South Western Railways to launch Wi-Fi facility

The Railways will launch Wi-Fi facility on four popular intercity trains in the Mysore Division on a pilot basis.

This was revealed today by South Western Railway Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Rajkumar Lal at a meeting with Railway catering contractors on improving catering services at railway stations and on trains, especially with regards to hygiene and taste.

A modern base kitchen was coming up at Mysore for supplying rail passengers tasty food prepared in hygienic conditions, he stated adding that work on the subway connecting all platforms at Mysore was also progressing. Commissioning of a computerised advanced reservation centre at the post office in NR Mohalla and setting up of the ‘Yatri Ticket Sewak Kendras’ — a PPP initiative in city areas — were also on the agenda of the division, the DRM added.

Addressing the meeting convened against the backdrop of the directive by the Railways Minister stressing upon the need for improvement in Railway’s catering services, the DRM told catering contractors that inspections by officers and supervisors would be intensified and warned that major deficiencies noticed during inspections would be viewed very seriously. Besides penalty of Rs 25,000 per occasion, licence of such contractors would be revoked if improvements are not forthcoming.

Rajkumar Lal also stated that it was now mandatory for all catering contractors to obtain certificates from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). He asked the licensees to ensure staff employed by them wore the prescribed uniform and name badge.

Personal hygiene of food handlers was also very important. Disposal of garbage generated by catering units at stations/on trains, as per the comprehensive guidelines issued, was the primary responsibility of the contractors. Any deviation resulting in unhygienic atmosphere would attract harsh penal action.

Speaking on the concept of economy meals, popularly known as ‘Janatha Khana’, the DRM was of the opinion that instead of poories, an alternative like thick curd rice, could be a viable option since food habits in South India were different.

Mysore advancing towards 'digital rail division'

Mysore Division of the South-Western Railway is taking a leap towards a 'digital division' going in for latest apps and softwares.

It has also initiated simplification of procedures and rules to do away with paper work and taken up a clean-up drive to get rid of accumulated useless records and furniture.

It has taken to latest digital advances like whatsapp, web-based helpline in finance and personnel departments, and digital networking for day-to-day inter-official records. Taking advantage of Google drive, it has already opened up folders.

The division has proposed to offer wi-fi facility on four trains, including Tipu and Chamundi express operating between Mysore and Bangalore and Shimoga inter-city. A trial in the Tipu Express showed network hassles and disruption due to weak signals. Now, a solution is being worked out to offer continuous wi-fi connectivity by Airtel, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Rajkumar Lal said today revealing the advances being made towards going viral.

Simplifying rules and procedures, the number of registers maintained at different levels had been reduced substantially. Suggestions had been sent to headquarters for doing away redundant 80-90 year-old rules and procedures. Around 20-25 truck-load of useless records and furniture had been discarded after segregation, he said.

Citing an example, Lal said his morning paper work involved around 600 pages. This had been reduced and the process had been digitised, doing away with paper. Taking advantage of Whatsapp, Mysore Railway group had been opened for internal communication. Similarly, software was being developed for web-based helpline.

"Hundreds of inspection reports involved lot of paper work. Now, we have developed 'inspection software', where reports automatically go to the concerned official and action taken will be monitored," the DRM said.

"Mysore division is perhaps the first in the Indian Railways to launch such a clean-up drive and go digital. There will be a perceptive change by Ocotber 2," he added.

Lal also revealed measures initiated for building an integrated security system in the Mysore Station by installing underground and handheld scanners, adding 14 more wide-coverage cameras to existing 20 CCTV cameras and sniffer dogs before the financial year-end.

He announced introduction of Mysore-Varanasi bi-weekly special train from September 19 to connect South with North for benefitting pilgrims going to Varanasi. Introduction of Bangalore-Mangalore daily express via. Mys- ore and Yesvantpur-Shimoga town bi-weekly express, announced in the Railway Budget, would be notified shortly.

The 02681 18-coach Mysore-Varanasi premium special will run on experimental basis leaving Mysore at 6 am on Sundays and Fridays and reaching Varanasi at 1-30 am on Tuesdays and Sundays. The 02682 will depart Varanasi at 9.50 pm on Tuesdays and Sundays and arrive in Mysore at 4.45 pm on Thursdays and Tuesdays. It will have stoppages at Bangalore City, Vijayawada, Nagpur and Jabalpur. "If commuters' response is encouraging, it would be made permanent," he said.

Special arrangements were being taken up to meet Dasara traffic, including augumentation of composition of Bangalore-Mysore, Mysore-Chamarajanagar and Arsikere sections, Lal added.

Capitals of all the North-eastern states will be connected with railway services within the next five years, Union Railway Minister DV Sadananda Gowda announced on Wednesday. Currently only Guwahati, Itanagar (Naharlagun) and Agartala – the latter with a metre guage link – are on the railway map.

Interacting with the media after reviewing progress of as many as 34 ongoing railway projects, including 11 national projects, of Northeast Frontier Railway, Gowda also said that he would visit the Northeastern region once in, at present, six months to take stock of these projects.

The railway minister said the total anticipated cost of these 34 projects stood at Rs 53,522 crore, of which Rs 19,905 crore has been already spent as on March 31, 2014. These projects, he pointed out, included laying 1,757 km length of new railway lines, 2,448 km length of gauge conversion and 312 km length of track doubling. As on April 1, work of 1,545 km of new railway lines, 801 km of gauge conversion and 282 km of track doubling was pending, he informed.

