Jamalpur railway workshop gets best workshop award

PATNA: Jamalpur railway workshop, the largest factory of Bihar, has received the award for the best workshop of Eastern Railway. Eastern Railway GM R K Gupta handed over the shield to chief works manager (CWM) Animesh Kumar Sinha at a function held in Kolkata on Saturday.

Chief mechanical engineer P K Singh was also present on the occasion. Jamalpur also bagged the shields for the best stores depot as well as for the best scrap sales in Indian railways.

Expressing his happiness, Sinha said Jamalpur railway workshop has created history by grabbing three shields. Eastern Railway has five workshops with four located in Kolkata. Jamalpur workshop has risen to an unprecedented height being the first in India to implement e-purchase and e-auction to maintain transparency in its functioning, he said.

On the repair front, the workshop surpassed the magic figure of 5,000 wagons per annum and more than 100 hopper wagons in a month, the highest in Indian railways. Repair of 90 diesel locomotives has been the best ever performance by the workshop. Incidentally, it is the only workshop of the Indian railways which covers Myanmar border to Pakistan border the PoH (periodic overhauling being carried out every eight years) of diesel locomotives by catering to NF Railway and Ludhiana shed under Ferozepur division, Sinha said.

The workshop has, of late, purchased a set of synchronized jacks for its Katra depot near Jamalpur to cater to the needs of Indian Railways. It is also the sole manufacturer in India of 140T relief cranes among the largest rail mounted cranes in the world.

The product profile of Jamalpur is the most varied one in India and has the distinction of being the only workshop in India which deals with all five types of railway rolling stock viz locomotives, wagons, cranes, tower cars and coaching bogies, the CWM said.

Jamalpur has the distinction of being the first railway workshop to have postal stamp and miniature sheet, both released by department of post, recently in its name. Apart from catering to the railways, it also caters to Concor (Container Corporation of India). The products and services of Jamalpur workshop have been appreciated at the international level during international railway equipment exhibitions, the CWM said.

The strength of employees of the workshop has increased to 10,000 yielding an impressive revenue to Indian Railways. It is one of the oldest workshops of Indian Railways, he said.

Metro smart card recharges to get costlier, minimum recharge value upped

Minimum recharge will be upped to Rs 200.The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is going to introduce several changes to its smart cards to ensure shorter queues at ticket counters.

Effective from May 21, the minimum recharge value for the DMRC smart cards will be upped to Rs 200 from Rs 100, DMRC said. “Also, the minimum recharge value for a new card will be increased to Rs 100 from Rs 50. So, a new smart card will cost Rs 150 instead of Rs 100 (Rs 50 will be refundable security deposit),” a DMRC spokesperson said.

According to DMRC, the changes are being brought about so that commuters don’t have to stand in queues at the stations and recharge their cards too often, thus reducing their travel time and also congestion at the stations.

“Most smart card users are regular travellers on the Delhi Metro. With the integration of Rapid Metro and more corridors of Phase 3, commuters are likely to cover longer distances. Thus they will need more money in their smart cards,” Anuj Dayal, CPRO (DMRC), said.

“So, the valid top-ups after May 21 for a card already in use will be in multiples of 100 and above Rs 200 (300, 400…so on),” Dayal said.

According to DMRC, the administration charges while redeeming of smart cards will also be revised from Rs 5 to Rs 20. This will be done to discourage the frequent redeeming of smart cards.

“This measure is being taken to offset the increased costs of transaction in the refund system. Almost 12,000 smart cards are redeemed every day, of which almost 1,100 are purchased and redeemed on the same day. Over 3,500 are redeemed within the same month. Once these cards are handed in, they are usually of no use because nobody wants to buy a used card, even if it is reset and fit for reuse,” Dayal said.

Dayal said almost 9 lakh smart cards had been collected for refurbishment, posing a cost to DMRC.

“So from May 21, if a commuter wishes to hand in the smart card, he or she will get back the value in the card plus Rs 30,” he said.

Integrated Security System (ISS) in three more junctions

Southern Railway is getting ready to open the Integrated Security System (ISS) in three more junctions by May-end.

The ISS comprises under-vehicle scanners, luggage scanners, parcel scanners, doorframe metal detectors and hand-held metal detectors, besides integrated surveillance cameras. Unlike other static cameras, the ISS has point-to-zoom (360-degree surveillance) cameras.

The project for installing the ISS at junctions was proposed at a cost of Rs. 25 crore. It has already been commissioned in Madurai, Tiruchi, Coimbatore, Calicut and Ernakulam. In Chennai, it is functional at Chennai Central, Chennai Egmore, Mambalam, Tambaram, Beach, Basis Bridge and Thiruvallur.

Tirunelveli, Kollam, Dindigul, Thrissur, Katpadi and Arakkonam have been equipped with Closed Circuit Television Cameras. The work on installation of the ISS is nearing completion at Mangalore, Thiruvananthapuram and Ernakulam, and it is likely to be commissioned by May-end, S. Manohar, Chief Signal and Telecom Engineer of Southern Railway, told The Hindu.

Railway to stop running of two trains from July 1

PATNA: Come July, the railways will permanently withdraw the services of two passenger trains, running since pre-Independence period via Patna Junction, on Howrah-Delhi route. The two trains, Howrah-New Delhi Lal Quila Express and Howrah-Delhi Janata Express, presently running with less number of bogies and hardly catering to the needs of common passengers.

A notification to this effect has been issued by Railway Board, informed ECR CPRO Arvind Rajak.

According to sources, railways has also announced to stop reservation of berths for these two trains from July 1.

The move has drew a lot of reactions from various quarters, including majdoor sangh and passenger association. Both bodies have requested the board to rethink over it.

Rajak said railways would soon run an express train with full load combination between Howrah and Delhi via Patna Junction in place of these two passenger trains.

Bhartiya Majdoor Sangh general secretary U K Pathak criticized the move to withdraw the services of these two oldest passenger trains, which are the cheapest mode of communications for the common people. Besides, these two trains have been linking three states West Bengal, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh and providing an easy mode of communication for the common people, he said.

The Bihar Daily Passenger Association (BDPA) has also opposed the move and urged the Board to continue services of these two trains in the larger interest of common people especially labour class who mostly prefer to travel by these two trains. Besides, the two trains have been providing alternative services for the daily commuters between Jhajha and Mughalsarai in Bihar, BDPA president B N Sahay said.
