Mumbai : Automatic Ticket Vending Machines (ATVMs) which were used to buy suburban local train tickets can now also be used for purchase of long distance journey tickets.
The ATVMs on Central Railway are now equipped with facilities to provide unreserved journey tickets to passengers. The ATVMs installed at stations like Dadar, Kurla, Kalyan and CST where long distance trains originate are equipped with the facilities.
“The machines will be beneficial for people travelling to places like Manmad, Goa and other such places. People going to such places buy an unreserved ticket while boarding the train,” said an official.
The counters serving long-distance passengers are extremely crowded at times. The passengers travelling in general compartments stand in queue prior to boarding a train. The ATVMs will be an alternative for such passengers. A commuter travelling outside city limits but within 150 km will get a 5 percent discount on the ticket. The commuter can either travel through long distance train or a suburban train going up to there.
Chief Public Relations Officer, Atul Rane said,
“The new ATVMs are not very popular at the moment. People believe that only local tickets can be purchased through these machines. The sales are low as people are not
aware of it but we are hoping that it will increase gradually.”

The Minister of Railways Shri Mallikarjun Kharge has condoled the passing away of Mr. Nelson Mandela. In his condolence message, Shri Kharge said:
“I am deeply saddened at the passing away of Nelson Mandela. He was a leader who fought discrimination and also gave great hope, courage and strength to the multitudes of discriminated and oppressed people across the world. During the anti-apartheid movement Nelson Mandela’s message for peace and forgiveness united them and led the nation on the path to peace and progress. Nelson Mandela was a source of inspiration for generations of young people and freedom fighters. During my visit to South Africa, I had the privilege to meet Nelson Mandela and exchanged ideas during the meeting.
The passing away of Nelson Mandela is a great loss to the South African nation and also to India as well as to the world. His life and message of courage would continue to inspire generations to come. May his soul rest in peace.”
