eRail.in Launches Free API’s For Indian Railways

If there is one entity that is universally used across India by every cross-section of the society to travel, it is Indian Railways. The number of people traveling on Indian Railways on daily basis is absolutely humongous. You can make that out from the fact that even with all the upgrades, IRCTC website still crawls when people try to book tickets on it. And even after IRCTC has a capacity to book 7200 tickets per minute.

Obviously, with that kind of demand, hundreds of web and mobile apps have come up to cater to travelers needs. From PNR checking, to train timings, ticket booking probability, meal bookings, all kinds of apps are available now. However, for app developers who develop apps for anything related to Indian Railways, it is a nightmare. IRCTC, being a state run organization, does not have proper APIs and developers have to look at various different ways to gather data to incorporate it in their apps.

Fortunately, it will soon become extremely easy for them going forward. eRail.in, a site dedicated to information on Indian Railways has launched free APIs in regards to all information related to Indian Railways.

More informed online options for railway passengers

If you’re travelling by train and worried that your ticket is not yet confirmed, there are several websites and mobile applications that can check your chances of getting a confirmed ticket, besides offering other railway-related services.
Last month, Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Ltd. (IRCTC) launched the ‘IRCTC BlackBerry 10 App’, a free application that provides booking facility of tickets on phone and other services such as checking reservation status, PNR status, train schedules, routes, availability of tickets, cancellation and booking history.
Passengers’ reviews range from superlatives to scathing criticism. Some grouses are that the phone hangs, the payment page gets “stuck”, a “try again later” message appears frequently and the page times out quickly.
The “good app with lots of flaws” does not allow anyone to log in between 8 a.m. and noon.
There are two more apps (neither is officially connected with Indian Railways) providing train-related services.

Website www.trainman.in tells a passenger whether to book a waiting ticket or not.

It also allows passengers to compare waiting tickets of various trains and the chance of confirmation of a booked ticket.
It uses three colours to indicate the probability of getting a confirmed ticket. Green indicates that the ticket will get confirmed or will be RAC; yellow is the “unreliable” zone where it is difficult to predict the ticket’s final status, and red means the ticket will not get confirmed.
Mohammed Amir, its founder, said the website has an average rate of prediction accuracy of about 82 per cent, obtained by testing three lakh actual PNRs. However, he said, there never are guarantees with any prediction. They can always turn out to be false. “That is why we have prediction chances as percentages, which gives the user an estimate of how sure we are while predicting his confirmation.”
Another website www.confirmtkt.com says it can help passengers with: predicting their ticket confirmation chances if they have a waitlist ticket, subscribing for PNR confirmation notifications, searching trains between source and destination, comparing all ticket confirmation chances for trains on a single screen, and deciding on travel options.
Via email

If a passenger’s ticket is on the waiting list or RAC and needs to be notified when the ticket gets confirmed, the passenger will get an email notification.

DMRC to build a bigger, better Metro museum in Capital

Delhi is set to get a bigger and better Delhi Metro museum that will showcase its 32-year-old journey from the drawing board to a network across the National Capital Region (NCR).

At present, the Delhi Metro museum is located inside the Patel Chowk Metro station, which is popular but has space constraints. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is planning to move the museum to a permanent and dedicated spot.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) plans to have a state-of-the-art museum on the lines of the London Transport Museum. It is soon going to hire international consultants for the project.

Top up Metro card via mobile

BANGALORE: Here's some good news for frequent Metro commuters. Now, you can recharge your Metro travel cards through your smart phones. The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRC) in association with the e-governance wing of the state government is readying an app that can recharge the travel cards through mobile phones. Commuters have to just type the unique ID of the card and follow the usual mobile banking procedure for top-ups.

Around 30,000 commuters take the Metro daily on the Byappanahalli-MG Road stretch and Malleswaram-Peenya route. Of these 18,000 use smart cards. BMRC issues contactless smart cards for commuters that are available for Rs 50. The travel value is different from the cost of the card and there are options such as Stored Value Ticket (Varshik) and Trip Ticket (Sanchar). Commuters have to depend on ticket counters at stations to recharge the smart cards by cash or credit/debit cards.

Sources in the e-governance department said the move to introduce mobile recharging facility for travel cards is part of the larger plan of the state government to introduce mobile governance. Similar mobile top-ups will also be made available for BMTC and KSRTC passengers, they said.

Jaffna train service is ready to resume

The iconic Yal Devi Express from Colombo to Jaffna will resume its run on October 13, some 25 years after the link was suspended during the height of the Sri Lankan civil war.

IRCON, an Indian Railways subsidiary, restored a section of the line from Omanthai to Pallai in the Northern Province, damaged during the war, with a $800-million line of credit from India. Nearly 4,000 people, 400 of them skilled labourers from India, have been working on the project for over four years. Connecting the south to the north, the 339-km line, inaugurated in 1894, is the longest on the island.

Demands for DA Merger & Interim Relief strengthen Once again…NC JCM Staff Side emergency meeting on October 12

National Council JCM Staff Side meeting will be held on 12th October 2014 to discuss and finalise future course of action on major demands of DA Merger, Interim Relief and Date of effect of 7th CPC.

The responsibility of Trade Unions and Federations is to ensure that the demands and anticipation of the employees are fulfilled. Demands for DA Merger are being raised for more than 3 years now, ever since Dearness Allowance crossed 50% (01.01.2011).

Previously, when Dearness Allowance crossed 50% on April 1, 2004, it was added to the basic pay, during the Fifth Pay Commission. All over the country, employees are demanding that DA be added to the basic pay once again in 6th CPC which is crossed 50%. Sensing this, all the Central Government Employees Federations and Unions began negotiating with the Government in various levels. When the Centre refused, a number of protests were held across the nation. Confederation successfully conducted a 2-day long total strike including for this demand.

Despite the fact that the demand occupied prominent position in a number of protests, there was an expectation that decision in this regard would be made during the final cabinet meeting of the previous government, which was held on February 28, 2014. Most of the Employees Federations had withdrawn their protests, trusting the assurance of the then government. But when no such announcement was made, there was an immense sense of disappointment.

Then there were expectations that the new government at the Centre would fulfil this demand. There are no signs of the important demands being granted.

In order to draw the attention of the Government to their demands, the National Council JCM (Staff Side) is going to meet on 12.10.2014. The meeting assumes prominence because all the National Council JCM Staff Side members are going to participate in it. Merger of Dearness Allowance, Payment of Interim Relief, and Declaration of 01.01.2014 as the date of effect of the recommendations of the 7th CPC are the important demands of the meeting. Plan of action will also be drawn on how to make the Centre accept these demands.
