Indian railways launches official Android app for e-ticketing

New Delhi: With an eye on the growing usage of mobile applications, Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has launched its official Android app 'IRCTC Connect' that would allows passengers to book railway tickets.

The app can be used for various other services like checking reservation status, train schedules, train routes, ticket availability, ticket cancellation, booking history and recent history among others.

The App is available for free download on Google Play India. The 12MB IRCTC Connect is compatible on phones running Android 4.1 and above.

The IRCTC service website says, "The wait is over!! You deserved, we developed."

"Enjoy the never before experience just by swipe and shuffle, select and book", it has added.

It may be recalled that in the month of August IRCTC had launched a new application to book tickets for BlackBerry smartphone users.

There are about 31 crore reserve tickets being booked in a year out of which 55 percent tickets are sold through windows. While 37 percent tickets are booked online, eight percent are being booked by ticketing agents.

Modi makes Indian railways an attractive investment destination

New Delhi: Indian Railways has become an attractive investment destination, especially with the Narendra Modi government pitching for modernisation and upgradation of one of the largest railway networks in the world with high-speed trains and modern stations with world-class amenities.

The prime minister`s recent interaction with the leaders of Japan and China has led to both inking agreements to invest in India`s mammoth railways network by way of high-speed trains and modernising stations. Teams from both Japan and China will be visiting India soon to study specific sectors before finalising agreements, said an official.

Japan has offered to provide financial, technical and operational support to India for introducing its bullet trains, called Shinkansen, on the Ahmedabad-Mumbai route.

The Japan International Cooperation Agency is conducting a feasibility study on the 530-km-long Mumbai-Ahmedabad route for running a bullet train at a speed of over 250 km an hour. The study will be completed by July 2015, Indian Railways spokesperson Anil K. Saxena told IANS.

The corridor with around seven stations is expected to cost Rs.60,000 crore (about $1,000) over six years, at Rs.10,000 crore a year.

"The safety angle of the bullet train project on the corridor will be studied," Saxena added.

Once completed, a bullet train would take around 3-4 hours to reach Ahmedabad, compared to the eight hours it takes now by express train.

Japan has also evinced interest in financing semi-high speed trains in India, which travel at speeds up to 200 kmph, while bullet trains run at speeds of over 250 kmph.

A Japanese team would conduct a study for semi-high speed and bullet train on the Mumbai-Delhi corridor, the official added.

With China, the agreements inked are for increasing the speed of trains on the existing rail network, modernising stations and enhancing mutual cooperation in the sector.

Though Beijing was pushing for its bullet trains, New Delhi has decided to go for semi-high speed trains on the Chennai-Bangalore-Mysore stretch. The speed on this stretch is proposed to be raised to 160 kmph. A study would be conducted by the Chinese side before the project is inked.

With regard to China`s eagerness to introduce its bullet trains, the spokesperson said it has been asked to identify the corridors and also conduct a study on the safety aspect.

Around 10 stations have been identified for modernisation. These would be made into world-class stations. Delhi and Mumbai stations are to be initially upgraded and Chinese help would be sought for this.

Modi, during his US visit, pitched for investment in Indian Railways. Two major American firms - Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD) and General Electric - have been shortlisted for the manufacture of heavy locomotive engines in PPP (public-private partnership) mode in Bihar.

Indian Railways, the largest network in Asia, runs 11,000 trains every day, of which 7,000 are passenger trains. It ferries over 13 million passengers every day on its 63,028-km tracks.

Railways to install warning system to stop high-speed trains in 20 secs

BAREILLY: With the introduction of high speed trains on the cards, Indian Railways has decided to acquire the sophisticated "early warning system" to alert both the driver and staff at the nearest railway station about an impending danger of an accident. This way the railways hopes to do way with human error as cause of an accident.

The warning system would be imported from England and comprise state of art facilities and technique to trigger an early warning alarm in case there is any apprehension of an accident on the tracks on which a high speed train is moving, say railway officials.

In a move to prevent accidents, Indian Railways is all set to start a new chapter by introducing Train Protection and Warning System (TPWS) which is based on European Train Control System (ETCS) — a proven and well known protection technology used in several countries across the globe for prevention of accidents caused due to human errors either by over shooting a signal or failing to adhere to speed limit directions on the tracks.

