Trip Tips: Tea, trains and tales from Darjeeling

Clouds gather over Kurseong town near the eastern Indian hill town of Darjeeling, in this July 15, 2009 file photo.

(Reuters) - Darjeeling, for many people, means tea, but the eponymous hill resort nestled in the Himalayas in India's northeast is also a gateway to spectacular views of the world's third highest peak as well as a rare glimpse of snow leopards and red pandas.

There also are reminders of India's colonial past, including a narrow-gauge railway known as the "Toy Train" that makes a tourist run into the hills under power of a steam locomotive.

Visitors willing to make the extra pilgrimage to Sikkim, the Indian state to the north of West Bengal, where Darjeeling is located, can get a taste of Tibetan culture without visiting the Chinese-ruled region.

Mumbai-Goa Complimentary Train Trip to Cancer struck children – Courtesy Konkan Railway

The disease is such that it takes immense mental strength to face the reality of having been afflicted with it and, more than that, it requires unwavering faith to live through it every day to get healed and stay cheerful. But these little children, who are affected with Cancer, have chosen to see only the bright side of life. Konkan Railway only added a further cheer to their positive outlook by arranging a complimentary train trip for these cancer struck children on 5th Nov, 2014 from Mumbai to Goa and back on 8th November.

These children, who are undergoing treatment for Cancer of various stages at Tata Memorial Centre, started their Goa trip from CSTM station yesterday by train no.12133 CSTM – Mangalore Express. There are 38 children accompanied by attendants and paramedic staff from Tata Hospital.

The children, who are in the age group of 3 to 16 years, were upbeat about the train journey over the picturesque Konkan Railway route. With joy in their hearts and cheerful faces, they waived to all as they boarded the train.

Konkan Railway has been giving this complimentary train journey in 3-tier AC coach to such children from Tata Memorial Centre every year since 2007. On the occasion, Konkan Railway distributes gift hampers to the children and also extends complimentary on-board hospitality to them and their escorts during the to & fro journey. With this small gesture, Konkan Railway prays for an early and speedy recovery of these Little Angels.

Delhi Metro to reach Greater Noida soon

In order to boost metro connectivity inside the pockets of Greater Noida, the Noida and Greater Noida authority has prepared a fresh common proposal to bring a new metro line from Mahamaya Flyover to zero point of the Yamuna expressway.

A final proposal has been prepared and sent to the Uttar Pradesh government and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) for the approval.

According to the sources, the proposed metro line will act as a secondary line for residents of the twin cities.

“We are waiting to receive the final approval from the state government and DMRC. Once we will get a final nod on the proposal, we will start working on the project,” said an official from Noida Authority requesting anonymity.

The newly proposed expansion of the Delhi metro would serve as a secondary line to residents in the twin cities of Noida and Greater Noida

The Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be finalised once the government will share its viewpoint on the matter.

“In coming years, the face of Noida and Greater Noida will change completely. Commuting in twin cities will be no longer a herculean task,” added the official.

The UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav has cleared two major routes - a 29.7 km line from Noida City Centre (Sector 32) to Greater Noida, and another 6.7-km stretch from City Centre to Sector 62 in October. Both the projects are expected to be completed by 2017.

The Noida-Greater Noida Metro track will have 22 stations, out of which 13 will be constructed on the ground while seven will be elevated.

Two stations at Knowledge Park-I and Sector Delta-1 in Greater Noida are planned for future expansion.

Starting from Noida City Centre in Sector 32, the proposed Metro corridor will head towards Greater Noida via stations in sectors 50, 51, 78, 101, 81, Dadri Road, 83, 85, 137, 142, 143, 144, 147, 153 and sector 149 in Noida. It will enter Greater Noida through Knowledge Park-II and traverse Pari Chowk, Sector-Alpha 1 and 2, before terminating at Depot Station proposed near Knowledge Park-IV in Greater Noida. The entire Metro alignment is proposed to be elevated.

The Metro link between Noida and Greater Noida was first proposed in the year 2010 and received a go-ahead from the ministry of urban development in April 2014.

The ministry had also cleared DMRC's appointment as a consultant for the project on a turnkey basis.

Platforms at Pune Railway Station may be lengthened

PUNE: With a view to make the Pune Railway Station more passenger-friendly, the Pune Railway Division recently forwarded a proposal to the Railway Board to extend the length of the platforms at the station.

Speaking about the development on Thursday, Divisional Railway Manager Suneet Sharma told Sakal Times that the current platform length at the station is not suitable for 24-coach trains.

“Soon, most trains will have 24 coaches and hence a proposal to increase the length of the platforms at Pune Railway Station has been sent to the Railway Board,” he added.

Speaking about the other upgradations that would come up at Pune Railway Station within a year, Sharma said, “For the convenience of passengers, we are constructing two new foot overbridges (FOB) and escalators at the Pune Railway Station.”

He added that the construction work of FOBs and escalators is likely to take another six months for completion.

Railway officials stated that with the aim of providing better facilities, the Pune Railway Division has planned to construct two new FOBs, one at the Solapur-end and the other at Tadiwala Road.

A railway official said, “The width of the foot overbridge will be 4.5 metres. One of the bridges will connect platform number one to six, while the other will connect platform number one to three. We have also planned to install four escalators, two on platform number one and two on platform number six.”

Sharma said the proposal for installation of escalators has been sanctioned and the work is likely to commence soon.
