Retired railway men’s federation hold meeting

Jalandhar जालंधर (JUC): All India Retired Railway Men’s Federation (Accounts), Jalandhar, held an annual meeting here today where they discussed the strategies to get their long-pending demands fulfilled. More than 250 members participated in the meeting today. The meeting was presided over by Parkash Chand.

Speaking on the occasion Parkash Chand said, despite earnest efforts, their long-pending demands had not been fulfilled by the administration.

He said their demands are including merger of 50 per cent dearness relief with the basic pension, restoration of commuted pension after 12 years instead of 15 years, increase in fixed medical allowance to Rs 2,000 without any condition. Pensions should be declared tax free, interim relief should be granted to pensioners, five per cent upward enhancement in pension may be granted every five years after the age of 60 years as done by the state government, granting of facilities of travelling the companion in the same class to which the Railway Pensioner is entitled, allotment of office accommodation should be made in Jalandhar for meetings and official work and separate window should be provided to pensioners and staffers for reservation of seats.

Speaking about the activities of the federation DR Saini, General Secretary, said the efforts were being made to restore pensions of the widows for past three years. Meanwhile, the assurance has been given by the administration to do the same as soon as possible.


30% of Phone Nos.given by Passengers during Online Ticket Booking found to be wrong

The fact came to light during a check conducted by Western Railway in January this year to gauge the efficacy of an SMS campaign that was initiated to counter catering malpractices

In what is hindering the railways from using technology to reach out to passengers, it has been found that 30 per cent of the mobile numbers provided by passengers during online ticket booking are wrong.

The fact came to light during a check conducted by Western Railway (WR) in January this year to gauge the efficacy of an SMS campaign that was initiated to counter catering malpractices.

“We found that 30 per cent of the numbers provided by passengers were wrong. While we initially thought the numbers belonged to people who might have booked tickets on behalf of the passengers, we later found this was also not true in many cases,” said a senior railway officer.

The officer said that the administration was now investigating if there were any irregularities in the online booking systems.

In a bid to warn passengers about catering malpractices and grievance redressal mechanism, the WR began an extensive campaign titled “Know your rights” in five trains of which three are from Mumbai.

As a pilot project, mobile numbers of passengers of five trains were collected from the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Limited (IRCTC) soon after booking was made. An SMS was sent five minutes after the passenger boarded the train.

The idea was to ensure that catering-related messages were sent to passengers while they were travelling for greater impact, and not at the time of booking when the messages are unlikely to be read.

At least 10 complaints related to overcharging and unavailability of rate cards are being registered every day.

Of the three trains in Mumbai, most complaints are coming from passengers of Paschim Express and least from Avadh Express, which goes from Bandra Terminus to Muzzaffarpur junction in Bihar.

Railway officers are of the view that passengers of Avadh Express are not using technology to give a feedback on catering due to lack of literacy.

As a part of the project, an SMS stating the standard vegetarian and non-veg meal rates along with the helpline number and email id for complaints is sent to passengers during the journey.

Stickers informing passengers about the ongoing campaign have also been pasted inside coaches.


Vijayawada station in SCR Mobile App soon

HYLITES app shows time-table of trains, a helpline that connects to providers of emergency services and gives a list of hotels and hospitals.

Vijayawada विजयवाड़ा (BZA): Vijayawada railway station will figure in the South Central Railway (SCR)’s mobile application that shows live train arrival and departure (TAD) status, in about a month from now. It will then be a lot easier to know the status of trains and platform numbers on a real-time basis in three languages (English, Hindi and Telugu) by just tapping on the screen of any GPRS-enabled phone.

The mobile app named HYLITES, to be downloaded from Google Play Store, currently displays arrival and departure timings of trains at Secunderabad, Hyderabad and Kacheguda stations. Divisional Railway Manager Pradeep Kumar said, “This list is set to grow longer with the addition of Vijayawada station followed by other important stations in the next few months”.

This App was developed by Hyderabad based Software company M/s Techgene Solutions.


Chennai Metro to tap Solar power for stations

Chennai चेन्नई (MAS): In its bid to reduce the burden on the power grid, Chennai Metro Rail is exploring the option of solar power for five of its stations on its elevated corridor, according to officials of Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL).

“We may have a production capacity of 200 kilo-watt peak (kWp) in these stations that may be able to take about 10 per cent of our load. As of now, there would be provisions only in the five stations. We are considering installing solar panels on the terraces of those stations,” V. Somasundaram, chief general manager (construction), CMRL, said.

The trains of Chennai Metro Rail have regenerative braking that has the ability to recover 30-35 per cent of energy during braking.

Dr. K. Srinivas Reddy, professor, department of mechanical engineering, IIT Madras, said, “Having solar power is very effective due to their high conversion efficiency. They could consider tapping solar power along the rail tracks of the elevated corridor, too.”

There is a precedent to the use of solar power in Metro Rail projects. Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) had signed a Power Purchase Agreement with a multinational firm for installing and producing solar power in its stations, and, only in February, a 500 kWp ‘Roof Top Solar Power Plant’ was installed at Dwarka station.

Also, in 2011, United Nations (UN) certified DMRC as the first Metro Rail and rail-based system in the world to receive carbon credits for reducing green house gas emissions and for its attempt to reduce pollution levels in Delhi.


RVB Babu takes charge as New ADRM, Madurai Division

Madurai मदुरै (MDU): R.V.B. Babu, belonging to the Indian Railway Service of Signal Engineers, is the new Additional Divisional Railway Manager of Madurai Division.

He took charge from V. Ajith Kumar, who was transferred to Southern Railway, Chennai, on Tuesday.

Prior to this posting, Mr. Babu was Chief Signal and Telecommunication Engineer/Project and Planning, Southern Railway, Chennai.

He worked in various zones of Indian Railways, including South Central Railway and North East Frontier Railway, and as General Manager, RailTel Corporation.

He also worked in Railway Construction and Maintenance, and the period included his stint as Senior Divisional Signal and Telecommunication Engineer, Vijayawada, during which time he was awarded Minister of Railways Award in 2006 for an innovation in traffic improvement, a note said.