The TPWS with features like signal aspects, maximum permissible speed for a particular section of track, inter-signal distance and several others, would be taken into account and reduce chances of drivers overshooting signals, reducing chances of accidents on tracks.

As per railway officials, system would also give early warning to driver (loco pilot) of the train soon after detection of rail fractures, shooting red signals and over-speeding. If prior warning is ignored for some reason, the system will automatically stop the train within 20 seconds, thereby not only saving lives of passengers on board but also help in protecting railway property.

As per reports, several high traffic rail routes, including accident-prone will be covered in first phase. Some of the routes to be equipped with the TPWS are Delhi- Mumbai, Ahmadabad-Mumbai, Jammu Tawi, Punjab, Dehradun via Bareilly to Bihar and a few other routes in southern India.

Talking to TOI, public relation officer, Izzatnagar division, Rajendra Singh said, "Soon TPWS will be installed in railway engines for which engineers will be imparted training soon. The system is highly effective and will take a mere 20 seconds to stop a train running at speeds of 100 km and above."

Railway Minister Inaugurates the 59th Annual Railway National Awards Function-2014 at Bangalore

Railway Minister Inaugurates the 59th Annual Railway National Awards Function-2014 at Bangalore

Bangalore: The Minister of Railways, Shri D.V.Sadananda Gowda inaugurated the 59th Annual Railway National Awards Function - 2014 in Bangalore today. Also present among others on the occasion were Shri Arunendra Kumar, Chairman, Railway Board, Shri V.K.Gupta, Member Engineering, Shri Alok Johri, Member Mechanical, Shri A.K.Mital, Member Staff, Shri P.C.Gajbhiye, Secretary, Railway Board and Shri P.K.Saxena, General Manger, South Western Railway. Shri Gowda gave away National Awards for Outstanding Service – 2014 to a total number of 132 railway officers/staff from all over the country. The prestigious Govind Vallabh Pant Shield for the best overall performance amongst the best zonal railways and production units was bagged by West Central Railway (headquartered at Jabalpur). Following is the text of the speech of the railway Minister:- “I wish this function gives all our railwaymen an encouragement to work hard, work efficiently and work innovatively to bring smiles on the faces of our travelling passengers and our freight customers. In our rich and eventful journey of 161 long years, we have covered many significant milestones. The old has given way to the new and we have embarked on the path of modernizing every aspect of Railway operations. We are working on high speed rail corridors, on new designs of more efficient wagons, on the most efficient anti- collision devices like TCAS and TPWS, on new methods for ultrasonic detection of rail fracture to avoid derailments. We are progressing on dedicated freight corridor aimed at transforming goods movement in the country. We run superfast trains like Shatabdi and Rajdhani and are taking determined stride towards running High Speed bullet trains. We can boast of Engineering marvels like Jammu & Kashmir rail link and railway projects in North Eastern region; Computerized passenger reservation system and ticket booking through internet is getting a boost. In fact all aspects of Railway working, be it improvement in productivity, economy in expenditure, increasing railway earnings, curbing ticketless travel, improving operations, maintaining and improving the life of assets and aspects of security/safety, developing world class stations, completion of crucial projects – right from policies to processes and procedures have seen major initiatives and innovations these days. Our new government at the centre got a thundering mandate from the people of India and under the leadership of our Prime Minister, Sri Narendra Modi ji, we have vowed to live up to their expectations. Indian Railways run more than 12000 passenger carrying trains and more than more than 7000 freight trains every day. What are required are not a few changes here and there but holistic planning and comprehensive measures that shall enable the Indian Railways to match the best in the world. We have to work in this direction on a day to day basis. I am happy to share with you that many of the budget announcements are in various stages of implementation and remaining will have to be taken up within a month. Implementation of the budget announcements is strictly monitored. The performance of the Railways on almost all the parameters has been steadily improving as you can gauge from the improvements in efficiency parameters in the last 4 months. Indian Railways is making efforts to evolve new methods of resource mobilization. Recently during the talks of Hon’ble Prime Minister with Japan and China we have identified some mutual areas of cooperation with these two countries. One of the major initiatives of our government is to permit foreign direct investment (FDI) in our railway sector to bring much needed investment in the railway infrastructure especially the big ticket projects like High speed rail corridor among others. Permitting FDI will facilitate foreign investors to compete for such mega projects, either on their own or by joining hands with domestic investors. This in no way leads to privatization of existing Indian Railways Network or its core activities. At the cost of repetition, it is made clear that the existing Indian Railways Network, its operations and its core activities will remain with the Indian Railways only and not open for privatization. This will also not affect the strategic role played by Railways in the national interest as well as its social obligations in any way. In order to provide more hassle-free services to railway users, Indian Railways have launched new IT initiatives/applications developed by CRIS. It also meets Hon’ble Prime Minister’s dream project of Digital India. Next Generation e-ticketing (NGeT), Freight E-Demand system, Freight E-Diversion system, Go India Smart card, Train Enquiry Mobile App are few of the initiatives taken up by Indian Railways in the past 4 months. We have taken a number of initiatives in the field of catering which is one of the major areas of complaints by the passengers. We have so far imposed exemplary penalties on 12 contractors for their lapses in providing quality food. We have strengthened our catering complaint no. 1800-111- 321. We have introduced on pilot basis precooked foods and e catering systems. We are planning a third party audit of the catering services so as to ensure improvement. I am sure all my railwaymen will bring in a remarkable change in the Q & Q of the food we serve for our customers. My dear friends we must realize that it is not just private sector which treats customer as king but Indian Railways must resolve today that we are no less to private sector in keeping the customers’ interest first. In the fast transforming world of web based communication through social media, Railways has ensured its presence on social media platforms by launching You tube, Facebook and Twitter. This would help us to directly connect with the public. On October 2nd, Indian Railways launched the biggest ever cleanliness campaign all over the country in line with the Union government’s Swachh Bharat campaign. The entire railway family rose to the occasion and performed ShramDan for ensuring cleanliness. Cleanliness should become part of our ethos and values and should be a continuous feature of our functioning. The railway staff and the railway users together can make a big difference in the field of cleanliness and can change the face of the nation. We have allocated 40 per cent more budget for cleanliness this and if need be we would also increase it. We would also set up one dedicated dept for House Keeping with the presence from the level of stations to Board so that this business is taken seriously and those manning the dept become accountable.”

