced in the railway budget for the current financial year.

According to WR officials, the delay was caused by the time taken to select a new design for the rake and because technical gaps related to the electrical systems that will power the train had to be plugged. The train’s power system will be provided by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited’s Bhopal plant.

Speaking to dna, Pankaj Kumar, chief mechanical engineer, Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai, said, “This train will have a completely new design in the history of Indian Railways. It will be a 12-coach rake, broad gauge, as wide as the locals running in Mumbai and will be completely vestibuled. The furnishings will be state-of-the-art and different from those in the trains running in the city at present.”

Kumar told dna that the design for the new train has almost been finalised and the production of the rake could start in March putting it into service by June 30. The various tenders would be beginning as early as next month, said ICF officials.

In Mumbai, officials said that the fare of the train is still a matter of debate because pricing it too high or too low could be a problem. “The train should not be so crowded that we have trouble closing the doors. That would delay the trains following it,” said a WR official.

A group of officials believe that in the face of the saturation in the suburban system, an air-conditioned train isn’t a solution. “It is best that we run longer, 15-coach regular trains on the suburban system and run air-conditioned ones on the elevated corridors being planned between Churchgate and Virar and CST and Panvel,” said an official.
