SCR Records Impressive Growth in Freight (Goods) Operations During the First Half of Current Financial Year ; Surpasses Railway Board’s Targets in Freight Loading and Earnings

South Central Railway has recorded an outstanding performance in freight (goods) operations during the current financial year 2014-15 so far. The Zone has registered an impressive growth in its freight activity in the first six months period from April to September, 2014, on the strength of increased loading of freight traffic, optimal utilization of Rolling Stock  (wagons / locos) and streamlined operational management practices for improved running of goods trains etc. It resulted in a remarkable surge in SCR’s revenue earnings and traffic volume this fiscal so far.
The incremental growth in physical freight loading i.e. the additional tonnage of goods loaded in wagons this year vis-à-vis the same period of last year on SCR, stands out as one of the top performances amongst all the Zones on Indian Railways. During the month of Sept.2014 SCR recorded the highest incremental loading in terms of rakes in BOX N (open) wagons loading on Indian Railways. Loading in this stream improved by 11 rakes to 43 rakes on an average per day compared to 32 rakes last year during the same period.
The highlights of SCR’s freight operations performance are detailed below:

1.Originating Freight Revenue Earnings:
The originating revenue earnings from freight traffic during the period from April till September, 2014 grew significantly by 16% to a record high of Rs 3966 Crs. It signifies an incremental raise of Rs 536 Crs over the previous financial year’s earnings of Rs 3430 Crs for the same period.

2.Originating Freight Loading:
The cumulative originating freight loading of the Zone from April till September. 2014 has risen by 7%, duly surpassing the Railway Board’s target too. The Zone has achieved                    55.7 Million Tonnes (MT) of originating freight loading during this period as against the loading target of 54.8 MT set by Railway Board. It is also higher by 3.6 MT over the previous year’s loading of 52.1 MT, registered during the same period.

3.Major Commodities Loaded on SCR:

a)Coal : Coal, which accounts for the largest chunk of freight loading on SCR registered a cumulative loading of29.9 MT from April till September, 2014, an increase of 2.2 MT over the previous year’s loading of 27.7 MT, with a growth rate of 8%.

b)Cement : SCR loaded 14.8 MT of Cement from April till September, 2014, showing an increase of 1.1 MT over the loading of 13.7 MT done during the corresponding period of the previous fiscal, registering a growth of 8%.

c)Food grains with 3 MTs of loading and fertilizers with 2.1 MTs of loading constitute other major commodities loaded on the Zone during April to Sept.2014.
4.Performance Growth Factors:
Some of the major factors which contributed to the record performance in freight sector on SCR include -
a)Loading at Krishnapatnam Port:- The freight loading at Krishnapatnam Port recorded a robust growth of 35% during 1st half of the current fiscal from April to September 2014, registering 9.6 MT loading as compared to 7.1 MT for the same period in the last financial year. Coal, imported Iron Ore and Fertilizers are the commodities mainly dealt through rail at this Port. Krishnapatnam Port has recorded  highest single day loading of 22 rakes on 26/09/2014 surpassing previous best of 21 rakes in August, 2014.

b)Coal Loading from Singareni Collieries:- Loading of coal from Singareni Collieries stood at 16.2 MT for the period April- September, 2014, an increase of  18% over the previous financial year’s performance  of 13.7 MT during the same period.

c)New Commodity of Freight:- Intensive marketing efforts of SCR led to the generation of a new stream of freight traffic i.e. imported Iron Ore from Krishnapatnam Port to M/s JSWT (Jindal Steel). During the months from July to September, 2014, 415 rakes (92 in July, 160 in August and 163 rakes in Sep’14) of imported Iron Ore were loaded carrying around 1.64 MT, which generate revenue earnings of Rs 148 Cr.

d)Optimal Utilization of Rolling Stock & Innovative Operational Management:-

i.The BOX N (open wagon with air brake) rake loading during April-September, 2014 has been 41.2 rakes on an average per day as compared to 38.6 rakes per day during the same period of last year, a 7 % growth.

ii.The combined interchange of trains, which denotes the level of the number of goods trains run across SCR’s system, during the period from April to September, 2014 has been 219 trains per day as compared to 203 trains per day during the same period last year, an 8% growth.

iii.The running of goods trains has been closely monitored at various levels which led to reduced detention to the wagons and increased mobility. The wagon turn round is maintained at 2.7 days.
