Railway police seek Chennai cops’ help to crack murder

CHENNAI: The Government Railway Police have sought the assistance of the city police in the case where a train commuter was mugged and attacked on a Tambaram railway platform on Friday night. He died in hospital the next morning.

The kind of assault on M Loganathan, employee of a shipping firm in Parry's, is considered a rare occurrence in Chennai and has shocked both residents and law-enforcers. Investigators, however, are finding it hard as all possible leads in the murder have hit a dead end.

"We need more details and have asked the city police to help in collecting personal information about Loganathan," inspector-general of police (railways) Seema Agarwal said. At least five special teams are probing the case.

Railway police teams have also gathered phone call details of Loganathan in an effort to see if he spoke to any stranger on the day of the crime. "After an analysis, we found no unusual calls were made from, or received on, his mobile on phone on Friday after he left office at 7.15pm," a police officer said.

The city police are talking to all people who knew Loganathan and are trying to ascertain the type of people he was close with in Chitlapakkam where he lived. "We don't know how such information would help the railway police, but it could give an idea about whether he had enemies in his neighbourhood," a police officer said. Earlier, forensic experts have got some clues from the murder scene and are studying them.

Loganathan normally parked his bike at the railway parking lot at Tambaram Sanatorium station and boarded a train to Parry's. An occasional drinker, he returned home latest by 9pm or 9.30pm daily, his family told police. On Friday, he did not get down at Sanatorium station and went on to Tambaram Friday. As the EMU train normally halts on the sixth or seventh platform, he was walking towards the first platform when he was attacked. He was injured with a half broken knife in the back and was found lying on platform 2.

Talking to investigators, some of his family members alleged there was a conspiracy against him by some of his colleagues in the shipping agency. They also said that Loganathan used to bring huge amounts of cash home for handing over to some people as per the advice of the company authorities.

Loganathan is survived by his wife Snehalatha and two children.

Central Railway to allocate parking space for ambulances at its stations

MUMBAI: Railway accident victims can expect faster treatment as Central Railway has decided to demarcate space for ambulance parking at each of its 76 stations in the Mumbai suburban division.

Activists and railway victims had criticized the railways for not making arrangements to ferry victims to nearest hospitals in the golden hour period. CR's move will enable victims to reach hospitals within minutes of being brought to the nearest railway station.

CR's chief public relations officer Atul Rane said, "We appeal to non-governmental organizations and corporates to avail of this free parking facility for ambulances at any of the stations. The ambulance will be allowed to attend to calls of accident victims or patients outside railway jurisdiction."

Rane said, "The ambulance operator will have to submit an application, which should have the vehicle number and phone number to the station master so that he can be contacted in an emergency."

CR will pay the operators up to Rs 750 for ferrying victims to hospitals.

Rane said, "The parking space has been selected either on the east or west of the station, depending on faster accessibility to the nearest government hospital." He said if there was more than one operator, CR may demarcate additional space.

Ambulance parking is now only available at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Kurla, Thane, Kalyan, Parel, Panvel and Ghatkopar.
