Ready to quit Hyderabad metro rail project if issues not resolved: L&T

HYDERABAD: L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad Ltd, the developer of the 72-km elevated metro rail here, today said it has written a letter to the Telangana government and offered to walk out of the Rs 16,000 crore-plus project as a last resort if issues concerning it are not sorted out.

However, the infrastructure major also insisted that it was keen to complete the ambitious project, saying that exchange of such letters is a "common practice" between any two parties.

Sridharan tours Vijayawada for metro rail feasibility

Metro rail projects advisor E. Sreedharan and his team at VGTM-UDA going for a site visit in Vijayawada on Saturday.

Metro rail expert E.Sreedharan today toured the Vijayawada city to initiate studies on the potential for metro rail project in the proposed new capital for Andhra Pradesh.

The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu had earlier appointed him to take up feasibility study and suggest ways to develop metro rail projects in Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam cities.

On his maiden visit to study the feasibility, he said that it would take few months to come up with concrete proposals.

He plans to visit Visakahpatnam after about 10 days to assess the ground situation.

Renowned engineer was associated with several metro rail projects, the Konkan Railways project and later with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation in its design and execution and also management. He also assisted the unified Andhra Pradesh in the feasibility work and alignment for the Hyderabad metro rail project.

He suggested that the project could be taken up in 26 km on two corridors in phase one.

Sreedharan felt that it would be appropriate for the Government to take up the project rather than any other mode and indicated it might require about Rs. 7,500 crore as per early estimates. Detailed project report would be ready by January 2015.

He said that it was not necessary to link Guntur. At a later stage the newly developed area could be connected.

China to assist in high-speed rail corridors

NEW DELHI: China will work with India to build one of the proposed high-speed train corridors. Indian Railways will identify the project to be developed with Chinese cooperation.

The China Railway Siyuan Survey and Design Group and other Chinese enterprises will conduct the feasibility study for one high-speed corridor and prepare a project report with its financing. China will also assist Indian Railways with its semi-high speed plans. It will help strengthen tracks so that the maximum speed of passenger trains can be increased to 160 kmph from 130 kmph.
To begin with, Chinese engineers will help commission the Chennai-Bangalore-Mysore corridor and help augment train for 160 kmph. After the recent successful trial on running a semi-high speed train from Delhi to Agra, Indian Railways has identified eight other corridors to run similar semi-high speed trains.
As per the action plan signed by both sides, Chinese experts will survey and design specified sections and train Indian personnel. The China Railway Eryuan Engineering Group will coordinate with the High-Speed Rail Corporation, a subsidiary Rail Vikas Nigam Limited. "A high-level team of officials will soon visit China," said a senior rail official.
The agreement signed by chairman Railway Board Arunendra Kumar and the administrator of China's National Railway Administration, Lu Dongfu, talks of redevelopment of railway stations, training in heavy-haul transportation of Indian Railway personnel and setting up of a Railway University in India. China will help redevelop two stations.
