Passengers are facing problems due to LHB Coaches

Coimbatore-Chennai train gets its first state-of-the-art coaches

The city is all set to receive the first ever modern railway coaches. The Southern Railway has allotted to Shatabadi Express (Coimbatore-Chennai-Coimbatore) eight new LHB (Linke Holfman Bush) coaches, which offered more safety and security besides comfort to passengers.

According to railway sources, these coaches, manufactured at Rail Coach Factory’s (RCF) Kapurthala plant, are anti-telescopic, meaning they will not topple or coil over one another during a collision or derailment. While conventional coaches have a noise level of 100 decibels, LHB coaches generate only 60 decibels.

These coaches are designed to run at 160 km-per-hour speed and have higher passenger capacity. Air conditioning is controlled by a microprocessor, giving passengers more comfort as the cooling will be much more effective and factor in the seasonal variation. The disc brake system of the LHB rakes will ensure an effective application of brakes in reduced response time and space, the railway sources say.

The coaches are made of stainless steel and the interiors of aluminium alloy, which make them lighter in weight compared to conventional coaches.

A railway official, seeking anonymity, said that most of the present coaches in Shatabadi Express were earlier used by the Rajdhani Express in the North and were past their utility period of 25 years. Some of them were even condemned but were passed on to Shatabadi Express.

Welcoming this move, R. Raveendran, secretary of the Residents Awareness Association of Coimbatore (RAAC), said that the conventional coaches had several problems.

“It was often ridden with insects, damaged chairs and trays.”

This Shatabadi Express was converted from the earlier Duronto Express, which was a non-stop service from Coimbatore to Chennai.

This express had three halts now at Tirupur, Erode, and Salem.

Number of coaches

While the only point of concern was that the number of coaches had been reduced by two to eight, he expressed the hope that it would soon be increased to ten.

Now, such coaches are present only in two trains that passed through Coimbatore, namely the Yesvantpur - Kochuveli - Yesvantpur Weekly AC Express (Train No 16561/62) and 22630/22629 Tirunelveli - Dadar - Tirunelveli Weekly Express that departs from Tirunelveli on Wednesdays and from Dadar on Fridays.

Prepaid autorickshaw counter at Mangalore Junction stalled

Though the process of operationalising a prepaid autorickshaw counter at the Mangalore Junction Railway Station has commenced, the district administration is yet to finalise the counter operator.

The district administration had invited tenders from interested parties to operate the counter by collecting Re. 1 service charge from passengers. Regional Transport Officer, Dakshina Kannada, Afzal Ahmed Khan, said the RTA had received a few quotations from individuals as well as associations.

However, owing to long holidays, the process of evaluating the quotations and finalising the operator was delayed, Mr. Khan said. Also, the district administration would like to send the proposal to the government to finalise the contract and get a notification issued, he said. As such, the process might take more time, Mr. Khan said.

Since Mangalore Junction is located off the highway, one has to depend either on own or hired vehicles to travel between the city and the station. The station witnesses heavy footfalls. Though the process began about two-and-a-half years ago, the station recently got a kiosk to operate the counter. The Re. 1 service charge is still an issue as not many are willing to operate the counter at this rate.

London’s new ‘driverless’ Tube trains slammed by unions

Images of the new tube’s futuristic design, which is set to feature walk through carriages and air conditioning, were unveiled by the Mayor on Thursday.

The modernized tubes are expected to begin servicing Londoners in 2022. While they have been designed to operate on a purely automated basis, TfL say they would initially be manned by drivers.

When TfL’s older tube fleet has been entirely replaced by their modern counterparts, the newly designed trains will begin running on a driverless basis with a staff member on board.

Hungry passengers in stranded trains protest as Konkan Railway paralysis lasts 32 hours

MUMBAI: It took more than 32 hours to restore services on the Konkan Railway after Tuesday's derailment, resulting in a nightmarish experience for passengers on board trains stuck on the route. Many complained about absence of basic arrangements by the railways.

The Konkan Railway said arrangements were made for free biscuits and meals, but people travelling by the Konkan Kanya Express claimed they got no relief for hours.

"There was no water in toilets and those travelling in AC coaches sweated in the unbearable heat as the train was stuck from 7.45 am till 2.30 pm at Khed station," Abhijit Ghosh, a Konkan Kanya passenger who had boarded the train at CST, said.

Sabarmati station upgrade underway

AHMEDABAD: The Indian Railways has taken the project to upgrade Sabarmati railway station, which is proposed to be an alternative to Kalupur railway station. The railways have already invited tenders for adding two feeder lanes and an additional platform at the station.

