Railway recruitment exam to go on-line

New Delhi: Railway recruitment exams will henceforth will be online.

An instruction to this effect was today given by Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu who said the current manual system has failed to inspire confidence among the candidates, the public and quite often even among officials associated with the process.

The Minister has asked the concerned officials to implement the on-line method in a time-bound manner with adequate checks and balance.

"Though efforts have been made to improve the recruitment process, it still lacks to inculcate an unfaltered range of confidence among the candidates, the public and quite often even among the officials associated with the process," according to Prabhu.

Currently, Railway Recruitment Boards and Railway Recruitment Cells conduct written examination manually where propsective candidates answer questions on papers.

"Many times, examinations have to be scrapped due to the leakage of question papers," said a senior Railway Ministry official adding "that is why the minister wanted to conduct the entire recruitment exercise including examination on-line."

Railways recruit a substantial number of staff every year through RRBs and RRCs.

Guntur railway station gets pre-paid auto booth

A pre-paid auto-rickshaw booth was inaugurated on the premises of Guntur Railway Station here on Thursday. The booth, located at the main entrance of the station, would be manned by traffic police with assistance of the Government Railway Police.

Passengers alighting at the east end of the railway station would have to just walk to the booth, enter the details in a log book, pay the fare according to the rate chart and get into the auto to reach their destinations.

Inaugurating the pre-paid auto system, Superintendent of Police, Guntur Urban, Rajesh Kumar and Divisional Railway Manager, SCR, Guntur Division, N.K Prasad said that the pre-paid auto booth was opened to ensure a hassle-free journey to passengers. The minimum fare has been fixed at Rs.20 during the day time with which passengers can go to Bus Station, Sankar Vilas, Market, Taluka Centre, Donka Road, Yettu Road, R. Agraharam. The passengers have to shell out Rs. 50 to go to SVN Colony, Current Office, Hosanna Mandir, Housing Board Colony.

Mr. Rajesh Kumar said that passengers would have to submit the details of their name, address and destination and the details of auto drivers would also be entered into the book. “The decision was taken after receiving complaints that some auto drivers are fleecing passengers. But, the auto drivers sounded not too happy with the rates fixed by police. “They have fixed the minimum fare of Rs.20 which is hardly sufficient and unviable,’’ said Sk. Hussein, an auto driver.

Izzatnagar Railway workshop to construct bio-toilets for rail coaches

BAREILLY: The Izzatnagar railway workshop, which handles repair of rail coaches, will now undertake construction of bio-toilets for trains. The railway board has given approval for the project and construction of bio-toilets would begin by next year. The toilets constructed at this facility would be installed in trains across the country.

Confirming the development, chief public relation officer (CPRO), North Eastern Railway (NER), Alok Kumar Singh said, "Bio-toilets would be installed in coaches of trains. Just below the toilet, we would install a box with eight partitions. It will be fitted with a bacteria cultured by DRDO which eats the waste excreted from the body." He added that the bacteria consume the waste while extra water is stored in the compartments till they are cleaned out.

When asked about the budget allocated for the project, Singh said the information was not available as of now.

Initially, bio-toilets were being installed in premier trains like Shatabdis and Rajdhanis but railways is planning to put in this facility in coaches of all trains in phases.

The bio-toilets attached in railway coaches would help in keeping railway tracks clean. "Besides, when human waste falls on tracks, it creates a major problem in maintenance of iron rods. Even in the absence of bio-toilets, railway stations become very dirty and unhygienic as even when a train halts at a platform, passengers use the toilet," said Singh.

The problem with bio-toilets in rail coaches is that many passengers throw waste like plastic bottles and polythene bags in the toilets and bacteria are unable to break these down, leading to blockage of the box attached to the bio-toilets. Officials said steps will be taken to ensure that people are aware of this fact and desist from such behaviour.

Railway officials said the NER division had constructed more than 500 bio-toilets for around 200 coaches last year. The same work would soon begin at Izzatnagar railway workshop by next year. Set up in 1913, the Izzatnagar rail division is known for repair work of train coaches of both meter gauge and broad gauge. Besides, every year, the overhauling of loco engines of meter gauge also takes place here.

Apart from construction of bio-toilets, the Izzatnagar Railway workshop has received green signal from the railway board to construct wagons for goods trains. For this project, the board has approved a budget of around Rs 55 crore.

Coming soon: Subway, Pizza Hut, CCD and more executive lounges at railway stations

After launching e-catering (allowing passengers to book their meals online), the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) is reportedly in talks with quick service restaurant chains Cafe Coffee Day, Pizza Hut, Barista Coffee, Subway and Jumbo King Vadapav to open food kiosks at railway stations to offer better options to travellers.

According to a report in the Economic Times, Travel Food Services (TFS), a Mumbai-based F&B operator which has franchisee arrangements with brands like KFC, Domino's Pizza, Cafeccino, Haagen-Dazs, The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, is also bidding to operate in the food courts and food plazas at various stations. In addition to this, they will also operate executive lounges across railway stations like Vijayawada, Howrah and Jaipur by next April.

The first railway lounge, which was opened at the New Delhi railway station in 2012, offers an array of services like wi-fi and buffet meals. The services of the lounge are available to passengers at a fee of Rs 300 for three hours. If the passenger wishes to extend the stay beyond three hours, Rs 125 will be charged for every additional hour.

Additional services such as the Wash & Change, business centre and retail convenience store will be chargeable as per usage by the passengers. IRCTC aims to open 50 more such executive lounges, providing world-class facilities at major railway stations in India in the near future.

Plagued with complaints, Railways has stepped up efforts to improve catering services on trains. Couple of months back, they had appointed Haldiram to sell pre-cooke,d ready-to-eat food packets on trains. The pre-cooked food included Dal Rice, Hyderabadi pulao, Chole rice and more for four days. Based on the feedback received, IRCT decided to approach private popular restaurants to provide food. It has also made arrangements with reputed food chains and eating joints for providing food through SMS-based orders on trains.

Efforts to drum up the quality of food at stations and trains have been steadily taking place after the Railways e imposed heavy fines totalling Rs.11.50 lakh on nine caterers including Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation for serving "bad quality" food in trains in August this year. IRCTC was fined Rs 1 lakh as a cockroach was found in the food in Kolkata Rajdhani on July 23.

Besides Kolkata Rajdhani, bad food was found on 13 other trains which include Paschim Express, Pushpak Express, Motihari Express, Shiv Ganga Express, Golden Temple Mail, Netravati Express, Punjab Mail, Howrah-Amritsar Mail and Chandigarh Shatabdi.

While in some trains, food was found to be kept in unhygienic conditions, in others... it was either found to be stale or substandard.
