Shortfall in Railway earnings in April-September

Railways had earmarked Rs.68139.30 Crores as its earnings in the Budget target upto September 2013

Railways have registered a shortfall in revenue to the tune of Rs. 4121.49 crores during the first half of the current financial year from April to September, Rajya Sabha was told on Friday.

Railways had earmarked Rs. 68,139.30 crores as its earnings in the budget target upto September 2013 whereas its actual earnings were Rs. 64,017.81 crores, Minister of State for Railways Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said in a written reply to the House.

The shortfall has been contributed by both passenger and freight segments, he said.

In the passenger segment, the shortfall is primarily due to lesser number of originating passengers, reduction in advance ticket booking from 120 days to 60 days.

For the goods segment, while the loading target has been exceeded, the shortfall in earnings is due to restriction on mining activities in various parts of the country among others.

However, there is an increase of Rs. 5936 crores in revenue during this period as compared to the corresponding period the previous year.

DMRC concerned over labour unrest on Kochi Metro stretch

Kochi: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation’s head office is expected to take a call soon on the labour unrest in Kochi Metro’s fourth reach — between Ernakulam South and Pettah — following non-payment of dues to contract workers for the past two months.

DMRC sources said that mobilisation advance was not given to Era Constructions since the firm did not produce a bank guarantee. The firm is reportedly working on the issue, so that workers can be paid their dues.

DMRC might be forced to initiate action if work suffers delays due to non-payment of dues and subsequent labour unrest, since delay in carrying out works cannot be condoned, metro sources said.

Land given to Metro

In the meantime, Maharaja’s College handed over documents for 16.4 cents of land in its ground near MG Road to Kochi Metro Rail Ltd for the metro’s Maharaja’s College station on Friday.

This followed a meeting of KMRL officials with the college Principal, students and union representatives.

The present proposal excludes land in the hockey ground. Neither will trees be cut, says a KMRL press release.

Rapid MetroRail Gurgaon to be closed for 2 Hours on Sunday for Formal Launch

GURGAON (GGN): Rapid Metro will be closed for public on Sunday for two hours from 10 am to noon for its formal inauguration by Haryana Chief inister Bhupinder Singh Hooda.

The service was inaugurated ‘informally’ on November 14. At the time, the authorities had said a formal inauguration would be done by a ‘national leader’ after the assembly elections.

There were indications that the CM wanted UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi to formally inaugurate the project – India’s first privately-built metro. However, Congress’ drubbing in the elections seems to have upset the plan.

The inauguration will be held at Sikanderpur Metro Station, which connects the network with the Delhi Metro.

Meanwhile, the DLF Phase III station of Rapid Metro played host to a mini ‘Gliterarti’ on Friday as 10 city-based painters displayed their works at the venue and school children from St PBN presented the song ‘Maa Tujhe Salaam’ in support of Nirbhaya. Twenty underprivileged students of Happy School also enjoyed a ride on the train.

Trans-Harbour train services hit as track cracks

Kopar Khairane (KPHN): A minor crack that abruptly appeared on the railway track between Turbhe and Koparkhairane around 7.30 am on Friday, was spotted on time to avoid a major disaster. But it also threw the regular schedule of commuters travelling on Thane-bound trains completely out of gear. The Trans-Harbour trains heading towards Thane via Turbhe had to be halted for around 35 minutes.

Four trains were cancelled and six others were diverted till normal services resumed at 8.05 am, said G D Bharanwal, the stationmaster at Kopar Khairane Railway Station.

Bharanwal said, “A major derailment disaster was avoided, as the monitoring system, that sends out a signal to indicate a technical fault along the railway tracks, spotted the fracture on the stretch. When the system displayed the technical snag on the track, we promptly halted the trains heading towards Thane and informed the technical team which inspected the spot. Eventually, a minor fracture was spotted and rectified. But it took around 35 minutes, resulting in disruption of the railway traffic towards Thane, inconveniencing commuters as it was peak office hours.”

When asked about the reason for the fracture, a CR official said, “The railway track fracture occurs mostly due to extreme weather conditions. Probably, due to the onset of winter, a portion of the railway track contracted and expanded due to the heat generated by friction of the passing trains. This may have caused the fracture.”
