U.S. intermodal leads North American freight traffic gains

U.S. intermodal leads North American freight traffic gains

All three major North American nations saw freight traffic gains during the week ending June 14, 2014, measured against the comparable week in 2013, the Association of American Railroads said Thursday, June 19. But U.S. intermodal volume, maintaining its longstanding momentum, was a star performer.

Up 6.3% from the same week a year ago, U.S. intermodal volume recorded its "highest week in history," AAR said. U.S. freight carload traffic also did well, up 2.2%.

Mimicking the previous week, nine of the 10 carload commodity groups AAR tracks on a weekly basis posted increases during the most recent week compared with the same week in 2013, including grain, up 22.3%, petroleum and petroleum products, up 13.2%, and metallic ores and metals, up 8.4%.

Canadian freight carload traffic for the week ending June 14 rose 12.3%, while Canadian intermodal volume advanced 8.3% compared with a year ago. Mexican freight carload traffic for the week gained 4.9%, while Mexican intermodal completed the full North American win column, up 5.7%.

Combined North American freight carload traffic for the first 24 weeks of 2014 on 13 reporting U.S., Canadian, and Mexican railroads totaled was up 2.2% when measured against the comparable 2013 period. Combined North American intermodal volume was up 5.8%.

Mumbai: Railways want to bridge the gap before bringing in new trains

The body is looking for ways to reduce the distance between the footboard of the new Bombardier rakes and the platform; this might delay in including the new rakes in regular services

You may have to wait a little more to travel on the brand new Bombardier rakes. The issue of the gap between the footboard of the rake and the platform seems to have delayed introducing the trains in regular services.

Railway Board Chairman Arunendra Kumar said they were looking to find ways to reduce the gap between the new local trains and the platform. File pic

The development has come as a result of a series of meetings between railway officials, the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) – which is the agency procuring the rakes – and Chairman of the Railway Board, Arunendra Kumar. The 72 new rakes are scheduled to be brought in as part of the R5,400-crore Mumbai Urban Transport Project-II.

Officials claim the Railway Board has asked for another round of detailed checks of the rake specifications, in terms of its height from the tracks, width and other technical details. In fact, Kumar said, “We don’t want to repeat the mistakes (referring to the height of trains) made while procuring trains under MUTP-I.

So, we will carry out necessary changes while procuring rakes under MUTP-II and conduct trial runs as well. We are examining ways to reduce the gap between the train and platform.” The height of the Siemens make of rakes procured under MUTP-I is 1,220 mm from the top of the rail.

“The problem of increasing gaps between trains and platforms came up in the last two years. We need to look at the root of the problem,” added Kumar. The problem has always been a persistent one for Mumbaikars – with senior citizens, pregnant women and physically challenged finding it difficult to board trains amid the huge crowds and the gigantic gap between the footboard and the platform and station.

This was further highlighted when Monika More, a 16-year-old girl, fell in this gap at Ghatkopar and lost both her hands. Reacting to the furore over the accident, railway authorities decided to increase the level of platforms from 760-840 mm – the height at a majority of platforms across suburban railway platforms – to 920 mm.

Pushed ahead
The height of the new Bombardier rake, which is being manufactured at Integral Coach Factory in Chennai, is around 1,230 mm. The additional procedures, albeit important, would simply delay manufacturing and introducing these trains in regular services.

Sources in MRVC said that the Research, Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) – which is the brains behind creating new technology of trains in India – too has been asked to look into the issue with the dimensions of new trains.

Sources said the technical specifications of the rakes are currently being inspected, and reports shall be submitted soon. It is quite likely that the air springs, which control the oscillation and movements of trains, might undergo changes.

However Prabhat Ranjan, chief PRO, MRVC, said, “There won’t be any changes in height or design of the rakes and there won’t be any delay. The railways are increasing the height of platforms wherever necessary”.

Rail stocks surge upto 5% as media report suggests govt planning to allow 100% FDI

MUMBAI: Shares of railways related companies gained momentum in trade following reports that the government is considering to allow 100 per cent foreign direct investment in railways to upgrade infrastructure for freight and high-speed trains.

"The commerce and industry ministry has initiated the exercise to allow 100 per cent FDI in several segments of railways, moving beyond its earlier plan to open select sectors such as high-speed train systems, dedicated freight lines built through the public-private partnership route and in certain areas of suburban rail networks," said TOI report.

Currently, there is a complete ban on any kind of FDI in railways, except mass rapid transport systems.

High-speed trains and dedicated corridors are top agenda items for the BJP government and the intention to upgrade infrastructure was officially announced by president Pranab Mukherjee in his address to the joint sitting of both Houses of Parliament.

The Railway Budget may be presented on July 9, say reports.

At 11:15 a.m.; Titagarh Wagons was up 3.58 per cent, Kalindee Rail Nirman moved 4.69 per cent higher,CEBBCO surged 4.7 per cent, Kernex Microsystems gained 1.25 per cent and Texmaco Rail & Engineering inched up 1.39 per cent.

New rail tracks laid in record time

SALEM: Thanks to advanced technology, Salem Railway Division (SRD) officials completed work that would normally take two months in just four days, replacing a 2.5km railway track on the Salem-Jolarpet route near Samalpatti railway station in record time, without disturbing passenger traffic.

"The existing track was more than 20 years old and had to be replaced to take heavier axle load," said Shubhranshu, divisional railway manager (DRM). If the work had been done manually, it would have taken a minimum of two months, resulting in heavy labour cost and disruption of train services.

A modern track replacement machine called TRT (Track Renewal Train) was deployed to replace the track. It was deployed for five hours a day, replacing 300 meters per hour. "The machine was purchased by the Southern Railway in 2007 at a cost of 25crore. The work was started on June 6 and was completed on June 9, said the DRM.
