IRCTC adds two new Servers to ease Tatkal bookings

New Delhi: Railways food catering and tourism promotion firm, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), on Friday said that it has upgraded its website by introducing two high capacity servers that have doubled peak time efficiency.

According to the IRCTC, its portal installed two Linux-enabled servers on June 1, 2015 raising the booking capacity to over 14,000 tickets per minute from the existing 7,200.

IRCTC Chairman and Managing Director A.K. Manocha said the capacity augmentation has been done as an “immediate step” to cater to the summer time demand for tatkal tickets and a forenoon flurry in their online reservations.

Maharashtra Govt plans Special Purpose Vehicle for faster execution of Rail projects

Mumbai: To fast-track pending railroad projects in Maharashtra, the state government has sent a proposal to the Union railway ministry for setting up a special purpose vehicle (SPV) to execute these lines.

This SPV route with states, which railway minister Suresh Prabhu is stressing to push railway projects, will make available institutional finance for infrastructure addition without burdening the Centre or the state’s coffers.

The Maharashtra government had agreed to share 50% of the costs of eight proposed and pending rail routes, including the Ahmednagar-Beed-Parli Vaijanath railway. For this, the state cabinet recently approved Rs 1,413 crore.

Last week, prime minister Narendra Modi had reviewed the progress on the Rs 2,826-crore projects, which were pursued by senior BJP leader and former union minister lateGopinath Munde in his lifetime.

“We have sent a proposal to the railway ministry regarding setting up of an SPV. Now, it is for the ministry to respond,” said a senior official from the state transport department. “Forming an SPV will enable us to take up projects faster and on priority,” he said.

The officer stated that this would make projects bankable, which meant that the entity could raise funds from financial institutions and execute works faster.

A debt equity ratio of 30:70 with the state and the railways holding an equal share of equity has been proposed.

SPVs are joint ventures between two or more agencies. An example is the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation which was formed in 1999 by the state and the railways to fund rail projects on the Mumbai suburban network under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project.

“Once the SPV is formed and stakeholders like the state and central governments are on board, it will decide on which projects are to be taken up for execution,” the official said.
  • The projects
  • Ahmednagar-Beed-Parli Vaijanath
  • Vadsa-Desaiganj
  • Wardha-Yavatmal-Nanded
  • Karad-Chiplun
  • Nagpur-Nagbhid
  • Pune-Nashik
  • Gadchandur-Adilabad
  • Manmad-Dhule-Indore

However, the last three are yet to be officially sanctioned.

Land required for Railway infrastructure projects: Prabhu

Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu today said land is required for any infrastructure project related to the railways.

"Whether for a sea port, airport or for the Railways, land is required. We need land for development of Railway infrastructure and for capacity expansion. But, getting land is becoming an important issue, which needs to be resolved by the Centre and the states jointly," he said at a news conference here.

Now, mobile app to get your railway coach cleaned

Railways under minister Suresh Prabhu has also set up a new house-keeping department in the Railway Board.

NEW DELHI: Soon you would be able to get your railway coach cleaned in a matter of miniutes by lodging a complaint online. In line with Modi government's 'Swachh Bharat' mission, the railways is to launch 'Clean My Coach' mobile app for all long-distance trains.

Once operational, a passenger can file an online complaint which will be attended within 15 minutes. After successful testing of the scheme in Central Railways, the transporter plans to extend it to long routes across the country. It will ensure speedy cleaning of coaches or toilets in long-distance trains which have housekeeping facilities on-board.
