RailYatri.in launched a new app 'Fare Calculator'

Committee demands early start to survey

The South Western Railway Zonal Railway Passengers Welfare Committee has appealed to the South Western Railway General Manager Pradeep Saxena to take up a preliminary survey of the Harapanhalli – Gadag railway line that was announced in the previous railway budget.

In a press release here on Sunday, committee general secretary Rohit Jain has said that the line between Harapanhalli and Gadag was declared by the then Railway Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda to help reduce the distance and time between Bengaluru/Davangere to Gadag, Bagalakote and Vijayapura considerably. The current distance between Davangere and Vijayapura is 393 km via Gadag and Hubballi. But with the new line the distance will be 330 km from Vijayapura to Davangere.

While the country was watching India play against Pakistan in the ICC Cricket World Cup on Sunday, volunteers of the National Service Scheme and other local people cleaned up the surroundings of Hampankatta and Mangaluru Central Railway Station.

It was the third consecutive Sunday in which the volunteers took part in the Ramakrishna Mission’s series of 40-week cleanliness drive of the city started from February 1. The cleanliness was carried out for about four hours in the forenoon.

An official at the health section of the Mangaluru City Corporation said that damaged inter-lock tiles near the railway station on a road connecting the station with the Nehru Maidan concrete road was replaced at the cost of the Ramakrishna Mutt. Compound walls on both the sides of the road were painted after removing the posters. Roads were swept and garbage from roadside was lifted.

Ganesh Karnik, MLC, flagged off the drive as part of Swachch Bharat Abhiyan.

Over the last two Sundays, volunteers had taken up the cleaning of the Mangaladevi ward and the area surrounding the State Bank of India bus terminus.

18 interesting facts about India Railways

1) Indian Railways started its service 161 years ago on 16 April 1853 when the first passenger train was run over a stretch of 33 kilometres from Mumbai to Thane. The train with 14 railway carriages, carrying around 400 guests, left Bori Bunder at 3:30 p.m. that day. It was declared a public holiday then.

2) Nationalised in 1951, Indian Railways is today the largest rail network in Asia and the world’s second largest network operated under a single management. It has 115,000 km of track length. It runs 12,617 trains to carry over 23 million passengers daily – equivalent to moving the entire population of Australia – connecting more than 7,172 stations.
