SC Railway gets first bio-diesel engine

The first diesel engine with 5 per cent mix of bio-diesel will make its debut on the South Central Railway on the occasion of World Environment Day today.

This is part of the several measures to arrest environment degradation and place SCR as a model zone on Indian Railways, South Central Railway General Manager Srivastava said.

He said SCR was generating one MW of solar power for use in lighting, water heating etc. It has already fitted bio-toilets in nine train rakes and appealed to the passengers to safeguard the bio-toilets by not littering in them.

Delhi metro on auto pilot by next year

Delhi Metro’s new trains for Phase III are all set to change the way you travel on the Metro.

NEW DELHI: Delhi Metro's new trains for Phase III are all set to change the way you travel on the Metro. Designed to run driverless, the trains are sleeker, faster and more energy-efficient.

The first set of coaches arrived on Thursday from Korea, with the rest are expected to arrive by year-end. Interestingly though, a large chunk of these trains will be manufactured indigenously—in Bangalore. The trains are by Hyundai Rotem, and will run on the two new lines—Majlis Park to Shiv Vihar and Janakpuri (West) to Botanical Garden.

Both of these lines are expected to become operational by next year-end, said Delhi Metro Rail Corporation spokesperson Anuj Dayal.

Third track between Mokama and Mugalsarai to be laid: MoS (Railways)

Patna: Union Minister of State for Railways Manoj Sinha today said third pair of tracks between Mokama and Mughalsarai would be laid to ease the load of a large number of trains plying on the route. Mr Sinha, after inaugurating a retiring room at Patna Junction here, said the government was aware of the fact about heavy load of trains plying on the route. Two lanes of track were not enough to meet the requirement of heavy traffic on the rout, he noted. “Work on laying of third pair of tracks between Mokama and Mughalsarai would begin soon which could help in easing the traffic load on the route,” Mr Sinha said, adding that new trains would be introduced only after improving the infrastructural facilities. Mr Sinha said Digha rail bridge over Ganga river, would be completed by end of this months.

Mumbai: 40 Central Railway services to be cancelled every hour from Sunday

Brace for chaos on Central Railway next week, as the switch from 1,500-V DC to 25,000-V AC will force trains to crawl at 15 kmph at nine spots between CST and Thane; this means cancellation of services and, of course, even more crowded trains

The power system upgradation on Central Railway (CR) will have some shocking results for commuters delayed trains and large-scale cancellation of services which will result in locals being even more crowded.

The upgradation work will be completed on Saturday night. Pic/Shadab Khan

The reason? the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) has deemed that the speed of trains at nine spots between Thane and CST cannot surpass 15 kmph when the new 25,000-volt system is put to use. According to officials, this restriction will force them to slash 40 services an hour during peak hours, a massive cut for the already overcrowded suburban line.

With 40 services being cancelled every hour, commuters on Central Railway’s Main line can expect to see such scenes on a regular basis from Sunday. File pic for representation

Railway Mixed High School switches over to CBSE pattern

In deference to demand of parents, the Railway authorities have secured CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) recognition for the Railway Mixed High School here.

Ever since the Anglo-Indian Board was subsumed by Samacheer Kalvi introduced by the State Government a few years ago, the school, which will be celebrating its centenary during 2015-16, had been grappling with shrinking enrolment.

Though with a higher accommodation capacity, the school had only 525 students on rolls. As employees of a Central-Government undertaking, parents had a natural desire for educating their wards in a CBSE school.

The Salem Railway Division thought it fit to convert the institution into a CBSE school rather than securing a Kendriya Vidyalaya, which is present in several railway colonies. The institution is equipped with buildings and other infrastructure conforming to CBSE requirements.

New Delhi: Railways has rolled out a non-AC coach of Rewari-Sitapur passenger train lit by solar panels installed on its roof as part of its plan to harness the green source of energy in a big way.

It cost about Rs 3.90 lakh for equipping the non-AC coach of Rewari-Sitapur passenger train while the Railways will save Rs 1.24 lakh per year in power cost.

The solar panels generate about 17 units of power in a day which enables the lighting system in the coach.

Currently we will be installing solar panels on non-AC coaches only, he said.

Solar panels have also been provided on top of coaches of two narrow-gauge trains plying on Pathankot-Jogindernagar route in Kangra Valley section and Kalka-Shimla section on trial basis. "On evaluation of trial and cost benefit analysis, further study of economic viability will be undertaken," he said.

Salem Railway Division to eliminate 79 unmanned level crossings by 2018

All the 79 unmanned level crossings in Salem Railway Division will be totally eliminated in a phased manner by 2018.

The Railways will adopt a three-way process for the elimination of the unmanned level crossings: construction of limited use sub-ways; construction of flyovers with the financial support of the Tamil Nadu Government and connecting the roads leading to unmanned level crossings with the adjacent highways, Shubhranshu, Divisional Railway Manager, said while addressing a press conference organised in connection with the International Level Crossing Awareness Day here.

Thanks to the awareness among the people, the accident rate at the unmanned level crossings had been very minimal in the Salem Railway Division.

Last year only two accidents at unmanned level crossing had taken place, of which one person was killed and another was injured.

Ever since the new Salem Railway Division was inaugurated eight years ago, only 15 accidents at the unmanned level crossings have been reported leading to 14 deaths. “Our aim is to bring down the accident rate at the unmanned level crossings to zero”, Mr. Shubhranshu said.

He said that cooperation of the respective district administration is essential for the construction of flyovers and limited use sub-ways.
