Gujjar stir: Indian Railways clocks losses worth Rs 100 crore

Indian Railways to relaunch premium service called 'Suvidha' trains



Faced with some anomalies in dynamic fare system of the premium trains, the Railways will relaunch the service as 'Suvidha' trains after making certain changes in the system from July.

Railways run more than 50 premium trains, connecting major cities, on dynamic pricing system, which operates on the lines of the airline booking model.

While the initial fare is equivalent to Tatkal fare, it keeps increasing as seats get booked and departure date nears.

"It was found that tickets for 3 AC started to cost more than that for 2AC. So, we are making some changes to address this issue," Railway Board Member (Traffic) Ajay Shukla said.

‘Technology Mission’ to function for research and use on Indian Railways

The Railways Ministry has decided to set up the 'Technology Mission for Indian Railways' as a consortium along with the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Ministry of Science and Technology and Ministry of Industries on an investment-sharing model for taking up identified projects for applied research and use in railways.

With the wagon procurement programme running behind schedule, Indian railways is facing an acute shortage of about 2,000 wagons every day for carrying coal, causing strain on its ambitious target of transporting 1.18 billion tons freight this year.

Railways Save 17000 Minutes of Passengers With Improved Punctuality

NEW DELHI: Under fire from Prime Minister Narendra Modi for trains running late, the Indian Railways in the last one month improved train punctuality from 72 to 78 percent and as a result saved 17,000 precious minutes of the passengers.

The prime minister in March has sought explanation from Railways over late running of train after several MPs have complained about it. The railways have been receiving daily report – a first for the railways -- from all 16 zonal railways about punctuality of trains in the region.

Railways to Hike AC Class Fares from June 1: Report


New Delhi: Fares for first class and AC class in passenger trains besides freight charges will be increased by 0.5 per cent from June 1 as new service tax will come into effect.

"Currently, 3.708 per cent service tax is levied on train fares for AC Class, First Class and freight. This will go up to 4.2 per cent from June which means the rise is only 0.5 per cent," said a senior Railway Ministry official.

If the AC fare is Rs 1,000, then you will be charged Rs 10 more. Increase in service tax will be applicable on tickets purchased on June 1 and onwards, he added.

While the increase in passenger fare is applicable on AC and First Class only, service tax will be levied on all goods transported by Railways.

The official said the hike is marginal and it is being done as per the General Budget proposals.
