The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is all set to receive funding for phase II from French agency Agence Francaise De Development (AFD), which will advance €200 million as a sovereign loan.
An agreement is expected to be signed on Friday between BMRCL and AFD in the presence of the Chief Minister. Phase II of the metro project involves extensions of the current reaches as well as laying two new lines between RV Road and Bommasandra as well as Gottigere to Nagawara. On Friday, the French embassy, along with BMRCL and AFD, will launch a photo exhibition titled ’60 solutions against climate change’ at the Rangoli Metro Art Centre. It comprises 21 photos by renowned photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand from his ‘Earth from Above’ series. AFD was previously involved in Phase I where it had extended a long-term credit facility of €110 million. However, the Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA), which was a major contributor to Phase I, is not likely to extend any more credit to the project.

he Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has reduced its fares on the Airport Express line by 50 per cent, bringing the minimum fare to Rs 10 from the earlier Rs 20. While the move is expected to boost ridership on the line, DMRC officials said the move was also expected to lessen the load on the Blue Line.
“The minimum single-journey fare on the corridor will be Rs 10 against the earlier Rs 20. The maximum fare will be Rs 60 against the earlier Rs 100,” a DMRC statement said.
Senior Delhi Metro officials said they were trying to “incentivise” the use of the Airport Express line over the Blue Line, which runs from Dwarka Sector 21 to Vaishali and Noida. “We will tell passengers of the reduced travel time if they use the Airport Express line. One of the problems we face on the Blue Line is congestion during peak hours and the move is aimed at lessening that,” an official said.
The slash in fares comes over a year after the last reduction in July last year, when fares were slashed by 40 per cent.
“As a result of that measure, the average daily ridership on the corridor increased significantly from around 13,000 in June 2014 to more than 20,000 in February this year. On August 28, 2015, more than 32,000 people travelled by the Airport Express line,” the statement said.

CHENNAI: A 58-year-old school dropout, who posed as a railways officer and cheated several people promising them jobs, was arrested by police on Tuesday, along with his two sons who aided him in the crime. The man Janardhanan and his sons J Sujesh, 30, and J Sumesh, 28, collected 50.75 lakh from job aspirants, police said.
Following complaints, they were picked up from their house on 200 Feet Radial Road in Kovilambakkam. Police said Janardhanan, after studying up to Class 5, worked as an assistant in a railway canteen in Royapuram. He was later appointed as a railway staff in 1981. After he befriended some of the railway association members, he learned the strategy of collecting money to get postings in railways. During questioning Janardhanan told police that he had cheated many people. Whenever people came to know of his act, he vacated his house and moved his family to another place. "He collected 3 lakh to 5 lakh each from at least 25 people, promising them the job of a travel ticket examiner," a police officer said. The Central Crime Branch police attached to the city police registered a case and r arrested Janardhanan and his two sons. They were remanded them in judicial custody after being produced before a magistrate court in the city.

NEW DELHI: Shaken by a spate of rail mishaps in the past few days, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu has decided to approach the finance ministry for Rs 1 lakh crore as Special Railway Safety Fund (SRSF) and launch a Zero Accident Mission. This is an admission by the cash-strapped organisation that it is unable to raise funds from internal resources and needs help from the government to undertake basic safety-related works. Chairman Railway Board AK Mittal confirmed that the proposal for finance ministry was being finalised.
If the Railways is granted the amount, this would be the second time for the organisation to get special funds from the Centre to improve safety. In 2001, then Railway Minister Nitish Kumar had gotRs 17,000 crore as non-lapsable SRSF.
The SRSF was supposed to be valid for five years but the period was extended to seven years. Then SRSF was mainly used to renew signalling system, track renewals and for rehabilitation of bridges. Incidentally, the Railways at that time had given an assurance to Parliament that this was a one-time fund.
Prabhu, at a meeting with all Railway Board members and 17 general managers (GMs) on Tuesday, said they would be held accountable for any mishap and no excuses for lapses would be tolerated. He had summoned all the zonal heads to discuss safety issues. One of the GMs, who attended the meeting, told ET that the minister was extremely agitated.
“I am answerable to Parliament, to the public, to the media and to the Prime Minister, if an accident takes place. It is time that you people became answerable and accountable,” Prabhu is believed to have told the railway officials. The minister pointed out that he had delegated powers and decentralised decision-making at the level of GMs and divisional railway managers (DRMs). “But with this empowerment should come greater responsibility,” he told them. While analysing the causes of the recent accidents, the minister and the officers reached the conclusion that unless money was put into improving the basic infrastructure, safety would continue to be a casualty.
Giving a broad break-up, Mittal said that Rs 40,000 crore was needed to remove unmanned crossings by building road under bridges and road over bridges,Rs 40,000 crore for track renewal and Rs 5,000 crore for strengthening bridges.
