DC-TO-AC CONVERSION: CR FAILS TO INFORM RAILWAY SAFETY COMMISSIONER

In a major embarrassment to Central Railway, a power transmission tower, limited space, a narrow tunnel and low-lying bridges have yet again stopped the historic conversion of the trains from direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC).

This was to have taken place on Saturday night, but did not only because the commissioner of railway safety was not informed.

CR officials had decided to switch over to AC from the obsolete DC technology on Saturday night. They had issued formal notifications in newspapers and had starting working on the plans. However, at the last minute the commissioner of railway safety said he wants to conduct an inspection along the stretch.

The railway board had issued a permission letter for the conversion but said CR had to be careful at four locations.

Commissioner of railway safety Chetan Bakshi said he had not been informed by CR of the conversion dates. "Now, I will be inspecting the stretch where the conversion is to take place as scheduled," he said.

Bullet trains on track: Railway minister

The project to bring bullet trains to India was on the right track and the government was also trying to increase the speed of express trains, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said on Thursday.

"Bullet train is one big project that we are working on Feasibility studies are being done for Ahmedabad-Mumbai route with the help of Japan and Delhi-Chennai route with the help of China. The project is on the right track," Prabhu said at the 'Manthan' conclave organised by Aaj Tak here.

He, however, added that such big projects take time as a lot of investment and technical expertise is required.

Prabhu said his government was also working on a plan to improve speed of all kinds of trains, besides improving schedule of freight trains that was the backbone of Indian Railways.

"For freight, which gives two-thirds of our revenues, we are building dedicated freight corridor that will not only improve our income but also decongest our tracks, thus leading to more efficiency," he added.

The minister said apart from modernisation of India's railway network, the focus was also on providing better amenities to almost three crore passengers that use railways every day.

"We have also created a customer service portal through which passengers can get their grievances redressed while accountability of our staff will also be fixed," he added.

Central Railway beset with fake MPs’ ticket calls

Fake letterhead of Union minister Anil Shastri

Fake politicians and Members of Parliament (MPs) have been calling Central Railway (CR) officials to book train tickets under the special quota, as a desperate attempt by touts to get tickets in the peak holiday season.
Officers have said that they have been getting these calls for the past 15 to 20 days, but when they call back to check, it usually turns out to be a fake MP. An official said, on the condition of anonymity, “I received a call from a person saying that he is an MP from the Samajwadi Party in UP and his name is Rajaram. However, upon conducting our own inquiries we came to know that the party does not have an MP with this name. We then traced this call to Sasaram in Bihar.”
Another fraudster sent a request to confirm his ticket using a fake letterhead of Anil Shastri, a former Union minister and grandson of late Lal Bahadur Shastri. Similar letterheads with the names of Rajnath Singh and Maneka Gandhi were found in April as well (as published in The Asian Age on April 23), but officials said that this has not stopped touts from trying to get quota tickets using the same method.
Confirming the incident, chief commercial manager (CCM) R.D. Sharma said, “Yes, I myself have been getting calls from MPs and politicians to book tickets under the quota, but when my office tries to find out if the information is true, we realise that that the person is fake. Mr Shastri, especially, called to say that neither he nor his office has sent for any ticket request.”
Mr Sharma has said that most of the calls have been coming from Bihar, “For the past month I have been getting calls from places like Sasaram and Khagaria in Bihar, saying they are from UP or Delhi. But when we check the person’s credentials, they turned out to be fake,” he added.
These requests and phone numbers have been sent to the vigilance department to try to discover if there is a nexus behind these kinds of requests.
