Tamil Nadu Call to operate special trains to Velankanni

The Kanyakumari District Rail Users’ Association (KDRUA) has urged the authorities of Thiruvananthapuram Railway Division to operate special trains to Velankanni from Thiruvananthapuram, through Nagercoil, Tirunelveli, Virudhunagar, Pudukottai, Tiruchi and Thanjavur.

In a release issued here on Sunday, P. Edward Jeni, secretary of KDRUA, said that the festival of Shrine Basilica of Our Lady of Health, would begin on August 29 for which pilgrims would visit Velankanni from all over the world.

Thousands of pilgrims visiting the shrine from Thiruvananthapuram took the shortest route to Velankanni, through Nagercoil, Tirunelveli, Virudhunagar, Pudukottai, Tiruchi and Thanjavur every year. As there was no direct train service to Velankanni, the KDRUA appealed to the authorities of Thiruvananthapuram Railway Division to operate special trains as early as possible for the festival season. The Western Railway, it pointed out, had already announced special trains from Bandra Terminus to Velankanni.

The KDRUA said that last minute announcement of the weekly special train between Nagercoil and Velankanni failed to receive good patronage last year and hence an early announcement should be made this year with passenger-friendly timings.

The annual festival of the shrine begins on August 29 and ends on September 8.

Plea for more trains to Kanyakumari

BHEL Kumari Nala Sangam here has urged the Railway Ministry to operate additional trains from and to Kanyakumari via Tiruchi.

In a memorandum, its secretary B.G. Subramonia Pillai said several residents of Tiruchi whose native was Kanyakumari were working in central and state government establishments here for many years. The trains from Kanyakumari to Chennai and back via Tiruchi arrived at odd hours at Tiruchi with priority in reservation quota being given to Chennai-bound travellers. Hence, the Tiruchi – Tirunelveli Intercity Express must be extended to Thiruvananthapuram via Nagercoil as this would benefit those proceeding to Kanyakumari and Thiruvananthapuram.

The Kanyakumari – Puducherry weekly train must be made into a daily service. The timing should be changed in such way that it departs Kanyakumari at 8 p.m. and arrives Tiruchi at 3 a.m.

Many from Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts and Thiruvananthapuram proceed to Velankanni church, the Saneeswarar temple at Tirunallar and Nagore Dargah every day. There is no direct train connectivity to these places from southern districts. Hence, the railway administration could operate a daily night train to Karaikal from Kochuveli via Nagercoil, Tirunelveli, Virudhunagar, Karaikudi, Pudukottai, Tiruchi, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam.

Don't blame floods for MP rail mishaps

Two train tragedies in Madhya Pradesh have again exposed the gaping holes in the Indian Railways' extremely poor safety systems. They also showed up again the railway authorities' refusal to accept responsibility for mishaps and their penchant to find scapegoats or strange and unconvincing reasons for them. Thirty people were killed when two trains, the Kamayani Express bound for Varanasi and the Janata Express en route to Mumbai, derailed at the same spot within minutes of each other. Some coaches crashed into a river swollen with rain and water released from a dam. The reflex response of the authorities was to shift the cause of the accident to matters beyond their control. The Railway Board said that it was the ''freakiest of freaky'' accidents. Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said it was a natural calamity. But nature had only as much to do with the accident as it has when a bus hits an uprooted tree lying across the road.

It is said that the tracks had subsided due to flash floods or water from the dam, and the coaches that moved over them derailed and collapsed. This is not a natural calamity. It only shows that the tracks were not being properly watched and maintained when there was a threat to them. Such maintenance should be a 24-hour job but there should be special vigil when there is a chance of rain or floods. The release of water from the dam should have been anticipated. When it happened, steps should have been taken to ensure that the tracks held, or traffic should have been cancelled or diverted. Floods are common in the monsoon season and to blame them for train accidents is to evade responsibility. The railways had even invented a tornado to explain the 1988 Bangalore-Trivandrum Island Express tragedy in which over 100 people were killed.

The Indian Railways' safety record is the worst in the world. While safety should be the first priority of the railways, it does not receive the attention it needs. Tracks are not well maintained, coaches are old, signal system needs improvement, unmanned crossings should not be there, and all safety systems need upgradation. Importantly, accountability should be fixed for accidents. It has been pointed out that responsibility for 40 per cent of railway accidents can be directly traced to the staff. Yet, punishment of guilty staff is rare. The need for better management of and more investment in the railways is often underlined. Bullet trains are being planned. But the most important item in the agenda should be ensuring the safety of passe

India Post gets off trains

5 12:34 AM IST
The surge in business through e-commerce parcels has forced India Post to reduce its traditional dependence on Indian Railways and more on own vehicles for short-haul (200-500 km) routes.
The reason has also to do with their difficulty in getting permission for installing closed-circuit TV for security purposes in an allotted train compartment. This makes it impossible to track the orders from a security point of view. "We need to change our delivery mechanism, which has remained the same over the decades. We have to evolve with the changing dynamics, especially seeing the boom in e-commerce. Shifting to a road network will ensure a secure and quick delivery of parcels," an official from the department of posts (DoP) added.
Also, given that e-commerce is a growth segment for India Post, it is investing to improve services in smaller towns and cities. In the US, too, the US Postal Service has managed to boost revenues by partnering with the Postal Service. Online retailers who have partnered with India Post gets the kind of reach no other logistics firm gives them. Radhika Aggarwal, CMO, at Shopclues, says that 6-8 per cent of their total deliveries happen through India Post thanks to its wide network.
Over time, Aggarwal expects the share of India Post in total deliveries to increase from current levels. Cash on delivery from e-commerce is expected to touch Rs 1,000 crore this financial year (April on), from Rs 500 crore at end-March. The country's e-commerce segment is expected to grow from the current $13 billion to $137 billion by 2020, says Morgan Stanley. That means a steady rise in deliveries. India Post plans to buy 250 new vehicles by the end of this year, apart from the existing 1,300. The routes (cities/states) to be serviced are being identified and deliveries have started on about 12 of these.
There are 150,000 post offices, with 550,000 staffers. The post, had said Samuel Thomas, director, transportation, Amazon India, was one of the "prime carriers we use as a delivery channel". Ámazon services about 19,000 pincodes through 140,000 post offices. There are around 26,000 pincodes in India.
In fact, India Post is considering a separate entity for e-commerce in the next couple of years. It plans to invest Rs 300 crore in upgrading and setting up new automatic parcel centres to meet the delivery requirements from e-commerce entities. It now has one each in Delhi and Kolkata. New ones will come up in Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad and Bengaluru. The data shows the largest number of bookings (in value) from Delhi. Then come Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. For e-commerce entities, about 70 per cent of orders come from tier-II and tier-III cities and towns.
India Post aims for revenue of Rs 200 crore in 2015-16 from e-commerce, more than twice as high as the earlier year. The annual expectation after five years is Rs 5,000 crore, an official said