Gowda also said that he had already announced a budgetary grant of Rs 5,742 crore for the Northeast projects for the current financial year, which was 54 per cent more than the previous year’s allocation. This would help expedite the ongoing projects, he added.

Expressing satisfaction with the current pace of work on these projects, Gowda said that chief ministers of the Northeastern states have been extending full cooperation in execution of these projects, apart from providing required security for the projects as well as for train services. His topmost priority was to meet the target dates of completion.

On the 4.95-km Bogibeel rail-cum-road bridge river Brahmaputra near Dibrugarh, Gowda said it would be completed by June, 2017. The project was sanctioned in 1996-97 and declared a national project in 2005-06. (ends)

TSGN rail passengers to experience 'stealth fare rises', says Labour

Mary Creagh says the government's plans for secret fare rises in the south-east will leave commuters hundreds of pounds out of pocket. Photograph: Ray Tang/Rex

Passengers on services in the new mega-franchise of Thameslink, Southern and Great Northern (TSGN) face "stealth fare rises", with some season tickets going up 18%, according to Labour.

The new franchise means First Capital Connect (FCC) and Southern services are merging. Labour said on Mondaythat where two existing franchises compete – for example, Brighton to London where FCC and Southern both operate – eliminating the cheaper fare is a condition of the new franchise. Labour said it had received confirmation that the cheaper FCC fares will be phased out, but "ministers have failed to state when and how that will happen". Under the new franchise some commuters from Brighton to London will pay 18%, or £664 a year, more for their season ticket. Day fares on other routes will rise by up to 74%. Last week some off-peak fares were axed on some Northern Rail routes.

The shadow transport secretary, Mary Creagh, said: "Just one week after George Osborne and Nick Clegg hammered their constituents in the north with huge stealth fare increases, the Tories and Lib Dems are at it again. David Cameron has allowed rail companies to hit commuters with inflation-busting fare hikes of more than 20% since 2010, and his government's plans for secret fare rises in the south-east will leave commuters hundreds of pounds out of pocket."

She added: "Labour's plan for the railways would tackle the cost-of-living crisis and drive the biggest reform of the railways since privatisation.

"Labour will cap rail fares, legislate for a public sector operator, devolve the running of regional and local services and deliver a railway which puts passengers first, not profits."
According to Labour, these fares are going up

Brighton to London season tickets will rise from £3,640 to £4,304 – up £664 (18%); a season ticket from Three Bridges (Crawley) to London will rise from £2,956 to £3,392 – up £436 (15%). An off-peak day return from Brighton to London will rise from £16.40 to £28.50 – up £12.10 (74%); from Three Bridges to London it rises from £11.30 to £17.60 – up £6.30 (56%) and an anytime day return from South Tottenham to Gatwick rises from £20.80 to £31.50 – up £10.70 (51%).

Concern over Unsafe Rail Level Crossings

HYDERABAD: Railway Board member Traffic), DP Pande has expressed concern over the rise in the number of accidents at level crossings.

He stressed upon the utmost importance of safety in train operations. Safety can not take a back seat and that railway staff should always accord top most priority for safe running of trains, he added.

Pande, who conducted a high-level regional safety review meeting of four Zonal Railways - South Central Railway (SCR), Southern Railway (SR), South Western Railway (SWR) and West Central Railways (WCR) at Rail Nilayam, directed that the field staff should quickly implement various identified solutions such as posting gatemen, providing additional warning boards, whistling boards etc. to avoid accidents at level crossings.

He called upon all the senior safety officials present at the meeting to intensity field inspections of stations and other work units and also to take necessary advance corrective action to preempt any possible mishap.

He emphasised on ensuring the maintenance of railway assets like wagons, coaches, tracks and signaling gears etc., which will prevent any chance of derailments.

He also directed the safety organisation to conduct frequent safety audits and take immediate follow-up action to rectify the deficiencies noticed.

Railway Board Adviser on Safety, Sanjeev Garg said this high level regional safety review meeting is fourth in a series of such reviews which are being undertaken by Railway Board. The earlier reviews were conducted in Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata cities.

He underscored the need for imbibing safety measures as an integral part of Railway work culture to prevent any untoward incidents from happenning. Safety in train operations is a critical pre-requisite for expanding services and growth of Railways, he cautioned. indian express

The Telangana CMO issued a statement on Wednesday in response to media reports about L & T planning to stop work on the project due to some issues with the State Government.

The Telangana Government has alleged that a deliberate attempt has been made to show the Hyderabad Metro Rail project in a bad light.

The Chief Minister’s Office issued a statement on Wednesday in response to media reports about L & T, the concessionaire for the Metro project, planning to stop works due to certain issues with the State Government.

The L & T Chief Executive Officer V. B. Gadgil called on the Chief Minister K.Chandrasekhar Rao and discussed the developments. Mr. Rao reviewed the progress of Metro rail project with L & T officials, Metro Rail project chief and Chief Secretary to Telangana Government.

The issue of reports in a section of the media, attempting to damage the interests of Telangana State came up for discussion. It was mentioned that though correspondence between L & T and HMR is a routine thing, select newspapers chose to publish the latest correspondence mischievously and in isolation.

It was felt in the review meeting that this is a deliberate attempt to project the Metro Rail project in a bad shape. The issue has however been resolved with the involvement of L & T CEO, HMR chief N.V.S.Reddy, and others

To take the project further forward and to take up the second phase of Metro Rail project, Advisor Papa Rao and Chief Secretary Rajiv Sarma will be going to Delhi to discuss with concerned officials. They are also likely to meet the officials of Government of India as well as obtain appropriate advice from acclaimed Metro Rail expert E. Sridharan.
