Rail ticket discounts: Groupon India, Spice Safar cut fare by Rs 100

Under the rail ticket deal, which goes live today, Groupon India will offer 2,000 coupons every day for Rs 9. (AP)

Following the success of its ‘onion deal’ last year, eCommerce firm Groupon India has partnered Spice Safar to offer a new ‘Rail Deal’ under which consumers will get Rs 100 off on rail tickets.

Under the deal, which goes live today, Groupon India will offer 2,000 coupons every day for Rs 9. Using the coupon, consumers can book rail tickets using Spice Safar app to get Rs 100 off on a transaction.

“Last year, we had the onion deal under which we sold 23,000 kgs of onions. We wanted to bring a deal that would have the wow factor. Rail journey is something all of us have done at some point in time but there are never discounts on that,” Groupon India CEO Ankur Warikoo sad.

With today’s deal, consumers will get that benefit as well, he added.

The discount will be borne by the two firms as Railways does not offer any discounts. He, however, declined to divulge any details.

“There are offers on air travel but not on railways, which is one of the most used mode of travel in the country. We wanted to give our users a unique offer on that,” he said.

Warikoo added that he expects this deal to also take off well with students and small business owners taking the lead.

Starting today, the offer would be available for five days and each day, 2,000 coupons would be put up for purchase at 12 noon everyday.

Saket Agarwal, CEO of Spice Safar, said: “Consumers today rely on mobile apps whether it is for booking tickets or paying bills. Our association with Groupon aims to reach out to our valuable customers and make ticket booking a hassle-free experience.”

Spice Safar has 90,000 users in the country.

Last year, Groupon India announced a unique marketing strategy to offer onions at Rs 9 a kg to the first 3,000 bidders every day for seven days. The offer became so popular that it resulted in a flood of traffic that temporarily overloaded the company’s servers, crashing the site.

Launched in 2008 and publicly listed on the NYSE in 2011, Groupon offers daily deals across categories like food and beverages, wellness and travel. It has a presence in over 48 countries and has over 200 million subscribers.

“India is the fastest growing country for Groupon. We have seen business growing upwards of 100 per cent year-on-year. F&B and wellness comprise 60 per cent of our sales here,” Warikoo said.

Prepaid auto stands likely at select rail stations

The state transport department is planning to set up prepaid autorickshaw stands at some of the major railway stations. These stands will be similar to that of the prepaid taxi stands at domestic and international airport terminals. These stands are likely to come up at Borivli, Andheri, Bandra Terminus and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus.

"There is a need to set up prepaid auto stands outside railway stations to ensure the safety of passengers as well as to curb drivers fleecing travellers," said a transport official.

A couple of months ago, the state transport department had approached authorities in Central as well as Western railways with this idea. "Railway officials agreed in principle on the need to have such facilities at select railway stations," said a senior transport official.

As per the present plan, such stands will come up at Borivli, Andheri, Bandra TT and LTT.

The availability of land is the biggest challenge facing any project. And creating a prepaid autorickshaw stands isn't easy, especially outside railway stations.

"We will require dedicated space for lanes so that autorickshaws stand in a single file apart from having a cabin to make bookings," added the official. Except Bandra and LTT, there is space crunch outside other stations.

In 2011, prepaid taxi stands were set up at Bandra TT, Dadar, LTT and Mumbai Central. However, having prepaid autorickshaw stands at the international and domestic airport terminals isn't on the cards.

New TCS train to be launched in Indian Rail Budget

In the revised Indian Rail Budget, the rail minister D V Sadananda Gowda announced a new train for TCS candidates. This train will travel through all parts of the country and drop the candidates at their required posting site. The Railway Minister also told the railway fees will be 40% less than the original amount giving the engineers a respite from their hectic accounts schedule.

This program has been brought into action in collaboration with TATA which will be funding the project. The manager of TATA said, ” Since, we are hiring so many candidates from almost all parts of the country, there was utter need for this to surface. We will be providing best facilities to our employees in collaboration with the Indian Railways.”

When Faking News asked the Railway Minister about this new deal, he answered very excitingly, “This is a new beginning for India. India creates lakhs of engineers every year and majority of them go to TCS for job.”

“We owe our generation of young engineers this program, and finally ache days have come for our engineers,” he continued.

When we asked the minister about the facilities being provided in this special railway, he said, “This rail will only have general coaches with just seating capability. We have designed this rail according to the needs of Indian Engineers who rarely sleep. We will also be providing free Wi-Fi to every passenger of this train. The Pantry car will provide Maggi Cup Noodles and packet of Gold flakes as part of the meal.” He further said, “There will be liquor store also available in separate pantry car available which will also have the provision of in-house smoking. The only woes that Engineers will have to face is that there will be no girls allowed in this rail facility.”

When we asked the review of this revised Rail budget from a student placed in TCS from a local engineering college in Bangalore, he seemed pretty excited about the facilities being available in the rail, but was also disappointed as there would be no girls here too. A mechanical engineering graduate said ” This is injustice being done to us. We have already done 4 years of our engineering without any girls, now this has come as a big disappointment to us although the facilities here are pretty awesome”

Arvind Kejriwal also commented on the budget saying ” This is all corruption, hum isi ka to janch karne aaye hai, This is injustice being done to engineering graduates from IIT who do not get placed in TCS, we demand a separate train for our candidates too. We will stage dharna on the top of this train to stop this non-sense”.

Mumbai-Ahmedabad high speed rail corridor to cost Rs.63,000 crore

New Delhi, July 17 (IANS) The Indian Railways' ambition to develop a high speed rail corridor between Mumbai and Ahmedabad is estimated to cost Rs.63,000 crore.

According to a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Railways Manoj Sinha said two feasibility studies have been conducted on the corridor.

"Two studies - one a joint feasibility study, co-financed by India and Japan, and the other a business development study by French Railways (SNCF) - have been undertaken," the reply said.

"Expenditure estimated on Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Corridor is approximately Rs.63,000 crore."

The minister of state said the high speed rail project will have to be taken up through a mix of government support, multilateral funding and by alternative means of resource mobilization, including Public-Private Partnership (PPP).

The minister informed the house that for semi-high speed trains (160-200 kmph), the sections have also been identified.

"Feasibility study for semi-high speed (up to 200 kmph) between Mumbai-Delhi and Mumbai-Ahmedabad was conducted by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and report submitted in March 2014," the minister said.

Delhi-Agra, Delhi-Chandigarh, Delhi-Kanpur, Nagpur-Bilaspur, Mysore-Bangalore-Chennai, Mumbai-Goa, Mumbai-Ahmedabad, Chennai-Hyderabad and Nagpur-Secunderabad are identified as sectors where semi-high speed trains will run.

However, the minister did not divulge any time line for project completion for both the projects.

Earlier, while presenting his maiden budget, Railway Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda said that the first dedicated bullet train project will be launched on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad route.

The minister proposed an outlay of Rs.100 crore for infrastructure development for the projects.
