Train services in Madurai division came to a grinding halt on Sunday night after railway employees, affiliated to Southern Railway Mazdoor Union, went on a flash strike, following the suicide of a railway employee, who was booked in a theft case, in Sivakasi.
The union members, led by divisional secretary J.M. Rafi, alleged that Railway Protection Force personnel in Virudhunagar foisted a case against a keyman, Vellaidurai, and that he died due to the torture of the RPF personnel.
However, Sivakasi police who booked the suicide case on Sunday said that the cause of the death could be ascertained only after the post-mortem. Deputy Superintendent of Police (Sivakasi) A.C. Vellaiyan said that in a suicide note, Vellaidurai had not made any allegation against the RPF, but against the daughter of one of the accused. “The note said that the woman had threatened him of exposing him through the media,” the DSP said.