Rail overbridge projects to get speedy clearance soon

Railway board is developing a portal which will upload design templates for bridges so that cos could follow a standard model.

NEW DELHI: The Narendra Modiled government is getting ministries and departments to work together to get things moving even though big-bang infrastructure initiatives have remained elusive. The often feuding railways and highways ministries, for instance, have decided to develop templates for railway overbridges, differences have stalled these projects, and waive off maintenance charges to expedite their completion.

For starters, the road developers struggling to get the designs of the rail overbridges would be able to get faster approvals. The Railway Board is developing a web portal which will upload generic design templates for such bridges so that companies can follow a standard model. "It would take anywhere between six to eight months to get a ROB (rail overbridge) cleared. And even after the clearance, the design would be questioned causing a delay of a few more months. This needs to be implemented soon," said M Murali, director general of the National Highway Builders' Federation.

There are over 180 such bridges pending government approval, according to the federation's data, which have stalled the projects. The National Highways Authority is providing its feedback to the railway board on these designs.

Last month, the rail ministry had moved the approvals for rail over bridges online.

The Railway Board has also decided to waive off maintenance charges on the rail over bridges in public private partnership projects.

"The move will improve the viability of the projects. It counts much more now since the lending from banks has slowed down significantly in the highways sector," a senior NHAI member who did not wish to be named said.

The maintenance charges, at 30 per cent of the cost of the bridge, are an upfront payment made to the railways. For PPP projects, this has been an extra cost since responsibility of maintenance is with the concessionaire.

The gesture of this waiver will be reciprocated by the highway ministry in case of charges on railway work on the NHAI land.

Besides, the issue of safety clearances from the railways which at times take even two to three years to procure is being dealt with by the two ministries.

The Commissioner of Railway Safety is in the process of drafting the broad guidelines on safety parameters and the required deadlines to meet the same. "There's no uniform rule followed by each railway zone in giving safety clearances. Delays are bound to happen then," a senior government official said. Close to 189 highway projects involving investments of around Rs. 1,80,000 crore had got stuck due to problems of land acquisition, delays in forest and environment clearances, non-transfer of defence land and hurdles in rail overbridges.

मिलकर रोकेंगे रेलवे में निजीकरण

Block consisting of railway privatization
10/12/2014 3:36:00 AM
