SCR to install 200 Automatic Ticket Vending Machines

Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), Vijayawada, Ashok Kumar has said the Indian Railways are planning to install 200 Automatic Ticket Vending Machines (ATVMs) for the convenience of passengers.

During the current financial year, as many as 70 ATVMs were commissioned at 26 sub-urban stations, while 112 machines were installed at 48 railway stations in the South Central Railway (SCR) railway zone. In addition to the existing machines, plans are afoot to commission 200 more ATVMs at the identified ‘B’ and ‘D’ category stations, Mr. Ashok Kumar said.

As part of improving passenger amenities, the railways have earmarked Rs. 133.46 crore in 2015-16. Focus is being laid on construction of more waiting halls, escalators and lifts, circulating areas and platform covers.

On Board Housekeeping Services (OBHS) have been provided in 36 pairs of trains and in 66 (long distance) express trains.

As many as 171 bio-toilets have been provided in 54 coaches under the railway zone, which comprises Hyderabad, Secunderabad, Vijayawada, Guntur, Guntakal and Nanded divisions.

The railways have so far provided 1,650 bio-toilets in 508 coaches in the zone this year, the DRM said.

On the performance of the zone, Mr. Ashok Kumar said the SCR had earned Rs. 5,449.25 crore from April to July 2015, which was 10.72 per cent higher when compared to the same period last year.

Despite the reduction in cement loading and fall in coal and iron ore imports from various ports, the zone registered 38.15 million tonnes of freight loading (up to July end), which was 2.2 per cent higher over the corresponding period last year, the DRM added.

He appealed to passengers to cooperate with the railway authorities in keeping the stations and trains clean.

Rapid Metro Phase-II chugs on the fast track

Delhi ,
The construction for the Rapid Metro Phase-II is expected to be over by March next year.

The Phase-II will add seven kilometres of double track stretching south of Sikanderpur station along Golf Course Road, with six new stations.

It was disclosed by Rapid Metro Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Rajiv Banga, speaking to the media persons at the launch of the ‘road rage’ campaign to promote responsible driving and road safety. “The construction for Phase-II is on schedule. We expect it to be over by March next year. We are also in the process of procuring rolling stock for the Phase-II line. It is expected to reach Gurgaon by this month end,” said Mr. Banga.

Mr. Banga said that the ridership of the Rapid Metro had gone up by 25 per cent over the past four-five months and saw another increase of 25 per cent on August 7 and August 10 due to traffic snarls on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway. Disclosing the plans to further increase the ridership, Mr. Banga said an approval was being sought for the construction of a foot overbridge connecting Udyog Vihar Phase-IV to IndusInd Bank Cyber City metro station. “We expect to get the necessary approvals in a month’s time. After approvals, it may take another 5-6 months for the construction. So we expect the proposed foot over-bridge to be ready by March-April next year. It will have escalators on both sides and cater to 50,000-60,000 working population in Udyog Vihar. We expect it to add to the ridership of the Rapid Metro,” said Mr. Banga.

In a reply to a question on plans for Phase-III of the Rapid Metro, Mr. Banga said that they were waiting for Haryana Government to finalise the alignment for metro connectivity between Dwarka and Gurgaon. Replying to a question on frequent jams on Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway, Gurgaon Police Commissioner Navdeep Virk, who was present on the occasion, said that the infrastructure was not adequate to handle the rush.

CR revives 2007 plan to make Panvel station a terminus

An eight-year-old proposal for a terminus at Panvel station has been revived by the Central Railway, with tenders for Rs 38 crore set to open on Monday. A terminal will make it possible for outstation trains to be terminated at Panvel, and a rail transport hub can be developed in the vicinity of the proposed second international airport.

Currently, Panvel serves only as the terminating point for suburban trains on the Harbour Line and a passage for south-bound trains that make a brief halt at Panvel. Sometimes, a few trains are diverted via the Panvel-Karjat route.

However, with Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu keen on developing satellite termini, as mentioned by him in his Rail Budget speech, CR officials feel Panvel, which has space and is strategically located, can be converted into a major terminus for outstation trains.

Once this is developed, Navi Mumbai residents won't have to go to CST, Dadar or LTT to board a long-distance train.

The plan was first made in 2007 by CR's then general manager, VK Kaul, who had proposed to develop a terminus at Panvel at Rs 22 crore. The Panvel masterplan has included everything from extra platforms, pit lines to park trains, yards for servicing and a big circulating area for commuter traffic.

On Monday, tenders will be floated for construction of platforms, minor bridges, earthwork, subway and RCC deck slab, washable aprons for train maintenance on the New Panvel side in connection with the Panvel Coaching Terminus. The railways are also developing addi tional corridors around Panvel.

The Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation has been conducting surveys of two new projects for suburban lines connecting Virar-Diva-Panvel and an additional line between Panvel and Karjat. With these, Panvel will become a transport hub for suburban and outstation trains by the next decade.

“The idea is also to have a terminus at Panvel so that more and more trains can be terminated there and not enter the suburban corridors, which leads to delays and congestion,“ a CR official said.

The Panvel terminus plan will also help develop the entire Mumbai Metropolitan Region as the railways can then take trains to smaller townships like Alibaug and Roha. Also, the existing network of rail lines in the region that ferries goods can be upgrading without difficulty.
