Dismantled gun found at Vijayawada Railway Station

Vijayawada Jn (BZA): An India-made, single barrel, 12-bore hunting gun was found opposite the Vijayawada Railway Station gate here on Sunday. The weapon was located by a sweeper, who during her routine work found a plastic packet, bang opposite the main gate.

According to Satyanarayanapuram Police Station SHO Prasada Rao, having located the packet the sweeper opened it and when she found some pipe-like objects, she grew suspicious and alerted a GRP constable. “Having discovered a gun, the GRP then handed it over to us,” he said.

The gun, which is normally used for hunting purpose, especially for hunting wild boars, was found in a dismantled condition.

The SHO said the make of the gun was yet to be ascertained, but according to him such guns were rampantly made and found in Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Bihar, and UP. “It cannot be called as country made, as it is not a crude one. Lingampally-Wadi Railway track Electrified

Lingampalli (LPI): With the South Central Railway (SCR) completing electrification on two major sections of Renigunta-Guntakal and Lingampalli-Wadi on the Mumbai route, it is all set to run express and passenger trains on electric traction on these routes shortly.

Renigunta to Guntakal section on the Chennai-Mumbai route is 310 km long and the Lingampalli to Wadi section on the Secunderabad-Mumbai route is 161 km long. The energisation of the last legs in these sections this week marks a giant step forward in the progressive electrification of all major routes on SCR. Running the trains on electric traction yields several operational and economic benefits. An extended network of electrified railway lines will enable seamless running of trains over long distances without any need for loco change from electric to diesel and vice-versa.

It also reduces the travel time benefiting passengers and freight customers. Due to lesser detentions, the average speed of goods trains and passenger trains increases, which in turn improves the availability of crew and offers pollution-free transportation and considerable fuel economy which is socio-economically beneficial.

Going into the details, he said that on the Renigunta-Guntakal section, the electrification was sanctioned in the year 2004-05 and works started from Renigunta and the track between Renigunta and Muddanur (180 kms) was gradually electrified in various phases during the 2008-12 period.

The electrification project for Lingampalli-Wadi section over 161 route kms (411 track kms) was sanctioned in fiscal year 2006-07. The works commenced from Lingampalli and progressed in a phased manner towards Wadi. The electrification works on Lingampalli-Vikarabad section (50 kms) and Vikarabad-Tandur section (41 kms) have been completed in phases.

CEC visit to Karnataka, hopes for Hubli-Ankola rail link revive

BANGALORE: The Supreme Court appointed Central Empowered Committee (CEC) members will be in Karnataka on Tuesday to look into various issues and primarily on the environmental impact on the proposed Hubli-Ankola railway line.

With CEC assessing the long pending 167-km rail link, the move has raised fresh hopes for the people of coastal and Malnad belt to connect with the hinterland. While the government and people have great expectation on the rail link as it is expected to boost social and economic activities, environmentalists have opposed the proposal alleging that huge tracts of forest would be destroyed.

“Around 750 acres of forest would be lost for this project, which is less compared to any other standards. But the link has huge potential in overall development of coastal and central Karnataka,” chief secretary Kaushik Mukherjee told. As the some parts of forest cover in the Malnad would be lost the CEC has to assess the situation.

Batting for the project, Mukherjee said the proposed link is important as coastal and Malnad region people don’t have a direct rail link with the hinterland. “They have to travel huge distance through train to reach hinterland. Only Bangalore-Sakleshpur train which runs to Mangalore. For people in Uttara Kannada and Udupi, Goa and Mumbai are close due to various rail links,” he said.

According to him, the proposed Hubli-Ankola rail link would boost up economic activities of central and coastal Karnataka with improvement in goods and services without affecting the environment as railway is one of the cleanest form of transport. “The link may also upgraded to electricity run one in future,” Mukherjee said.

Studies on the feasibility of the Hubli-Ankola railway link had been on for more than a decade. The foundation stone for this route was laid by former prime minister AB Vajpayee. Many politicians of the region have even made a career promising this important line to voters. In 2001, the cost of the project was estimated at Rs 998 crore. Many minor bridges and culverts have already been constructed between Kalghatgi and Hubli, before Union ministry of environment and forests halted the project following opposition from environmentalists.

Recently, a scientific team from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, took up a preliminary study of the topography of the terrain. The six-member team headed by TV Ramachandra and Subhaschandra visited areas like Karwar, Yellapur, Kiruvatti, Mastikoppa and Hubli.

The CEC will also review the resettlement and rehabilitation (R&R) of A category mines in Bellary. The SC has termed A category mines as no violations. The apex court had ordered for reopening of these mines and the iron ore produced to be e-auctioned.
