Normalcy Restored in Train Services on South Central Railway

Regular train services, especially towards Visakhapatnam which have been affected due to cyclone ‘Hudhud’ and the resultant breaches to track in Vijayawada Division, have been normalized on South Central Railway. Almost all the train services originating on SCR towards Visakhapatnam and Bhubaneshwar have been operated normally today. Long distance express trains towards destinations in Eastern part (Bhubaneshwar, Howrah and beyond), passing through SCR have been run on their scheduled normal route only i.e. via Visakhapatnam.

However, in view of some of the diverted trains running late and the dislocation that occurred in the last few days, some express trains may be run to rescheduled timings as per need.

Rail to be main public transport backbone

BENTONG, Oct 14: The Transport Ministry will review the overall rail structure plan, including the East Coast Rail Link, to improve its efficiency in the future.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said this is also a move towards making rail transport an effective mode of public transportation to replace land and air travel by 2020.

“The existing railway routes from Mentakab and Gua Musang would be reviewed and upgraded because many parts are damaged due to unsatisfactory maintenance, resulting in the trains not being able to travel fast.

“The new routes will connect high density areas and pass through large towns like Kuantan and Kuala Terengganu.”

The East Coast Economic Region Development Council (ECERDC) had previously conducted a detailed study of a new network for the East Coast train route, connecting Kuala Lumpur to Kota Bharu, covering a distance of 620km, at a cost of about RM30 billion.

In Budget 2015, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak announced that RM150 million would be allocated to upgrade railway tracks from Gemas to Gua Musang, Kelantan.

He said with the new network, it would transform the railway into an alternative mode of transportation to overcome traffic congestion that frequently occurs at the East Coast Highway, especially during festive seasons.

Meanwhile, he said, the double-tracking from Ipoh to Padang Besar and Ipoh to Gemas had been completed while Gemas to Johor Baru is expected to be completed by end of the year.

“The track from Johor Baru and Padang Besar is very important and we will ensure it would be completed by year end because it has been delayed for a long time.”

Liow said the track is scheduled to be fully operational by next year.
