Western Railway has introduced two ticket windows of fixed denominations for Rs.5/- & Rs.10/- at Borivali and Andheri stations each with immediate effect to facilitate quick dispersal of tickets as also to save time.

WR has conducted a survey of slab wise ticket sale at few important stations so that windows may be earmarked for the convenience of the passengers especially for the slabs in which maximum number of tickets are sold at these stations. Accordingly, the analysis of the survey revealed that about two third card tickets which are sold at Andheri &Borivali stations fall under the slabs of Rs.5/- & Rs.10/- .

WR has started two windows in two shifts at these stations for the sale of the tickets of the slab of Rs.5/- & Rs.10/- each. The specialized windows will be pasted with designated color so that it can be easily identified by the passengers. Accordingly, the special window where the tickets of the slab of Rs.5/- will be sold has been colored in Red while the special window earmarked for the sale of the tickets of the slab of Rs.10/- has been colored in Yellow for easy identification by the passengers. Boards have also been put up near the entry/exit of the booking offices for the information of the passengers.

For the slab of 0-10 kms, the suburban fare is Rs.5/- and for the slab of 11-30 kms, the suburban fare is Rs.10/-. Hence issuing tickets from the earmarked windows for these slabs will considerably reduce the queues. The time for purchasing ticket will also be curtailed as it will be easier for the booking clerk to issue the ticket of fixed denomination i.e. Rs.5/- & Rs.10/- quickly. The calculation and the money exchange will also be faster as the passengers can approach these windows with fixed amount or change.

This new scheme has been implemented for a period of one month up to 10th March, 2014 on trial basis.

RAIL BUDGET - Public Private Partnership (PPP) Projects

Investment in Railways is being stepped up by partnership with the private sector. Public Private Partnership (PPP) projects related to rolling stock manufacturing units, modernisation of railway stations, multi-functional complexes, logistics parks, private freight terminal, freight train operations, liberalised wagon investment schemes, and Dedicated Freight Corridors are in the pipeline and offer excellent opportunities for private investment in the 12th Plan.

Apart from attracting private investments from domestic investors in rail sector, a proposal is under consideration of the Government to enable Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) to foster creation of world class rail infrastructure.

Rail Land Development Authority was set a challenging target of raising Rs1,000 crore in the Budget 2013-14 and they are on course and have already raised Rs937 crore so far.

Rail Budget 2014: Indian Railway service for Vaishno Devi pilgrims to start soon

Udhampur – Katra Section of Railways to Take Passengers to The Foothills of Vaishno Devi Shrine to Start Shortly

The construction on Udhampur – Katra section, which will enable lakhs of pilgrims from all over the country to reach foothills of Vaishno Devi shrine directly, has been completed and trial runs have started. Passenger services up to Katra are expected to run very shortly. The National Project of Kashmir witnessed a major landmark last June, when 11.2 km long tunnel linking Banihal with Qazigund in the valley became operational. The tunnel, which is an engineering marvel, has reduced the distance from 35 km to 17.5 km., provides an all-season means of transport for the local population and is proving a boon for the inhabitants.