Officials said that with railway authorities granting permission to convert Ahmedabad-Mehsana metre-gauge to broad gauge, Ahmedabad railway authorities have decided to add two feeder lanes and one platform at Sabarmati. This will increase accommodation of trains at the station. Officials said that they have plans for trains originating from other parts of the country and heading to North or even to Saurashtra to bypass Kalupur station.

Officials said that they plan to provide a short halt of two minutes to long distance trains at Maninagar and then have the main halt at Sabarmati station. This will mean more trains originating from the city. Kalupur station is saturated and presently important trains like Karnavati Express wait in the yard for nearly 20 minutes being brought to a platform.

Anil Ambani wields broom in Churchgate

MUMBAI: Top industrialist and chairman of the Reliance Group, Anil Ambani, on Wednesday took a broom in his hand to clean the Churchgate area as part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ambitious campaign to clean up the country.

The campaign, known as Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan, was launched on October 2.

Ambani also invited Amitabh Bacchan, Shobha De, Shekhar Gupta, Prasoon Joshi, Mary Kom, Sania Mirza, Hrithik Roshan, Nagarjuna and the Runners Club of India to take the cleanliness movement forward.
Launching the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan last week, Modi had named Ambani, cricket star Sachin Tendulkar, film stars Salman Khan, Priyanka Chopra and Kamal Hassan, yoga guru Baba Ramdev, Congress politician Shashi Tharoor, Goa governor Mridula Sinha and the team of television serial Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah to take his dream initiative forward.

The prime minister had asked them to nominate nine more people to join the campaign in the hope of triggering a chain reaction.

Modi complimented Ambani on Twitter: "Wonderful effort by Anil Ambani, who cleaned the area around Churchgate Station in Mumbai along with his friends."

He hoped people invited by Ambani to join the Swachh Bharat Mission would inspire others to do the same.

MRVC eagerly awaiting results

The Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC), the infrastructure-planning body of Mumbai suburban locals trains, is awaiting the results of the state Assembly polls for the sake of the vital Virar-Vasai-Panvel corridor, as the government under former chief minister Prithviraj Chavan was opposed to the project. Mr Chavan and his advisors wanted to push a multi-modal corridor with Metro and a new road in the section instead.

MRVC, which had submitted the initial proposal to the state government twice — with the most recent submission in January of this year, was told that the state would prefer the Metro transport mode instead. A MRVC official, on condition of anonymity, said, “We told the state government in our meetings that we already had one train running from Virar to Panvel via Virar and that we gave them a rough proposal in which our engineers had charted out the railway line. But they told us that the government wants to push the Metro in that section as well as a road instead.”

MRVC is of the opinion that the delay would have been justified had the state government got a proposal for the Metro and the road from another body, but no such proposal other than MRVC’s exists. “They were still convincing private players to think about building a Metro in this corridor. So basically neither MRVC nor any other firm is building anything to connect these important suburbs,” he said.

After the results are out, the MRVC officials will present the proposal for the third time to convince the new state government about the need for the project. “Hopefully the new government might be positive about the project,” said the official.

Rlys to set up incubation centre in Darjeeling

In line with the announcement in its budget on technological innovation to improve efficiency and performance, Indian Railways plans to set up a research-cum-incubation centre in Darjeeling. The centre would aid the national transporter to implement new ideas through information technology, according to senior officials.

The centre, expected to be operational by the end of this year, will have the capacity to train 50 people in a single batch. To be set up in partnership with the Centre for Railway Information Systems, the Railways plans to join hands with leading IT companies such as Wipro and IBM. ”About Rs 3.45 crore has been sanctioned for the project and infrastructure like buildings and hostels is almost ready. We are in the process of deciding the structural curriculum,” said a senior official with the Railway Board.

The Railways is also fine-tuning the screening criteria for employees to be selected for the programme. The proposed centre in Darjeeling is separate from the four colleges that are supposed to be set up under the Railway University. “This centre will act as a nodal for innovative ideas and modernisation of the Railways. We want to promote new thinking for changing the working style and use modern information technology for various operations,” said an official.

The Railways had recently introduced online booking for freight services. It also decided that about half of Tatkal tickets would be sold online through premium pricing.

Railway Minister Sadananda Gowda had announced a series of measures in the last budget, including adoption of modern accounting methods, setting up Railway University and incubation centres to promote use of information technology in the Indian Railways, which still works under the century-old British system.

After Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to China and Japan, ideas from these countries are also being adopted. Railway officials said such incubation or research centres are common among various international railway systems. The Railways currently has Research Design and Standards Organization, whose research primarily focuses on mechanical and signalling aspects of Railway operations. The Darjeeling research centre will be a first-of-its-kind focusing on information technology.
