App review: IRCTC Connect is pleasant to use but don't expect Tatkal tickets

If you want to book a ticket with Indian railways from your home, the only option for you is -- or rather was -- its website run by IRCTC. Unfortunately, this is also one of the worst ways to book a ticket. The e-ticket website is a joke. Server errors, slow speed, website breakdown under heavy traffic in the early hours are among many issues faced by its users.

For long, Indian people are asking for a mobile app that can help them book rail tickets on the go. The hope is that the app wouldn't have the issues that plague the IRCTC website. Well, a few days ago IRCTC came out with its official Indian Railway app. Called IRCTC Connect, it is available for Android phones running version 4.1 or above. We give it a spin and tell you if it is any improvement over the website.

The application on the Play Store has received mostly positive reviews. But it is no surprise. The app is mostly user-friendly. The keyword here is -- mostly. Because once you move beyond the pretty interface, you start running into a few issues.

Let's talk about the good things first. The IRCTC Connect application has been built keeping ease of use in mind. It is a light app with pleasant and simple user interface. The ticket booking process is actually simple comparing to the website. The app takes you straight to the New Booking page, where you can select stations, select a train from the list and book the ticket. The whole process takes place on the same screen, so there is no lag which users often face when an app opens a new page at each click.

The user interface is simple. Even a first time user will feel comfortable. But that is where we find the major issue. Logging into the app doesn't always work. It may take a user few tries before he or she can log into the app.

In fact, there are many things that IRCTC has overlooked or are missing. For example, you can log into the app using your existing IRCTC account or create a new one but if you happen to forget the password, you will have to go to the website because in the app there is no way to retrieve the password.

Another problem arises when you are logged in and want to go through your booking history. Although there is a section named "Booking History", it hasn't been synced with the website. So your travel history won't show on the application. The same thing goes with the "Cancel Ticket" and "My Bookings". It won't show details under any of the said sections unless you have booked a ticket from the application itself, not from the website. In our opinion this is a major issue.

Also, you cannot book a ticket from the app between 8am and 12pm, which is ironic as why would a user book a ticket from the app if he had access to his laptop? It is a big problem if you have to book a Tatkal ticket because by the time you can book a ticket from the app, all the Tatkal seats would have already been taken.

The application is also riddled with unwanted ads. Fortunately, they only look and don't interfere with the functionality of the app.

So, what is the takeaway? To summarise, we can say that the IRCTC Connect is an appreciable step by the IRCTC. It has the potential to precede the website's popularity for booking tickets. But it is still a very basic app. It needs to be synced to the website and the 8am to 12pm limitation needs to go away. Only then it can be really useful. We hope, the IRCTC is working on the version 2 of the app.

Light metro no threat to Valiyasala

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The residents of Valiyasala are a relieved lot now. The alignment of the Light Metro has excluded the area of heritage importance from the proposed line. The light metro will follow the original alignment proposed by the Natpac for monorail in 2012. Though the DMRC has revised the alignment via Valiyasala last year, it revoked the decision after the residents protested following a TOI report.

Though the alignment proposed by Natpac for monorail is from Pallippuram to Karamana via Thampanoor ROB, DMRC, after a field visit, redrew the alignment through Valiyasala. The alignment proposed by DMRC from Thampanoor to Killipalam had suggested a cut across the Valiyasala agraharam. It was chosen to avoid the railway overbridge and the narrow stretch of NH 47 which could not be widened or occupied during construction stage, the DMRC then suggested.

However, following opposition, DMRC principal advisor E Sreedharan visited the place. Realizing the heritage importance of the place, he informed the Vyasa residents association of Valiyasala that the alignment will be changed. Three months ago, the residents' association members got an assurance from the Kerala Monorail Corporation Ltd that the monorail will not run over Valiyasala.

Krishna Iyer, president of Vyasa residents association, said that they received confirmation from KMCL that the new rail would not take route through agraharam. "As per their letter, construction through the original route, which is through the ROB, will be Rs 37 crore less than the route via Valiyasala," he said. Iyer said that they are relieved that the Light Metro would skip Valiyasala.

As per the earlier report of DMRC, around 22 families and two shops had to be displaced from Valiyasala for the work. It was proposed to earmark around Rs 15 crore for rehabilitation and compensation.

The alignment for light metro thus includes the ROB at Thampanoor, which will be a major hurdle considering the steep gradient. It is still uncertain whether light metro could negotiate steep gradients. In addition to Thampanoor ROB, there would be steep gradients at Ulloor and Plamoodu.

HC seeks Railway Board Chairman's response on contempt plea

The Delhi High Court today sought a response from Railway Board Chairman Arunendra Kumar on a plea seeking contempt proceedings against him for non-compliance of its direction to set-up a panel to carry out a review of the controversial 125km-long Katra-Banihal section of the rail link to Kashmir.

Justice V K Shali issued the show-cause notice to Kumar after it was informed that the railway has not constituted a committee within the stipulated period of four weeks given in May this year.

The court notice came on a contempt plea moved by the Centre for Public Interest Litigation (CPIL), through advocate Prashant Bhushan, who alleged that the act of the respondent (Kumar) amounts to a serious violation of this court's order.

The plea also alleged that the railway is ignoring the serious concerns raised by the experts regarding the 125km long Katra-Banihal section of the rail link to Kashmir.

The High Court had in May directed the Railway Board to judge the relative technical merits and demerits of the existing and the proposed alternative alignment by an expert committee (which will include E Sreedharan, former chief of DMRC) within eight weeks.

The Board had also been asked to take a decision regarding the alignment and other issues like cost within four weeks thereafter.

Bhushan said "the review of alignment which Railway Board had conducted from February 2008 to August 2009 was scuttled by internal manipulations within the Board and as a result the Board decided on August 31, 2009 to retain the existing flawed alignment without properly examining vital stability and safety issues. The Board also failed to consider an alternative alignment that was stable, safe and economical".

He further said that despite the orders by the Delhi High Court in December 2009 and September 2012, the Railway Board did not seriously consider CPIL's representation that the Board should review its August 2009 decision to retain the existing flawed alignment.

The Qazigund-Katra leg of Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail link project was announced by the then PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 2002.
