वीरंगम Viramgam (VG): In a major relief to passengers travelling to and from Saurashtra, the work on the 65km double tracks between Viramgam and Surendranagar is likely to be completed in four months.
“The work is under progress and it will soon be ready for operation. Once the double tracks between Viramgam and Surendranagar is ready, it will help maintain punctuality of trains coming and going from the Rajkot division. If we have double tracks, train services will not be affected while carrying out maintenance work of the tracks,” Vinay Babtiwale, Divisional Railway Manager of the Western Railway’s Rajkot Division, told.
Sources said that doubling of tracks will help railways extend trains to Surendranagar and Rajkot in future.
“There are many trains that currently terminate at Ahmedabad. These can be extended to Surendranagar and Rajkot stations to provide more connectivity between Rajkot and other cities of Saurashtra,” said an insider.
On Monday, S K Sood, general manager of the Western Railways, conducted annual inspection of the Rajkot division along with his team comprising of senior officers.
During his visit, various representatives met him and demanded more trains to Rajkot. He assured that the Railways would consider their representations.
Meanwhile, a proposal of the Rajkot division was pending with the ministry of Railways for doubling of tracks between Surendranagar and Rajkot.
“We had sent the proposal three years ago to the central government. It is a Rs 1,300 crore project and if sanctioned will give major boost to the region both in terms of passengers and goods transport,” said a senior official.

मुंबई Mumbai: Tuesday was a red-letter day for the Central Railway as it celebrated the first-ever run of an electrical multiple unit (EMU) exactly 90 years ago on February 3, 1925.
From where to where did it run?
A four-coach rake, it was flagged off by then governor of Mumbai Sir Leslie Wilson, and it ran between Victoria Terminus, now Chattrapati Shivaji Terminus, and Kurla on the Harbour Line.
However, much has changed since then, something acknowledged in an official statement sent by CR to commemorate the occasion.
What’s the Harbour Line of today like?
Harbour Line today is possibly the fastest growing suburban segment in the country, with an annual passenger growth of over 9% for the past decade. The fact that it runs some of the oldest Direct Current rakes, that too nine-coach, on its tracks has also meant that it faces more frequent traffic disruptions than other CR segments, agreed officials.
The running of coal and fuel wagons, the main revenue earner for the railways, is an added headache for the people who regularly commute on the Harbour Line.
What are the positives on the anvil?
In the past two to three years, good news is slowly trickling in for the section. There are plans to create a 49-kilometre air-conditioned elevated corridor between CST and Panvel with a spur going to the proposed Navi Mumbai airport.
Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation, which is working on lengthening the platforms of Harbour Line to run 12-coach trains, believes the work should be completed by the end of this year or early next year.
By next year, work on converting its electrical systems from 1,500-volt Direct Current to 25,000-volt Alternating Current is also expected to begin.

You can now book a rail ticket online and get it delivered at home where the payment can be made.
Initiating this “cash on delivery” (CoD) system rail ticketing, IRCTC is targeting those customers who are reluctant to use their credit or debit cards as well as those who don’t have net-banking facility.
“One has to just book the ticket online and payments will be made at the time of delivery of tickets,” said a senior IRCTC official involved with the project.
This scheme has been launched on pilot basis and the service will be available in more than 200 cities initially. Customers can book a ticket 5 days prior to commencement of journey.
While Rs 40 will be charged for the delivery of each Sleeper Class ticket, Rs 60 will be charged for an AC class ticket.
Anduril Technologies through their website and their App – BookMyTrain.com is authorised for providing CoD services.
This is another attempt to move people away from the ticket counters and decongest the booking windows, the official said.
